Description
Well, this was recorded in GB2 and 3 then mixed in LE. It took about 3 weeks of tinkering in Logic (which i still haven't got to grips with), and then I just stopped, so I guess this is a work in progress. I'm still struggling with the bass in the mix.

For those of you interested in these things, the vocal melody and lyrics were written first (about 2 years ago) - music was written around them.

This was written about celebrities as false idols (Colin Farrell has the 'carpe diem' tattoo) - yes, another media rant. The second verse was rewritten whilst recording - the 'vote for the 12 disciples' a reference to pop/American Idol -style TV programmes.

This is a strange style and time signature for me - I was listening a lot to Madonnas new album whilst working on this, which is why it's a bit more dance-oriented.

Lyrics
I've been abused by the nightly news
Filling my head with fearsome cartoons.
Your carpe Diem tattoo;
It's all Greek to you.
My brain like a fish in a bowl
I wish this life would show me some soul.
You stroke my remote control
I've got to want you.

If you're looking for love, go look somewhere else
'Cause when the stars come out, they only love themselves...

Idiot saviour, nothing gonna save your
Idiot saviour, yeah yeah yeah.
Idiot saviour, nothing gonna save y'all
Idiot saviour, yeah yeah yeah.

An industry just to keep me amused
Conspiracy makes the heart swoon.
Satellite channel shampoo
What's the news.
We want a prophet and we get Madonna
We want a bible, we get GQ.
We get to vote for the twelve disciples
Straight from stage school.

If you're looking for love ...

Idiot saviour ...

We want a prophet ...

Nice ..
got a bit of a "Tainted Love" bass thing crossed with hints of
Depeche Mode and INXS - not a bad thing.

Works!

Mix sounds good and I like the lyrics and vocals too.

tainted, certainly?
Yeah, there's a little bit on the percussion that's VERY Tainted Love - glad you
picked it up. Funnily, it reminded me of INXS too, but i couldn't quite work out
why.

Oh God, another 80's track, i am living in a time warp!

Hey lisa, great to hear from you - let me know whatcha think when you've had a

still flying blind in Logic, and it's slowed down my output rate massively. Still,

an industrial vibe
as well. I think the mix works great. As mentioned a real depeche
mode feel, which definitely rocks. Liked your singing. The effect you
used was choice, or maybe that was just the recording technique?

Can't think of a title
Hi KtB,
I appreciate your comments on the mix, especially having listened to your recent work with Cori. The Depeche sound wasn't intentional, but when I added the slide guitar, I must admit it reminded me of Personal Jesus. I umm-ed and ah-ed about keeping it, but it worked, so I left it.

The vocal effect was done by putting the vocal through a guitar amp, with very little reverb. I wanted a distorted sound to it, but didn't want it to sound just like it was through a megaphone (an effect I've used a lot in the past).

Thanks for the comments

Firstly, what a great handle you've got.

Secondly, I've had a quick look at your Bio page and you appear to have been operating under my radar - looking forward to checking some of your tracks out.

Thanks for the feedback - late 80's/ early 90's is very much my era, so the influences seep through. Glad you liked the bass - I changed the sound about 15 times until I finally settled on the one I began with.

The Doctor will see you now!
Hello, and greetings to the planet Xenon.
Thanks for the sweet comments - you know, I have no problem with people who become famous for their talents and abilities, but here in the UK we are force-fed a bunch of people who appear to have no discernable talent, other than the fact that they appear on TV/in magazines and/or take thier clothes off.
There has always been an interest in 'celebrities', but the whole thing has ramped up so much (especially post Big Brother) that we now have people who are well known because they are well known.
This is Warhols vision that everyone will be famous for 15 minutes gone mad, and I don't think it's very pretty.

They have nothing to say and they're saying it too loud. As McLuhan said ' Don't ask what's right or wrong, but what's going on'. So I shouldn't try and judge this (which I strugle with), but just understand it. So it's not bad that Madonna is becoming a kind of spiritual guru, but what does this say about spirituality and religion. Will she become bigger than the Pope? Or Jesus?

End of rant.

LE is a GIANT step up from GB, and I'm still not able to record in it yet (I bought a manual, but it's a toss-up between learning LE or writing new songs, and of course I prefer the latter).

However, I managed to Forrest-Gump my way through it to mix this track, so i'm starting to understand it a bit better.

Ha!
Love it. Nice acid-tinged lyrics. Such a great pot shot at the "idiot" culture
being pushed at us these days. Plus, such a great sound. I hate to use the
term "Retro" because it's a very fresh sound. I can hear the Soft Cell
"Tainted Love" sound that was mentioned, but it actually reminded me
more of Depeche Mode in both sound and content. Really a great track. It
now has a nice home in my iPod.

Acid-tinged
Hi J,

Well, i've been to an acid party, but never inhaled, so that maybe explains the
lyrics. I don't mind being retro- I'm just keeping the past alive for future
generations. By the time the next 80's revival comes around, I'd better have the
album ready.

Thanks for the feedback, and keep up the accordian playing!

Strike a Pose
You know, I've figured out that part of your sound is that your songs
often seem to strut. I have the urge to march around the room and
strike runway model poses during this one, which is just a perfect fit
with the lyrics. You're using all of the elements, music, production and
lyrics to convey the message of the song. Everthing is tremendously
integrated, each part dovetailing into the next.

Seriously, Steve, this is the treatment I've felt your music has deserved
all along. The production is far ahead of where you were with your last
song and, though I'd love for you to churn out the hits, it's worth
taking time with your music to get it up to this level of production.
This is a terrific mix, especially since it's your first go-around with
Logic. I think you should really be very pleased with yourself.

That line, 'cause when the stars come out, they only love themselves...I
can only say I wish I'd written it myself. I'm eating my heart out over
that one. It's a killer, killer line. Lordy, your writing is fantastic.
echoroom said 4465 days ago (September 28th, 2006)
YMCA?
You know, even when I do quiet songs, I struggle not to have them a bit nervy and intense, which i guess is a reflection of me 'cause I'm always stressed and highly strung. I've never considered this an attribute, but I guess it comes out in the music and gives it a certain .. something. I tried to make this track a bit more groovy ... actually, I find the (ooh ooh - ahh ahh) backing vox in chorus a bit like a chain gang chant, and actually a little bit camp - maybe Village People could cover this track?

I'm naturaly impatient, so spending 4 weeks off and on playing around in Logic was a struggle for me, but thank you, i think it was worth it.

Sometimes you need to just take in the view at the top of the hill rather than just figuring out how you're gonna climb the next one.

I like lyrics that are a bit vague, but with lines that peak out and help you get into what the song is about, so that's a great compliment, especially coming from a household with two fantastic writers.

I'll just shut up and say .. thanks, really appreciate the feedback.

Hey, great to hear from Leon, 'The Voice'. This was a bit of a change for me
(I'm
more comfortable with kinda indie-guitar stuff), so I've been really

So you're off to a club at 12 in the morning - man, I was asleep at that time!
Probably put to sleep by being dragged to see 'The Devil wears Prada' by

I especially like the backing vocals. You have a nice balance of self-depricating humor, cleverness, mainstream cohesion, and fun, almost wacky, sounds making it sound like your own brain has been cartoonized in the process of being brainwashed. great genre mix
this is very impressive. An awesome liason of three decades of Pop history. No need to struggle with the organic bass which makes the track sound very original (and perhaps an electro bass would be too obvious and would make this song sound too much 80ies-like).

Hi Steve
funny thing, that you've been around in Germany (and I hope you had a good time). Generally spoken I'm not fixed to one genre (there are lots of contradicting bands and styles rotating in my CD-player or lets better say: itunes) and I have to say I really love handmade music, too. But I have to admit that, as a lack of instruments (and skills on playing them) I'm somehow fixed to computer generated music.

(but why not starting a collab in this genre ;)

gets worse as the songs get older, tho' i have a soft spot for the cover of 'Summertime'. I was into Bauhaus before Bowie (in my teens), and saw them play for the first time about 2 years ago - they were great live.
