Description
A song about working at 7-11 in high school, late shift, and all these strung out people would come in and you'd realize that they were your neighbors in the small town, people who never came out during the day. I tried to incorporate that convenience store feeling, linoleum and hard light, stale smoke, the cold of the freezer - all that into the tune. I like the solo a lot, it's my Gretsch Jim Dandy mic'd and then run through pedals and then mic'd from the amp. Gives it a spooky sound.

Lyrics
Thirty somethings
who should know better
paranoid
got the shakes
ordering Marlboro Red soft packs
gasoline
Little Debbie cakes
staring out the window while I make their change
like the cops have got a BOLO out
for the insecure and pained

that's who you don't want to end up being
that's why you leave chirping the tires
radio drowning out the possibility
that you'll be back at 33
oh but you feel good, you're 17!
but around here everybody's born with old man feelings.

it's that time again
your girl is thumbing through a tiger beat
waiting for your shift to end
you're slicing ham for some strung out mom
whose kids are bouncing in the car
staring at your girlfriend's Gitanos
and trying to remember who you are
you're just a kid
with all that kid shit coursing through your veins
and that's the high
that all these people are trying to find again

its a mess of contadictions
all keyed up and bored
late night shift alone
in the fluorescent light
of the convenient store

Been awhile...
nice to hear a new contribution from you bro. :-)

Dig the gradual build-up as you tell the sordid tale.

Exquisite lead guitar!

Nice, NICE work!

Be well friend!

Thanks!
Appreciate the listen and I'm glad you liked the lead. Always difficult to pair the feel of the lead to the feel of the song so glad you liked it!

Easy In and Out Store
The reverb on the vocal is just right. The production shines in the soft glow of the ballast lighting, I can hear the buzz. Just need some customers to come in and buy some smokes and snacks, maybe a couple of party girls asking for directions to a road which will take them to the riverside party. Maybe some motorcycles...

In and Out
It took forever to get the vocal sound that I wanted. I kept thinking John Lennon. So really glad you liked it, and glad the store came through in the song. Thanks!

Small Town Blues
Ah, to be 17 and know better. Sometimes I miss those days. Sigh.

You've encapsulated the moment - those Small Town blues. No rose-colored lenses here, just stark existence revealed by the electro-illumination of fluorescent tubes. I almost can hear those lights hum in the background.

Of course, that's both the strength and the weakness of living in a small town. You end up knowing everybody and everybody ends up knowing you. And then it hits you - at 17 - that most folks aren't all that worth knowing that well. Your singing, your playing, your production has captured that actuality perspicaciously.

Small Town Blues
I used to swear to my parents that I'd leave that place and live the rest of my life in a huge city where everything shined with possibility. And then after living in a city I realized I really wanted to settle down in a small town. Thanks for the listen!

grimey
there is something just odd working a late shift. a different world in itself.

great lyrics and a desolute feel in the music. works perfectly together. the effected guitar solo reinforces the feel of this composition. great work Craig!

late shift
I worked late shift in the store and then later as a janitor. It's weird being the only person up and around in a huge building. Really glad the feel came across and glad you liked it!

Convenience Store
Looking back without rose-coloured glasses isn't often the norm. Works so well here. Finely observed lyrics and just the right amount of regret and emptiness in the arrangement vibe. Solo is a gem. Thanks, Craig.

Roses
I try to keep my glasses glasses colored and my coffee coffee flavored. Glad the little bit of regret came across, that's excellent. Also glad you liked the solo! Thanks for the listen!

Have you heard the tribute album to Nebraska?
This has a feel very much like the killer is my highway patrolman. I really like this. I grew up in a small town and might have been one of these characters for a brief time. The guitars are very interesting. My ears hear a lot of midrange that I would EQ out but I also have a bit of hearing loss.

The story is really well written. You have the gift for sure. Nice, nice work

tribute
I haven't heard it but man now I'm going out to find it. Nebraska is one of my all time favorite records. The fact that this reminds you of that in any way is super cool, so thanks! May be some mid range stuff bouncing around - i was using an acoustic with no pickups to do the distorted stuff which makes the sound bounce everywhere - which is what I was going for - but I may have overdone it. Thanks for the listen!

Jim Dandy
Cool solo indeed.

I feel like with all the echoing in the solo, and then the rhythm track kinda dropping out, you sort of lose the flow. I wonder how it would feel if you keep the drum beat under the solo.

And great lyrics, btw. I've never had that sort of job, but your imagery is very vivid.

Nice one, Craig
Love the minimalism of the track under your vocals, let's their character stand out even more. Looking for the heart of another Saturday night. And yes, that lead sounds great.

minimalism
I've been on a minimalist kick lately, I keep coming back to it. I like the heart of saturday night idea, it's never where or what you think it's going to be. I thought of you when I was hooking up the pedals and mics for the solo, it looked like the kind of mousetrap that you'd build.
