Recording 18 Singers?
Friday, October 17 2008 @ 10:11 AM CDT

I'm about to attempt to record a group of 18 young singers for a Christmas CD project. I have an idea of what I might expect from the size and sound of the room, but looking for suggestions from anyone who has some experience.

Can I do this in GarageBand?

Initially I was thinking I'd use 2 mics to record the whole group singing and then come back and individually record several strong singers on individual tracks in a studio environment and work on a good mix with the group track towards the back in the mix.

Then I thought, if that sounds terrible, couldn't I just record a smaller group of singers for a track that each individual singer could sing to, singing in a studio environment.

My main concern is that I don't want this to take a week just to record one song.

Please enlighten me as to how I should approach this project. My goal is to record 8-10 songs and there will be anywhere from 3 - 18 singers per song.

I'll send the finished cd to diskmakers - anyone have any experience with them? They seem to be easy to work with and you can't beat the quality of the product, or the price.... or can you?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

PS I probably could've spared the community and emailed Dick Langford.

diskmakers is tops.... I have had a lot of friends use them and everytime we crack open a fresh box of cd's from them there is this giant "WHOA!" that happens each and everytime. If you have the cash to use them then you should..... not to mention all the distro they get you set up with.....

Thanks Ian. I'd heard they were great and it's always good to hear it again from someone else.

Sell those drums yet?

I got a lot of great advice from folks that you might find helpful in this forum-

I used GarageBand to record the school concert using two condenser mics in the gymnasium. I had no control over monitor placement, so the backing music was blaring right next to one of the mics. Afterwards, I opened the tracks in Logic to try and smooth things out.

If you want to hear the live recording-

Are they going to be singing to backing music? If so, will it be live played or recorded.
