And So We Pray (w/Jiguma, Cori Ander & Mackie)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
It has been a long time since I’ve posted anything here, but here goes…

This is either a song about prayer or a song about people.

I wrote this song in a flurry of songwriting in late 2013, and recorded it along with a few others as part of The Kitchen Table Sessions, writing and recording them all on an iPad with an Apogee MiC to see if I could still get some songwriting done, and how fast…

This past summer I decided to try to get better recordings of the whole lot of ‘em and, by now, a few others, and it seemed a good time to lead with this one…

I am ably and very supportively assisted by old MacJams friends:

Neil Porter (Jiguma) did the bass, a lot of listening and advising, and the final, final mix.

Johannes (Cori Ander) did the intro and lead breaks on acoustic guitar.

Felix (Mackie) his son, who is somehow now grown up, and married, recorded his dad’s guitar in Sweden and sent back a really awesome mix for Neil and me to work with.

Anne (SISTERS) did a lot of listening and coaching.

I did the writing, the singing and the other acoustic guitars…

Thank you all for helping me get this across the finish line… I am beyond grateful…

Lyrics
And So We Pray

© 2013 Ed Hannifin

Am

we are blind because we choose it
C
and we kick against the goad
Am
we say we seek redemption
C
but we are helpless on that road
F Am
we cannot spare our children
C G
we cannot find our way
F C
and we cannot seem to mend ourselves
Em
and so we pray

Am
we are caught up in a whirlwind
C
we are blowing on the coals
Am
we are strewn like leaves in autumn
C
we are cast up on the shoals
F Am
we’ve so many ways sing about
C G
[just] how we’ve lost our way
F C
and we can’t find our way to better things
Em
and so we pray

Am
we carry all the weight of sorrow
C
and of pain we cannot ease
Am
though we try for exultation
C
we are dying by degrees
F Am
despite our best intentions
C G
and despite the things we say
F C
we allow ourselves to hate ourselves
Em
and so we pray

well finally
probably one of the most awaited songs on MJ.

this is a stellar piece. but then the company you keep on this song speaks for itself.

a lot of great acoustic magic going on here.

Thanks, Vic...
I'm glad you liked the 'acoustic magic'. I think Johannes did an awesome job playing in and around the track that was there, and Felix and Neil did a great job blending his tracks into mine.

And yes, there's something to be said for the 'company': working with these folks has been fun and rewarding...
Thanks for listening and commenting. I do appreciate it.

Acoustic Magic...
...as Vic so aptly points out. This just SOUNDS good in every single way: The balance of guitars and bass is perfect; the extra licks from the lead guitar are quiet and sure and just plain "fine"; and your vocal, Ed, is a treat many of us have waited way too long to hear again. Kudos to you and your collaborators for creating a beautiful song that sits so pleasantly on the ears. What class! More...More...More.

Thank you, Paul...
I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment.

I think Mackie, Johannes and Neil did a terrific job on the mix/balance. I'm pleased that you like the vocal; that tends to be the part that I worry over the most. Hopefully it won't be so long until the next one...

Bodacious!
It's been a while, but came back for this one, and glad I did. Great work by the whole band, worldwide.

The album cover - you made it so.

It does sort of boggle the mind to be able to collaborate with people in Australia and Sweden that I've never actually met...although I nag all of them to come visit...

I thought the old gazebo shot fit the mood of the song...

Top shelf in every regard
Your voice sounds great - and the excellent playing all around is done justice by a detailed, balanced mix. Oh yeah - and the lyrics are a perfect blend of imagery and emotion. I can't wait to hear more of this project.

Thank you, Kevin!
I appreciate the reassurance on the vocal especially. Neil and Johannes produced tracks that really suited the guitars and the flow of the song, I think.

I'm glad you liked the lyrics. I feel like they turned out well. I don't feel like I left in an clunker lines. Hopefully I'll be able to keep stuff coming through the pipeline for a bit. With my current work schedule it's hard to get enough free and quiet time for a decent session, but I'm going to try...

Impressive
Woo! That's impressive on a number of levels. It's a nice, tight bit of songwriting; lush, but with nothing extraneous. The mix is full, clear, and rich. All the parts, literally gathered from across the world, sit together as though they were recorded in the same room. Very nice!

Are you sure it's ready Ed? :)
Talk about a long turnaround! When this little gem came back to me when I returned from Canada I'd forgotten about it (almost) completely. Ed assured me that I'd played bass on it many centuries ago, and I wasn't going to argue with him - he drinks mead!
I was pleasantly surprised when I heard that Johannes was on board - mixing it was pretty straight forward (Felix had already done a lot of work on it), and mainly involved getting the panning sorted out and giving the whole thing some sheen and depth.
Great result on a very, very good song Ed! The guitars sounded so good, and I was most impressed by your vocal.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

This 'sureness' of which you speak...
As you are aware, I am NEVER sure that ANYTHING is ready...

I'm impressed you were able to keep, or regain, the 'thread' of this between your forays into the bear-haunted wilds of the Canadian Northwest...

I do appreciate the work you put into this, and the patience you bring to everything we've done together. I value your taste, so the encouragement about the song and the vocal are particularly welcome...

On to the next one!

A Lamentation For Our Times...
... maybe for ALL times — there always seems to be something, doesn't there?

This performance comes off as as a very intimate and personal lamentation, worthy of a front row seat at The Hungry i in San Francisco, circa 1959. The lush acoustic guitars are a perfect complement to the somber vocal. Nicely done, Ed et al. ;)

Worth the Wait
These days when I run into dead ends like these, instead of praying, I find myself shrugging : )

One can say you take way too long between posts, but you can't argue with the results: you are in fine voice and the mix is a sonic gem. It is worth the wait.

Another thing - this is an exemplary example of why MacJams remains a vital forum for music making. You have pulled together fine musicians from around the world because of socializing on this site (both by participating and conferring on the collaboration). That's special. If this represents globalization - give me more of it!

Thanks, Warren...
I have absolutely had my 'shrug' moments...I think, temperamentally, I may need some remedial 'shrug it off' lessons...

I'm glad you like the vocals and mix, two things I tend to obsess over...

I agree about the best side of Macjams...I was just remarking to my wife on Sunday night that I took guitar tracks and a mix from Sweden and sent if to Australia for final polish...I've never MET these guys, but I feel like they're among my better friends...Over the years there has been a lot of that...

Ed,
So good to hear this new tune after so long. The comments above say it all. I'll just add that this collaboration hearkens back to early MJ days and also, hopefully, points forward to more of the same. Great performances as well as poingnant lyrics...

"Classic Ed"... (*Simon, we need a new song genre added*)

Kudos to you, Neil, Curry, and Mackie.

Worth the wait
The acoustics accompanied by the bass sounds great, it seems like you guys did this in the same room. I think what stands out to me the most is your vocals. They sound much stronger and assertive, not too hot but just enough. I like this tune because it's short and to the point. Definitely worth the wait and hopefully the next won't take that long.

Kudos to all involved. The choices of talent here at macjams make it easy for one to find help and get their ideas across effectively.

From the Big Virtual Room to your ears...

I'm glad, as noted above, that the vocals seem to be working for you and for other listeners. It IS a pretty short song, and I was wondering if it needed a bridge or something, but it ended up sounding pretty complete the way it came out. I'm pleased you like it that way.

There is absolutely a wealth of help and talent around this place, even in these relatively depleted times...

Fantastic
I have been waiting for several yours for new stuff from you. I have checked your profile from time to time, but no new songs. So, it was a delight to finally hear some new stuff.

I have listened to the song in three different environments. On headphones and on my studiomonitors it sounds like a very well balanced mix. In my car however the bass was very present, and the vocals were a bit in the back. Strange thing! It might have something to do with the mastering, I presume..

The song itself is fantastic. Your vocals are still great and the guitars sound very good.

Lyrics and melody is excactly the way I like it to be. I interpret the song to be about the conflict between rationality and emotions, which is something i have been very interested in lately.

This was a great comeback, and I am definately looking forward to more songs from you now!

Hi Magnus
It really is a great song isn't it. Welcome back to MJ!
As the person responsible for the final mix I'm interested to understand how the sound in your car was so different to the other sources you used. The bass is mixed dead centre and Ed's vocal is mixed slightly to the left, but not so much that I imagine it would be degraded in a mono (or closely placed speakers, as in a car) situation. The guitars were panned pretty widely (for me) though, as I'd brought them in from a previous mix where they were panned as far left and right as possible. I can understand the guitar volumes dropping off in the car - maybe the change in speaker locations between the listening situations you mentioned just through the whole mix out of balance. It's certainly a noteworthy comment you have made for future mixes.
Thanks for the comment - very helpful.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Hi Magnus!
I'm glad to hear you were even looking...

I'm glad you like the song, and particularly glad that you like the vocals, guitars, lyrics and melody. If the lyric has got you reflecting, I'm pleased...

I hope to have a few more coming that won't take years, although they may take a variety of forms...

As to the mix, I can only say that I have often experienced a completely different sound in the car, whatever the car I'm in... I'm leaning into Neil and Felix's ears at this point, but for myself I've never yet achieved the perfectly transportable mix...And I'll keep trying....

Sweet
A treat! Saw your post on Facebook about this posting, and to my delight (and relief....), found MacJams up and alive when I came to log in. And am I glad it was. What a sweet song.

Lovely opening, and a really sweet acoustic sound throughout. The sound of the guitars is warm and enveloping, filling the speakers. And your vocal is great. Which mic are you using for the vocal? Lovely lyrics, too, and a quietly potent and topical message. The production sounds crisp and clear, but still keeping the wonderful warmth that suffuses the song. Also worth noting that any song that has the word "exultation" is alright wth me. The ending was unexpected in the best way. I'm a fan of the short but sweet song, and this hit the target.

Very cool. Nicely done, my friend. Hopefully, you're planning on more. Kudos to everybody involved. Peace.

David!
Another who is missed around here!

I'm naturally pleased that you like the song, the guitars and the vocal. I'm pretty sure the vocal was the Neumann TLM 102, which, cross fingers, is working out to be a mic that I can 'learn' and work with for both vocals and guitars. It's very adaptable if you mess with placement, and smooth almost no matter what you do with it...

I'm pleased that you like the lyric. I'm a fan of 'exultation', too.

As noted above, I hope to trot a few more out as I roll through the New England fall and winter....

Thanks for listening, and commenting...
