Description
Posted this last week for about three days then took it down. I've since done a thorough re-mix, fixed some bass parts in the mid-section, and corrected some vocals. I think I can let this one go now... Sigh!

Here follow the original liner notes:

Been playing this chord progression for nearly twenty years, but never could figure out quite what to do with it. So I decided to just start recording and see what might unfold.

Once I got the guitar and drum tracks recorded I sat back and gave it a listen. This is S.O.P. for me, as I seldom know what a song is going to be about until I'm nearly halfway through the recording process. I try to pay attention to any feelings and/or ideas the tune itself may evoke, and let the concept or theme arise from that. Then I write the lyrics (which usually follow quote rapidly.)

My wife is out of town for a couple of weeks due to the sudden passing of her older brother, and I'm really missing her. Turns out this tune helped me give vent to the feeling of her absence, and to express my gratitude for this fragile but beautiful life we share together.

Hope you enjoy this one...

Lyrics
JUST A MAN (AFTER ALL)

I.
Some days I hold together.
Some days I fall apart.
Some days I bait my hook,
and cast my line out.

I never want to hurt you;
neglect or cause you pain.
I want to bring you sunshine,
and never rain...

CHORUS:
Can't fly or walk on water;
but I'll answer when you call.
When all is said and done
I'm just a man...after all.

II.
Life is fired at us point blank.
Can't see what's 'round the bend.
We live moment by moment,
in this present tense...

I'll wrap my love around you.
I'll catch you if you fall.
I'll give my best and try hard,
not to drop the ball.

BRIDGE:
No living legend.
No tales tall.
I'm just a man...after all.

CHORUS:
Can't fly or walk on water,
---I'll answer when you call.
When all is said and done
I'm just a man...after all.

III.
You gave your promise to me.
I gave my heart to you.
We must walk hand in hand and
see this thing through...

Our love it can sustain us.
It's all we really own.
---Still standing when the smoke clears,
and the bird has flown...

OUTRO:
Can't fly or walk on water...

I'll answer when you call!

Thank you John...
Glad you dug the tune. RE my brother-in-law: the line we're all standing in keeps getting shorter...

Sounding good
but then again I thought the other one did as well :-)

Still love the walking bass and sixties guitar.

Great lyrics.

Cheers

Thanks for checking out
this remix Dick. RE the first one: their were a couple of bad bass lines in the mid-section. Also the bass as a whole didn't sit in the mix properly. Then their were a couple places in the vocals where I went quite sharp. Hence the remix. If the first mix was good, this one is better IMHO.

Thanks again Mr. Langford!

I think
this version had more depth than the previous. More roominess, spaciousness without drowning reverb.

Hi Sam!
I agree with your description. The former mix just wasn't quite on spot.

I appreciate your stopping by to listen to the remix.

Blue Sky
We've had a pretty fair amount of smoke down here in Salem, but nothing quite like what you folks been experiencing. You need a good rainstorm!

Anyway, thanks for the kind words re the tune bro!

Be well!

Surfing with Mike!
Dick Dale aint afraid of no progression, and a shuffle is a great place to feature the bass player. Well done production here, as per usual, thank you for sharing your tunes with us here...

Hi Daug...
I appreciate the kind words. Bass was the most difficult part of this one! As for the Dick Dale connection... must be lurking somewhere in my subconscious...

What they said...and...
... the guitar Bridge is very nicely done.... lyrics were easy to understand, always a big plus in my book... volume seemed a little low overall, but I just cranked it up. (Now don't let 20 more years go by before you record your next chord progressions!)

Thanks Paul...
Ha ha... I actually have two songs I've yet to record that were written in 1970 and 1972 respectively; but they're nowhere near as good as this piece... At least guitar-wise.

Glad you enjoyed this one!

Excellent
Ah this is really good on many levels, very much enjoyed listening. The experience of being left on your own for a few days by the missus reminded me of this lighthearted take on the same theme....thought it might amuse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbW-ajkURk0 cheers mark
