Anyone using an Ibanez GAX30?
Tuesday, October 21 2008 @ 03:28 AM CDT

I've decided to buy a new general purpose rock guitar and have almost decided on the GAX30. Funds are tight and this is regarded as a step up from a lot of the cheap copies out there. Anyone use one? Any opinions? Alternatives for similar money (£120 - £150)

I use an Ibanez... but I guess the more important apart from the guitar is the gadgets.. Maybe a guitar rig will be very handy...

I agree with Chris... the GRX series are very good for the $$$. I have a GAX70 from a few years back.
Here are some important thoughts between the two, and ultimately why I prefer one over the other... the necks are hugely different.
The GRX neck is based on the Wizard design and built for speed and is therefore more a narrow, fast, shape. At the time I purchased my GAX, i only had an acoustic and wanted to feel like i was played a real guitar, and the GRX neck was not the right fit for me...
The GAX neck, based on the AX neck is much thicker. It was an important development for ibanez, enough so, they actually had diagrams about the neck on their site.
The AX neck is more design for light solos, not blazing speed. If you're into rhythm or laid back soloing a la Pink Floyd or Candlebox, then you're good. Otherwise, consider the GRX.
I LOVE the feel of my GAX, except the body is heavy as hell!!!! Consider that too. Mine is a good bit heavier than a Les Paul.
Anyway, I hope clarifying the neck difference helps your decision.
Dollar for dollar, Ibanez is making the best stuff for sure right now, though.
Peace

Thanks for the replies guys.
Jason, your clarification on the neck issue has really helped. I'll be auditioning, and likely buying, a GAX30 on Monday. I'll keep you posted. (I'm told I have to hold on it 'til Christmas!! heh!)

i have a grx series guitar by ibanez as well. being a left handed player, it is hard to find the higher dollar axes without special order, so i bought the grx 20 L. i then upgraded the pickups to duncan jazz and jeff beck's, and i love the guitar immensley. i do not think i would change company's. the sound and feel is exactly what i want for my style, both metal and hard rock/blues.
you can hear my guitar, fun through a line 6 podx3 live on this song;
