Description
In 2006 I wrote and recorded a spectacularly shitty demo of this tune. I was just starting out then in Garage Band---didn't even know about Logic yet---and had no idea what I was doing! I've always wanted to revisit this one, as its theme is one very close to my heart.

When I initially wrote this I was grieving for the loss of an old friend who had passed about a decade or so before. We'd met in High School and had many adventures together on the streets in the USA and Mexico. His name was Tim Ring. He was a good man who cared deeply for others, and worked too damn hard. He lost his life in an automobile accident while driving home exhausted after a full day of serving others.

Over the years I've lost so many friends and loved ones. Many of you have also experienced this kind of loss. If you haven't yet, you surely will sooner or later.

I dedicate this tune not only to the memory of Tim Ring; but also to the following:

Thomas Hadley Wark (my father), Jeanette Rose Solomon (my mother), Jack Shay (my father-in-law), Robert Solomon (my step-father), Glen Audibert, Mike Ludlow, Donald Foster, Douglas Breazeale, Terri Gould, Manny Silva, Byrd Brownell, Lois Wallace, Maury Solomon, and Bob Shay (my brother-in-law).

The line each one of us is standing in keeps getting shorter. However, I for one am confident that I've stood in countless such lines, and will stand in countless more.

Be well all!

Lyrics
GOOD MAN DOWN

I.
I remember when I first met you.
It was in Study Hall, when we were only teens.
You criticized my clothing, and I thought:
“Who does this fool think he is?!?”

Little did I know right then that soon
we'd become so very tight;
laughing and chasing away our fears, on
starry desert party nights.
Yeah...

II.
You were the first to hear the call,
and to do a complete about-face.
I followed soon after.
We were caught up in
Divine frenzy's sweet embrace.

We did Mexico together.
Just like two rabbits on the run.
Playing at matters far beyond our ken,
under the hot southwestern sun.

CHORUS:
But time and chance and distance,
ate away at our brotherly bond.
You went your way and I went mine,
and the years, they kept rolling on.
Every now and then I'd get news of you,
through a mutual friend.
I always believed you'd still be there waiting,
just around the bend.

III.
Recently I thought about you,
and how we'd once been such close friends.
It made me want to reconnect, and rekindle,
what once upon a time had been.

But you fell asleep at the wheel,
and on that dark and fatal night;
you left us all here in the land of the dying,
---stepped into eternal Light.

CHORUS:
Time and chance and distance,
ate away at our brotherly bond.
We were laid waste by distraction and responsibility,
till our opportunity was gone.
But now and then I still think of you;
my brother, my dear friend.
And I believe I will see you someday,
just around the bend.

Just around the bend.

Enjoyed!
Lots of feeling in your tune. "The line each one of us is standing in keeps getting shorter," is a sentiment I share. I enjoy, particularly, several of your instrumental treatments beginning around 3:30 and going in varied, imaginative and pleasing directions.

Ha ha...
Well Daug, I always wanted to be in a band but it just never materialized. Only group I've ever been in was a MJ group called the Goodwillys with Dadai, Vic Holman, and an assortment of talented guests. MJ helped me to fulfill my dream of making music, and that is something I will always be grateful for.

Dig that guitar/guitars in there, as the drums and your vox as well.
Very well done my friend.

A fine tribute to all the friends and relatives that you've lost. I can relate to it
I lost quite a few close friends and relatives myself and music often helped me to cope with this loss. Music can give you so much consolation.
Enjoyed this song

Yeah KC...
music really can "soothe [we] savage beasts." Nothing else aids me in the grieving process more.

Thanks so much for dropping in for a listen and a kind word.

Personal Songs
I read somewhere that a writer should write about what he knows which I agree with. This is a perfect example of how it works. No one else knows the roads you have gone down or the way the people along the way affected you. Musically I would have liked your voice to be a little more up front but that's my personal taste.

Hi Tom
I too feel that the best tunes are those written from experience. As for my vox: I tried numerous settings, but they all sounded like they were pasted over the mix. This was the only mix that seemed to work.

Elegiac and intense
I like how you used strings on the intro to the solo. Nice wah!

A fine song Michael. I find it difficult to write personal songs like this so kudos to you.

Powerful stuff my friend with important insights and messages.

Cheers

Dick
