I Don't Miss The Rain

Description
This is my first solo project/original composition for quite some time. I was trying to avoid another slow ballad, so I decided to accelerate the pace and added some unconventional elements in this song to make it sound different from other songs I did in the past. It's my take of Justin Timberlake's song "Sexy Back."

This one is heavy on drums and percussion, but it becomes fully orchestral towards the end.

Lyrics
YouWantYourSexyBack/ I Don't Miss The Rain
Music, lyrics, and vocals by Leon

Verse 1
So you came around today
It's been a while since I last saw your face
What made you come this way
Don't think I even remember your name

Verse 2
The road leads to oblivion
Why didn't you just go on
Turning around won't right the wrong
Nor turn this hurt into song

Chorus:
And you took away my smile
and never looked back a while
It's winter and you melt my ice
and turned it into rain;
And I don't have to smile
I don't have to open my arms
It's summer and the clouds are here
but/and I don't miss the rain.

Verse 3
So you came around today
It's been a while since I last saw your face
What made you come this way
Don't think I even remember your name

Verse 4
The road leads to oblivion
Why didn't you just go on
Turning around won't right the wrong
Nor turn this hurt into song

(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge:
The tears have vanished from my eyes
I let the shadows fade at sunrise
Don't bring back the chills of winter's ice
I won't anymore throw love's dice...

(Repeat Chorus)

I'll definitely....
...take this over Justin Timberlake. The pounding percussion really works well, especially at the beginning when it's just basically the percussion and the vocals. The instrumental build up is nicely done and really sneaks up on you. Really helps heighten the "drama" of the song. Great vocals as always.

Thanks!
You are one of those whose pop sensibility I really rely on. You seem to have a good appreciation for stuff that I do, which a lot of rockers can't seem to appreciate. Your music resembles mine actually in a lot of ways, so your comments really mean much, as far as I'm concerned. This is a bit of deviation from my usual style, but I guess I needed something to experiment, and I'm really glad that you liked it. I remember, 2 years ago you were one of the first ones to give me pointers/comments, and I'm still learning. Thanks again!

good lord you are TALENTED! I love the percussion this. It's like a heartbeat nearing the boiling point of anger and rage. The build toward the full orchestration is slow and eager. I truly love the ending. Now THAT's what I call a climax. Did you say "so who cares... Fuck yeah"? haha! You are a musical powerhouse, my friend. Watch out world.

Geez, did I really say that? He-he! You know, I got carried away with the content of the song that's why it got in there! It sort of becomes the punch line of the song. This is one song I won't let my mom listen to I guess :-). Miss C, really appreciate your very encouraging feedback. I had so much reservation doing this song as it is really out of character for me. Really glad you actually liked it, and your comments really made me feel so justin-fied, er justified. Hmm, guess I'll make it raunchier next time to shock everyone a little more. Ha-ha!

Whew! That was a hot one.

Miss C said all of the things I wanted to! This is really terrific, Leon and shows a funkier side of what you can do, both with the music (the beats kill) and vocally.

At times the lead vocal seemed a bit too legato to go with the music, but that's a matter of taste, really. Every time the backing vox came back in it pulled it back into Funkyville, which I really enjoyed.

Leon said 4509 days ago (January 15th, 2007)
I'm giddy!
It's not everyday that I get a comment from both Miss C and Lisa, so understandably I'm a little giddy, he-he!

Great comments, Lisa! This song was intended to be an RnB ballad, which I decided later to go funky on. Which is why the legato treatment of the vocals. That's a great pointer you just gave me: make the syllables less extended and more staccato and that makes the rendition funkier! I'll do precisely that next time.

Thnaks so much for stopping by. Hope this song did not make you squirm ;-). I was a little worried that it may sound too raunchy. But you actually liked it and I'm ecstatic. Your opinion really means much!

This is my first dance song in a while, and the funkiest and most daring I've done (content wise), so it is great to hear that you are appreciating its rhythm. Hmm, you know the robot dance will suit this well, too, I think, but I was really thinking dirty dancing and lambada when I was singing it. Ha-ha! Thanks again, Vic!

Always great to read your appreciative comments on my song! I believe that everyone has a voice that is ready to come out. I heard you sing previously and you sounded good, but you just need to use it more. I grew up with a lot of doubts about my singing abilities, but positive feedback from guys like you just make me feel encouraged to develop this talent with even more confidence. Everyone can do that, I guess. Thanks again, my friend!

Even though...
...this is not my genre (I'm one of "rockers") I gotta give you two big thumbs up for this Leon. The driving and pulsating percussion provides an excellent foil for your fabulous vocalisings. Man you can really sing! The mix here is really clean and the orchestral stuff at the end works like a charm. Like jgurner, I'll take you over Mr. Timberlake any day of the week!

Be well!

PS: I'm an Oregonian. I don't miss the rain either! LOL!

Hi, Michael,
Welcome to the no-ratings club! Ha-ha!

Good to know you're not one of those rockers whose eyes roll up when they hear pop music. Nothing against musicians with exclusive taste, but I happen to appreciate pop and rock as much as any other genre of music. Thanks for your inspiring comments about the technical aspects of this song. This style is really a little outside my usual comfort level, but it was challenging and enjoyable venturing into untried territories. As regards Justin, I think he's made bold moves in his solo music, but honestly there's a lot of musicians here who can outshine him artistically.

I luv the spoken parts .... (and of course I also like that little track with the effect on it ... don't know what it is called - but one of the backing tracks I mean) .. AND yes ... there was that signature Leon - WHOA WHOA in there ... ! All the elements of a LEON song while adding some new and interesting elements as well. You need to take a little trip to Canada and teach me some of your tricks!

I see the CAPITAL letters and... the... ellipses... I just knew it is my fave macjammer Alannah! Are you sure after hearing this song you wanna know my tricks? Ha-ha!

...Oh, you mean, my musical tricks? My bad [blush]. If Canada were a drive away, I'll be there in heartbeat to educate you on what little I know about music. I'm sure you're great fun to teach! If your lovely voice sound great on your PC, you'll sound even more awesome with a Mac, I imagine.

By the way, that voice talking dirty in the song was recorded using a megaphone effect. That's my devil conscience singing a lustful counterpoint to my romantic heart-broken lead vocals. [naughty grin].

Garageband is so awesome, and it's free. Alannah, u gotta have a Mac soon!

Nice drum work. I feel like there wasn't enough going on melodically, but the vocal production is excellent. Oh wait...instruments are joining into the song. Ok nvm, now it sounds complete. Well, maybe you should have included a bass line or something to carry the intro better. Once it kicks in, it hits pretty hard. Good work!

Joel...
Thanks for the quick listen... Now that you pointed the atonal quality and Phillip comments about the lask of bass in the early phase of the song, I think it is probably a good idea to start the melodic bass earlier (say, in the second verse) rather than wait a full 2 verses and chorus before it starts. If you had finished listening to the end, you'll have noticed that the melody flourishes in full orchestra. Thanks for the helpful comment, Joel.

make sure to come back and leave a note. Damn, this is impressive! As much as I shy away from pop music, to me this has all of the right stuff to be up there with the best of 'em. This is top notch radio & dance-club material, no two ways about it. Outstanding performance, Leon!
Leon said 4509 days ago (January 16th, 2007)
Aw, Mikey!
Thanks for taking time to listen to this! As a matter of fact, I was inspired by your percussion-driven pieces. I actually listened repeatedly to your songs in my iTunes to try to emulate your awesome beats and rhythm. Not even close I think, but not shabby either, based on your assessment. :-) I thought if there was one Macjammer who would appreciate the percussion/drums in this song, it will be you. The vocals and everything else were simply spices on top of the beat, which I think is what drove this song from beginning to end.

Hey Leon, Thanks for the invite to come and listen to this cool driving track. I love the distorted/radio vocals. Down and dirty. (I'm one of those "rockers" too) OK, now is this the guy who came an commented on my song saying he didn't usually listen to "explicit" lyrics, hmmm? Well, well now.
Anyway I was listening and thought, I'm gonna D/L this and add a bass track to it. I have to agree with Aerojet on that one. I don't necessarily think it needs more melody, but a bass progression would get you the same effect without messing with the pureness of the drums and vocal effect you are going for. The production is great. Nice EQ on the vocals they cut through the complexities of the mix really well without getting muddy. Nice stuff. Or, as you said so eloquently: Fuck Yeah.

You got me!
Phillip, now you get me to eat my word on that one. Ha-ha! I've had an awakening of sorts since then... that expletive words can be used if artfully, not gratuitously, done. It's like nudity, has to be done if the script calls for it. It's like that Alanis Morisette song You Oughta Know where she screams "when you fuck her!" and it just seemed right for her to put it in there. I don't cuss in real life, but this one felt good and liberating and in keeping with the theme of the song. Just like you felt in your song. ;-)

Chance, hope everythings OK. You've been missing in action so great to have you back. Timberlake's song is all over radio and the clubs, but I imagine you don't do much of both, hehe. Not trying to trash him, but while I find his music bold, provocative and very dancy, it has nothing melodic in it, which is what I do differently in this spin-off.

Good luck in your studies and music and keep in touch here. Just gave your music a listen, too, and glad to know you're back in your poetic form. You been performing music anywhere recently?

Wow!
Amazing vocals as always, and you've done wonders with the backing tracks. Have you been to "how to make a pop record" school or something while you were away from MJ?? Your music is up there with Slide and Jesushairdo in the pop genre for sure (or maybe they are up there with you!). You really have one of the most incredible pop voices here (or anywhere), and a really good feel for a sellable song. What's a Justin Timberlake?
Did I say "amazing"?

Neil, thanks!
Neil, your comment is precious! Slide and Jesushairdo are high on my list of admired pop/rock artists here at Macjams, so to put me alongside their names is a big compliment. As regards the change in my style, you probably know already that some of the things we put in our songs are sometimes just accidental, like serendipity. You drop a sound element or lyric in there not knowing how it would sound and suddenly, whoa, that sounds perfect in there! A lot of the elements here were experimented on before I reached the final form. The production was laborious as I've never used so many tracks layers before, but I'm happy to note that it has pleased Jiguma's discriminating ears! The vocals are icing on the cake, but I don't wanna rely on it as much as before to deliver the music. I realize how important it is to develop the lyrics and music rather than the vocals to make it a more complete piece. The sexual content of this song was also a heavily pondered decision, as it is not really in my character to talk dirty, ha-ha! Well, just like you are doing so effectively in your own music, I am trying to stretch beyond my comfort zone and it feels very fulfilling. Thanks so much for your wonderful critique and the red-lettered reminder, too ;)

It's all good
Dude! I'm sitting here listening, and found myself totally entranced by this production! I mean I really did have my lower jaw hangn' south! Round bout the two minute mark, chills raced up my entire body w/ the feel goods

Sexxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxy!

Freakn' hot assed beat! How'd you do that?

Dude, this took an awful lot of intense focus. I'm trying to imgaine that one person was in charge of all departments... Incredible

In somewhat of a state of disbelief...

The build up... Those clanky electronic bangy sounds...

YOUR SINGING... That alone took an amount of focused effort that I'm not equipped to imagine... Very nice Vox! Sexy, again.

I'm completely blown sideways and upside right by this.

You done good!

Too Hot!

F#@K yeah... Eh eh eh We liked that part too

Thanks! Macca - (And yes, I am he...)

Where the f...k have you been????
Hahaha! Dion, your comment just made me so hyper I kept going back to it to read it before I slept last night. I think I should print out your remarks in PDF format and frame it!

Truth be said, I did not expect this song to turn out the way it did. I was thinking of singing an RnB song about (yawn) another love song, and I thought, hey I've done that kind of song in 17 of my 20 songs. So I thought why not something totally out of character for me, something fast, raunchy and dirty, which really scared me 'cause that might poke some holy raw nerves here. I've always been a sweet boy, you know. He-he! Anyway, I carried the same lyrics I wrote and started a fast beat background to start with. Then I thought about JT's Sexy Back, how hip and rhythmic his music is but rather pale in terms of melody. So I thought I want that but a little more substance and distinct vocals but with the same raunchy elements in it. I went to the MIDI beat and drum options of GB and the jampacks and started sampling every sound avaialable on the keyboard. Man, you are the king of these MIDI percussion and beat stuff, so you know how it went from there. I was careful not to overwhelm it and that the strings and drums and vocals were holding separate space so as not to clash...

The vocal stylings just followed. Some of the things I mumbled and screamed in there were spontaneous and impromptu, and listening to it later made me really cringe, especially the "F--k, yeah!" in the end. But it was honest and that was the intended effect, so I left them all there in raw, un-edited form.

Meanwhile, I have been cowering in a corner and waited for news regarding my excommunication from my Catholic parish. So reading your review last night just made my night and day, dude! (Or should I call you Father Dion? Word around Macjams is that you are holding communion and confession days and punched a rabbi here.) Regards to Cyd! I miss the guy, but you are funny and energetic two times over. :-)

Pounding funkin' horny
What the f**k happened to you, man? You sound like you've just had the shag of your life and run straight to get the feeling down on tape (or hard drive). This is really different for you, but ...wow. The drums and percussion sound ace, and really give the song drive - reminds me a little of 'When Doves Cry', the way you use the drums to ground the song.

The structure is really loose, and what blows my fuckin' (sorry, gotta be explicit !) gourd is that the track is quite clean and uncluttered, but there are so many great little changes and moments that it keeps your attention throughout.

Vocals are ace, as ever, but there's a sweet little tension between the verse and the chorus (which is a little more traditionally melodical). This sounds like a great dance track, but also quite experimental. There's a really great balance between romance and sexual tension here, which i've never really heard anywhere before.

To be honest, i'm pretty stunned by this - it's a big change for you but man, you really pulled it off.

Kudos - what a track!

blood hell, yeah!
Steve, you really get me! It's like you entered my brain and read every dirty details stuck in there, LOL! That was exactly my intention -- sing romance and heartbreak in the lead, then sing dirty and raunchy in the back up vocals, like a tag-of-war between the lusty devil and lovelorn angel conscience. It was a rather brave move, as all my love songs have been puritannical ballad shit in he past. LOL. Still love them, but I craved a little change of pace and some surprise like you always manage to do with your songs. I was afraid it might backfire, but so far no one's flipped the finger on me yet, well at least not to my face. Ha-ha! Not sure if my mom heard it already, but I haven't heard a congratulatory phone call yet. She might mail me a bible and rosary in the next few days. Haha!

Well, this is a spin-off on the theme of Sexy Back by JT, but more melodic and thumpier. I'm not sure I'm settled on this. My romantic voice is wanting to re-assert itself I think. But whew, that was liberating! Thanks so much for your explicit remarks.... just loosened me up a lot, and you've been such an influential instigator of all this! LOL!

Great lyrics and melody and perfect production.
I really like the minimalist feel to the production even though it is quite complex. Nothing gets in the way of anything else in the mix and everything has its own space in the mix. That is something that is easy to appreciate but hard to achieve. You have done it very well here. A great pop piece.
