Lyrics
RIVER RAT
I don’t know if you know that
I was raised a river rat
Along the slippery slopes of the Upper Mississippi
The river was my playground
I used to hang around
The river was my school and my university

From St Cloud to St Paul
Minneapolis to Wabasha
Winona, La Crosse and Prairie du Chien
From Dubuque to Muscatine
And those Quad Cities in between -
Davenport, Rock Island, Bettendorf and Moline

Flowing past the forests
Flowing past the mills
Flowing past the prairies
And the hills
Flowing past the factories
Flowing past the farms
Flowing onward flowing
Forever flowing past
I see water in my dreams
When my bed becomes a raft

Once I had a lover
Who loved me for my money
When the money disappeared my lover vanished, too
Nothing in life is permanent
Everything here will disappear
Even mountains melt under water’s relentless flow

I have been a rambler
Wandering through this world so wide
The best times I had was when
You were by my side
My life is like a river
Flowing onward ceaselessly
Got to keep on movin’
Until I meet into the sea
Got to keep on movin’
Until I meet into the sea
Got to keep on movin’
Movin’ ceaselessly

Shell-shocked
It sounds kind of like an early Jefferson Airplane garage
recording but the production values are so bad that I
couldn't get through it. The song sounds like it could be
happening and I'm guessing you're getting killed by the way
it was recorded.

Shell-shocked
Original versions were clean, but the direction this collaboration took off was an
attempt to emulate an outdoor concert of trash rock on a hot Midwest summer
evening, which led to jettisoning various studio production values regarding
clarity. I think at one point there may even be a freight train rumbling through
the background (but I'm not sure about that). Tim and I had a fun time putting
this together, bouncing it back and forth, and if the results head to a place you
don't want go to, well, we still appreciate you stopping by and traveling with us
for a while - as well as leaving a comment (that's really appreciated!).

You were successful in that goal. It totally comes off as a live performance.

I'm a new fan of the riverrats.

Interesting tune
I really like the song and the vocals in particular. I agree
with the previous comment that the production is a bit
jarring...at least over the course of the whole song. Maybe
it could just be limited to sections? But I really like the
track overall...kind of reminds me of early REM, Pavement,
B52's in various ways.

This is really cool
Those comments about production quality--give me a break! that is so short-sighted I can't believe a musician would even render such a statement. This tune and its recording is very creative and extremely well done.

Nice concept
There's a lot of stuff going on here. Curious as to how
many tracks you guys bounced around for this. I fall into
the camp of not having as much problem with the
production. But it's gonna probably be an either/or for
most people. I'm an either.

Took a couple listens and still liked what I heard. Very
much a garage/indie kind of thing. Ballad of a locally
famous band of which I've seen many. It seems to play
with psychadelic but has some more serious things to do
with its time. Pretty cool the more you listen.

Nice concept
Thanks for giving us a multiple-listening review, zendog. I can't tell you how
many tracks this version has, because Tim has the final mix. This is Version 8,
and I know he is still tinkering with the little things, because he recently sent me
Version 10 and asked what I thought of it. It's funny how you can change a little
here and a little there and, although it's the same song, it becomes something
different. I think this is one of those songs that will have no definitive version,
but an array of nuanced interpretations. Anyway - thanks for being one of the
"eithers."

reminds me of college
rock in the 80's. All those great independent bands. Yeah-
this has a great live feel- like a bootleg cassette tape.

Smart lyrics- vocals harken back to Wall of Voodoo- I
know you guys remember them. Great song with raunchy
guitar tones and smoking bass!

PS- the production really isn't as bad as some have said. I can hear everything
and it feels like I'm there. I've heard much worse.

Such a thick, rich sound
you guys manage to put together here. I especially liked
this piece because it reminds me of a houseboat trip I
took from St. Paul years ago down the Mississippi, passing
some of the towns (Winona, Wabasha) mentioned in the
lyrics. But it is really the 'wall of sound' that is most
memorable in this song, excellent guitars. Again, sorry I
missed this when it posted, I was on vacation. Looking
forward to more from you, individually or as riverrats.

Such a thick, rich sound
Just read some of the previous comments. I never really thought about the
production. Somehow I don't think production values are a key or even impt
ingredient in a raucous piece like this. Also, love the artwork.
