Smoke and Dew /awigze

Description
I noticed that Andy (awigze) posted a version of this tune recently. I had regretted this project because it never really got finished. Andy had generously sent me some sax trax years ago, then my computer died, and I lost all the Logic files, right in the midstream of rearranging and adding guitar noise. I had managed to make a work-in-progress mp3, which I’m uploading here, although I had pretty much abandoned this project.

This actually resulted from listening to Jeff Berlin, the monster bass player, who some of you might know of. So I made up a midi bass track that would be very difficult to play, and added drums and a bunch of synths.

So, to add to Andy’s post, here’s what I have, with some sprinkled Andy sax and Les guitar. Thanks, Andy.

I always get
such a refreshing feeling listening to your stuff, can't explain why, but I suppose it might just be all that ear candy and toe tapping drive of it all. Also, a bit of Andy Sax is never wrong :-)

Thanks and take care,
Henke (heading over to youtube...)

Thanks, Henrik
Good to hear. Lots of overlapping noise that was in the process of being cleaned up. Anyway, it felt good to post something here after all this time.

Smoke and Dew
It's an interesting piece of music. The bass is impressive, the changes in direction and use of different instruments is entertaining. I like it.

Hi, Philip
The bass would have been impressive if a human had actually played it. Well, fun with Logic.

Well, Andy lives in Texas, and I can't speak for him. As for me ... well ... I say the left coast progletariat must rise up!

Lots to listen to
One that sounds great on the headphones. All the hooks changes and instrumentation. very much enjoyed. Glad you salvaged something from the computer death! Cheers Mark

Hi, Mark
That computer death came at the worst possible time, naturally. At least three collabs got interdicted. Anyway, I'm glad you liked it in headphones, which is probably the result of mixing with headphones, which they say is a bad practice. I do it anyway.

Man how
I've missed this. I saw it earlier, and didn't have a chance for a proper listen (wanted to wait until I could hear it on my monitors). Now I'm glad I did, that bass section half-way thru alone was worth the wait. Andy added just the right touches to up the class.
The video was simple/complex awesomeness. Think I'm gonna watch again after downloading this.

I always like to get your reaction. Glad you like it, although it's not my usual kinda thing. I had this laying around in an earlier, simpler form for years, and I couldn't help but notice that Andy could probably help out. Then it started getting complicated, and I didn't get to finish it off. Still, it's fun to post here. Getting that nostalgia thing. I've been tweaking They Don't Lie (instrumental version), thinking about a repost. Man, I regret losing all your tracks for that.

The prog practitioners are still out there, leaving me in the dust, but not too many here it seems. Well, if people will listen to my flailing away, I'll keep posting. Always good fun.

OH wow.... the saga continues. This is where this was going! I looked for contact info on you before I posted mine but couldn't find your whereabouts. I was hoping this would pull you up somewhere. Sammy tipped me off on iComp that you posted this on MJ. I am diggin especially the last 90 seconds of this tune. I think it would be great to collaborate on something that won't crash along the way.

The saga hahaha
Yes indeed. Computer crashes tend to interrupt the flow. I was being careless by not backing up --- Macs never crash (aggghhh). I also think a new collaboration would be a worthwhile goal. Thanks again for your contributions, Andy.

i like both versions. quite the adventurous piece. some nice complexity and melodic at the same time. kind of a cross between Yes & early Utopia. great to hear a new one from ya.

Yestopia. Well, dunno about that. I think those guys took lessons. I will keep trudging along, though.

Hi, Karen
Mountain Dew is indeed a real treat. Especially Code Red. My favorite sugarbubblewater (except for Dad's Root Beer, which I think I'll make the inspiration for my next outing), although my doctor only allows me to indulge once a month.

Great track
lots of left turns without resulting in running in circles - that takes talent. Your synth work is excellent - and Andy is in fine form as always. Especially cool guitar lines and sounds.

Thanks for the feedback. Talent, not so much. Lots of trial and error, however. Lots.

Damn there are just some spots in this that just tear it up, those keys and that crazy Bass plus Andy spots it just right perfect combo ,man it really grooves Love it towards the end those stops and starts with everyone getting some solo in there The sax at the end amazing an exceptional work!

Both your and Andy's interpretation of this song were a real treat to hear! Thanks for posting this. Can't go wrong with Mountain Dew for the sugary enjoyment. Fun fact: Mountain Dew's pH is 3!

Dueling Dews. I wish I could have finished it, but that would mean starting over, and I ain't gonna do that. pH 3. Mmmm. Citric acid. Coke is bad enough, and I'll be sticking with that for the time being.

Looking forward to a new carboniferous tune.

Progmatic
Trial and error (which is my default mode of composition) will get you somewhere. I like all of the places this piece goes to. It has a majestic stature in its restless flow, yet all of the individual components are distinct.

Hi, Warren
Trial and error is also a good way to practice. Speaking of which, I need to get back in practice. Maybe something new will come of it. Thanks for your kind comments on our little ditty.

I've missed your music, Les. Even though this is apparently a stop - gap track, it's terrific. The sax goes very well with your bits. (My favourite Jeff Berlin is the stuff he did with Bill Bruford.)
