A traditional (Maritimes) Canadian folk song done pretty much straight up. If anyone has a bodhran or pennywhistle to add, let me know. (Dadai?)

Lyrics
Farewell to Nova Scotia
trad., arr: snowdragon

Chorus
So farewell to Nova Scotia, the sea-bound coast
Let your mountains dark and dreary be
For when I am far away on the briny ocean tossed
Will you ever heave a sigh or a wish for me?

The sun was setting in the west
The birds were singing on every tree
All nature seemed inclined to rest
But still there was no rest for me.

I grieve to leave my native land
I grieve to leave my comrades all
And my aged parents whom I always held so dear
And the bonnie, bonnie lassie that I do adore.

The drums do beat and the wars do alarm
My captain calls, I must obey
So farewell, farewell to Nova Scotia's charms
For it's early in the morning and I'm far, far away.

I have three brothers, they are at rest
Their arms are folded on their breast
But a poor simple sailor just like me
Must be tossed and driven on the deep dark sea.

Excellent vocal work here
Interesting application on the harmonies, is it some kind of filter? It really
works, and gives the harmonies an unusual, distinctive sound. Very
enjoyable.

Excellent vocal work here
Attie — thanks muchly. And the simple answer is yes there are filters, lots of
them. I rarely know what sound I'm after until I hear it, ie, I muck around a
lot. But I went back and added them up and there are 8 vocal tracks on this,
with varying volumes and panned all over the place. Of the filters, there is
one each of No Effects, Pop Vocals, Ambient Vocals. Two Male Basic
(including the lede vocal verse) and three tracks with a home-grown filter I
call Choruses. Choruses is: Compressor about 5, EQ-Vocal Presence, Chorus-
Stage Chorus, Chorus-Spread Stereo and Reverb about 35. The Master Track
is simply set at default. Thanks again

Set that sail!
This is very nice, reminds me of the Grateful Dead' s more
folky stuff. Nice intimate feel to the production and good
clear acoustic sound on the guitar

Set that sail!
Thanks Steve. When playing (acoustic) live, I usually finish with Friend of the
Devil so your comment felt especially good.

Best of folk
Such a solid perfect essential rendition. This could be in a
best of folk compilation on any label. Great stuff. Altho
there are moments the vocals seem to saturate, as if they
are slightly too hot into the board, but the rough and
perfect feel of the performance makes it all seem natural
and just right. Great balance of harmonies. Such a
delight.

Tis a fine rendition...
in the best of folk tradition. This is very well done... the layered vocals, understated just right instrumentation... all is good. The song is complete... take a bow and sip a pint.

Tis a fine rendition...
Thanks Dadai. And although it might be complete, I'll bet I could find a spot
for a pennywhistle should the spirit ever move you.
cheers

Too Many Good Songs
So many good songs are posted that it is hard to keep up.
I missed this the first time around and only heard because
of the forum post on strings. Really nice work. Pro sound.

Too Many Good Songs
Bronc — ain't that the truth. I have at least 20 d/ls on my desktop right now
that I've barely had time to listen to. Two of them have the same title, BTW.
Something about Rain and Blues :) Thanks pal.

Another rousing version
The version here is very traditional, and wonderful. But a more rousing version, I find, is by "Touchstone" 1st album from Green Linnet Records. Two female singers, and many rather more complex chords and structure, but still all acoustic. Just amazing, and even more poignant.
