Added Spookiness Instruments are great. I love the bass and this is much closer on the vocal track, nice and clean and static-free. Now the only issue is the muffled or compressed sound. I think people would take it in the spirit intended if you ask for help in the forums. You're so close and won't need much assistance, I don't think. I have the nagging feeling that it's to do with the signal coming in, rather than production and there are lots of people who know lots about mics and interfaces around here. I have to admit, this is for selfish reasons as much as anything. I love your music and want recordings that do your singing justice. I really enjoy it. Added Spookiness Hi Lisa, thanks, I think part of the problem was me re-using cheap CDs. Please don't feel that I would ever get offended by comments or criticism - it's this sort of feedback that helps me improve. I will seek advice on mics and inputs, and see if I can sort out the vocal sound - -failing that, I'll see if I can get surgery on my vocal chords (maybe it's my nodules causing the problems)!?. Thanks again, and look forward to hearing some new tracks from you soon. Steve Check out my latest song called Light Sleeper

title Thanks for returning the comments, AS. I'm glad you liked this, though I can't claim credit for the words and the chords, of course. I love this song, and really enjoyeed singing it, and trying to create an atmosphere - I'm now looking for other old standards to tinker with (maybe some Nina Simone?). A damn fine arrangement Particularly like the intro - has a fantastic eerie edge. You've done such a fine production job on the instruments and your voice sounds great - but there's something about the way voice comes across in the mix which isn't quite there - I'm no expert on recording so I can't help. I don't think the vocal needs to be more forward in the mix (not by much anyway) but your treatment of it needs a bit of tinkering. Anyway, I've probably laboured this point - when I should just be telling you what a good track it is and that I've listened to it several times and despite the spookiness it brought a smile to my hungover face! KK PS - not sure why but I imagine you were wearing a lilac shirt with big frills when you recorded this! Check out my latest song called Urra Moor/The Leckie/Reel CJ/Willafjord

A damn fine arrangement Lilac shirt, wot, like Laurance Llewellyn whatisname! As you would imagine, my wardrobe is mainly black (but a lighter shade for summer). Thanks for the comments KK, I'm not sure what it is with the vocal, but i will be seeking professional help (as well as buying a new mic - when in doubt, shop). Glad it helped your hangover! Class act er, I like what you've done here with this old classic. The keys sound great and the production on the instruments is very nicely done. I don't know what you've done with the vox, but I like what sounds like a separate octave shifted (down) vox in parts. I think Lisa's comment about the compressed sound is referring mainly to your lead vocal, and i can hear what she's getting at. I'm definitely not an expert either, but there are certainly people here that will be able to offer advice on making the most of what sounds like a very good voice. I like this - look forward to the next version :) Neil Check out my latest song called We End Up Being All The Same (42)

Class act Hi neil, Thanks for the comments. You're spot on, I used the vocal transformer to reduce the octave of my voice and then put this under the main vocal - gave it a kinda creepy effect. Thanks also for the comment on the vocal sound/mix - hopefully someone on the site can enlighten me. Cheers Steve Check out my latest song called Light Sleeper

a classic redone Your voice and choice of intrumentation is a perfect match. I really liked the brief rhythym section interude, that backs up the "summertime" refrain. A cool little jammin bass and drum thing. Nice arrangement. Very hip and stylish Check out my latest song called Blackwater (by Tokai)

Gershwin wouldn't have cried! Always loved this song and it's great to hear your take on it. It's as timeless as ever and I don't think George Gershwin would've have cried - fact he'd probably be smiling. The only thing I would have preferred is more reverb. I liked your voice but the production felt a bit cramped. Still I really enjoyed this. Check out my latest song called ANTHIMOS

Gershwin wouldn't have cried! Thanks Bowman, appreciate the feedback. I was trying to make this sound kinda claustrophobic - maybe that's why it sounds cramped (or could be just my poor production!). After previous postings, I tried to take back the reverb on my voice, against my natural instincts - maybe up it for V.4? Ta Steve Check out my latest song called Light Sleeper

Summer's almost over :( cool version of this classic. love the eery perspective on this one. Production and performance is great. My only qual is that cowbell in the beginning. It detracts more than adds and it seems to diminish the affect of the drum groove kickin' in. The more space in the beginning the better. Nice work echoroom. enjoyed this very much. eleveneyes Firstly - where's the reply button gone? Secondly, thanks Eleven eyes. The cowbell at the start was supposed to be a bit like the one at the start of the movie The Usual Suspects, but didn't quite work out that way! Thanks for the comments Steve Check out my latest song called Light Sleeper

you know, this is one of those songs that has been played so many times, you're sure you don't want to hear it anymore. but.... you did an awesome version. i love those synth strings, and your voice is so cool on it. it's reminiscent of peter murphy/bowie ( agood thing). like the rhythm that comes in at the end right before the pretty little piano outro. as far as recording quality goes: sounds good to me (i am probably the guy least concerned with that sort of thing in all of macjams tho). i can hear everything, and it's got some nice bottom end to it. you did a really nie job with this one. Pete Murphy! Well Mike, I gotta admit I was a big Bauhaus fan in my youth, so maybe some of Pete is still rattling round my skull ( a scary thought). This was def the best recording I did in GB, and ut was nice not to have to write lyrics or chords! Ta for stopping by Steve Check out my latest song called Light Sleeper

Hey Steve I remember thinking that you can really sing on "they come w smiles" but this made me sit up and take notice... I'm betting that you have some stage experience... you really understand passion in the moment. this is something that is often lost in "the recording" process... there are "Prince moments" in your performance. not just because of he effected vocal... which I didn't mind at all... it worked in the genre... I did think it would have been cool to blast a chorus with the vocal effect off... a kind of braking out... I was so taken with your singing that I hardly paid attention to the production... so a second listen...and you are very creative.. textured and clever... any Thomas Dolby in your past? I like the elements that you employ to build... PRO excellent Check out my latest song called He Has Passed this Way

Prince??? Man, i haven't a funky bone in my body! Oddly enough, we used to cover When Doves Cry ... you can hear that on itunes (the band was Who By Fire), but dont buy it as its a bit rubbish. I've always loved this song, and wanted to try a more modern arrangement ... I really like the mood of this, and keep looking for other songs to cover in a similar manner. This was the best i got out of GB, with a lotta help from Ledebutant. Thanks for the kind words Steve Check out my latest song called Light Sleeper
