Quiet Town

Description
This song is loosely based on a true story that my wife told me a long time ago about a small country town she taught in, which had a rumored child abuser in it who suddenly disappeared. Well that is my recollection of the story anyway, and I didn’t want to ruin the story by double-checking the facts after all this time. (Never let the facts get in the way of a good story as they say in the media).
In my head, the song combines 3 different time signatures, but when I tried to record it, it all got too damn hard, so I had to compromise and record the whole lot in 6/8 time.

Lyrics
No one likes that creepy old man
I haven’t seen Mr. Johnson around.
Some things are best left unspoken
There’s a lot of secrets in this town.

Small talk flows quite easily
We’ll gladly talk about the weather
Football scores, the fishing spots,
Some things we don’t mention ever.

(Chorus)
This is a quiet town, we like it that way,
We don’t talk to strangers, we’ve got nothing to say
We stay in our houses, and we lock all the doors
You can’t trust anyone, anymore.

Mr. Johnson always had time for a chat
I’d see him walking his dog in the park
He’d always offer a lift home from school
Now, no one goes out after dark

My parents always had their suspicions
He was always there at the beach
Hindsight is a funny thing
The children liked him, he gave them treats

You’re not on your own
Don’t face it alone
Reach out and ask for help
Talk to your family
Talk to the police
Be brave and tell someone else

Counting the cost
Of innocence lost
Terrifying young minds
There’s no excuse
For child abuse
No punishment fits this crime

(Chorus)
This is a quiet town, we like it that way,
We don’t talk to strangers, we’ve got nothing to say
We stay in our houses, and we lock all the doors
You can’t trust anyone, anymore.

Those things happened so long ago
The nights seem darker than they used to be
The kids in this town all play inside now
The only thing at the beach is the sea

Some people say he took his own life
When the police came to visit that day.
Some say he went to the city jail
He’s gone, either way

(Chorus)
This is a quiet town, we like it that way,
We don’t talk to strangers, we’ve got nothing to say
We stay in our houses, and we lock all the doors
You can’t trust anyone, anymore.

Quiet Town
I really like the contrast between the whimsical arrangement and the dark lyrical theme. Your uncomplicated, down to earth story telling works really well for this style of song. Kudos for the instrumental work and the warm mix, as well. Good one. Thanks, Dean.

Thanks for the encouragement Peter. I tried to get the music to sound a bit like a nursery rhyme.

Don't
ask me why, but when I heard the first few bars, I felt it was like eating a soft piece of caramel. Yes, I have a strange mind. But please understand that in a weird way, that was a compliment.

I am glad you enjoyed it. I must admit that mixing is the only part of the whole process that I don't struggle with.

Deceptively gentle and relaxed
yet hiding a dark story.... (perhaps)

The music has an African feel about it.

Cheers

Dick

African feel
Yeah, I can see why you said that Dick. Sort of a Paul Simon Graceland type feel I hope.

Ballad at the mission
All those time things get in the way too often. The quiet town eventually wins out. I enjoyed your arrangement on this material. The vocal might be eq a bit more brightly?

EQ
Yeah, I know what you mean about the EQ. I have terrible problems with sibilance due to the way I talk/sing. I do root around with de-essers and sometimes I have to pull back some of the high EQ to make it more palatable. I'll keep experimenting.

Cool tuneage...
We need more tunes like this.

We need more small towns where child abusers disappear.

Be well friend!

New genre?
I'm half tempted to find out how much of the story was actually true, but it would take away the mystery for me. A bit like finding out how a magician does their tricks. Thanks for listening.

6/8 time
You know, when I first started this song, it took me a while before I realised that the verses were in 6/8 time. Then when I thought up the chorus, that was in 4/4 time. Then later on, I decided that it needed a bridge, but that just naturally came out in 3/4 time. I didn't set out to do any of this.

Dark
Wow Dean this is good. The lyrics tell a great story and the music contrasts warmly. The semi spoken delivery also works well."We don’t talk to strangers, we’ve got nothing to say".....that lyric stood out to me. Good work. Cheers Mark

Thanks Mark. I wrote it from a child's perspective and ideally I would have got a child to sing it for me.

love
that time signature and guitar tones. Great story. I think you could try less processing on your vocal. I think a small room reverb with midrange EQ reduction. This time signature will be stuck in my head all day. Nice Thanks

That time again
Thanks for the feedback. I will definitely try the EQ trick and see how it goes. Quite a few of my songs are in 6/8 time. It just seems natural to me.
