-----(original description for this version)---------------------
After giving my ears a rest and also reading feedback people gave me here I worked on this more and made numerous tweaks. Nothing that is likely to jump right out at you if you don't know what to listen for but all things that improve the song in different small ways. I adjusted levels, edited some notes, modified some effects settings, edited echo effect down to selec areas rather than constant, fixed a few timing issues, and other little things I can't remember.

I'll likely give it another mastering pass before it goes on the next CD but it's pretty much where I want it and I'm quite a bit happier with this refined version.

The Universe is only as big as the space between us.

Lyrics
There must be some explanation
for how the world keeps going on
breaking up into tiny fractions
spiraling inwards while coming undone
So tell me
tell me

It's all simple division
Split one unit into two
Take the third and throw it away
What did it ever do for you?
but make you worry
you worry

Take this home and number the doors
Cleanse the commons with bleach and lye
Now it's just a tenement and nothing more
Simple subdivide
It's easy
easy

Always closer, always approaching
each step shorter than the last
Cast away those little orphans
It's simple division if you do this kind of math

You can dice fractions of fractions
You can cut up a heart all you like
You can carry the one 'til the day you die
stacking boxes in boxes with boxes inside

Do you ever feel like you're growing nowhere?
You hurry
You hurry

Where are those little lost orphans
those little pieces left behind
Are they in pockets in closets in spare rooms in corners of houses
in this suburban subdivide

Take this hand and close it
over your crooked faltering smile
Look in these eyes and transmit
your alien lullaby
fading
and fading

You're always closer and approaching
but you shrink with every step
What do you do with all those orphans
that you cut off from the rest

It's all simple division
Split one heart into two
Take the third and throw it away
What did it ever do for you?
but make you complete
complete

There must be some explanation
for how the world keeps going on
breaking up into tiny fractions
spiraling inwards while coming undone
So tell me
tell me

Nice
Great production. This is the level that I one day hope to aspire to. Thanks for the inspiration.

Amazing
I think this is phenomenal in every way and gave it straight 10s.

I do have a comment though, which, given the fact that you are satisfied with the song as it stands, you should feel free to ignore-also, I'm listening through my laptop speakers, which doesn't make for a good critical listening environment. So, with those disclaimers out of the way, Here goes:

I think the intro is brilliant -- it sets up the mood of the song and draws me in right away. One aspect I particularly like is the simplicity; when you've got a powerful song, it mostly speaks for itself and too much production only gets in the way.

So you've got this really amazing but simple intro, but the first time we hear your voice it has some kind of effect on it. The processing is relatively subtle, but the fact that it's there at all seems counter to the feel I'm getting from the simple intro. I would therefore consider beginning with little or no vocal processing, with a similar vocal sound to the one you use in the "Take this hand and close it" verse, and then introduce your voice sound processing to the second verse (i.e. as it currently stands).

There are many, many things I love about this, but one that I'll mention is the overall form, and the way you have this pregnant pause just before the "Take this hand..." verse, and the way the texture thins out for the start of that verse. The whole thing is filled with subtle and wonderful creative touches.

You've got a really amazing song here.

Thanks
Thanks, Clark. I see what you mean about the amount of effect of the voice at the beginning. It's one of those things I'm quit satisfied with but that I might work on dialing back a little. If only GB allowed animation of effect controls so I didn't have to make another set of tracks for each variation. I got so many tracks in this one already. I appreciate the input and that's something I'll keep in mind when I give it a final pass before putting it on the album.

Like I said before, but more so
Reminds me of the myth of the Androgyne. I always feel incomplete, never totally the amount of loss, never able to fill myself as much as the love I've been given (or imagine). This song heightens that existential feeling. I do recall a very pretty teachers assistant telling us, "Mitosis is in my toes; Meiosis is in my ovaries." I always remember that. (One more example of subdivision.) By the way, a perfect track. Great writing, lyrics, arranging, mix. Perfect. Bravo.

Great
There's a lot of gradual builds in this, which you handle really well; subtle but very effective. All of the instruments, and your singing, are handled like a true perfectionist, not a hair out of place. Very pro.

Thanks, PV. Noodling with the details becomes sort of addictive/obsessive for me. I'm glad it paid off.

This sure seems like
a very pro level songster here peter. With your level of talent is is a wonder to me why in the world your not doing this for a living. You have what I would think, have the current sound that people of today that like popular music, creative popular music, would truly like. I would think that you should be able to tour with the likes of Sting and Elton John etc. People shouldn't wonder who is better.

Terrific Peter!

Thanks, Bill. I appreciate your support. I never really thought I could make a living or even a significant side income from my music. It seems like such a tough business even for people with everything going for them. I feel like I'd get lost just trying to compete for that place on the field. But comments like yours at least make me feel like I've come along to a level where I could if I really wanted to and that's probably good enough for me, at least at for now.

Just two or three years ago I didn't even know I could give it away like this and get anyone to listen.

I still love this song
everything I said last time

"you are taking this thing, (songwriting/producing) that we all tend to be technicians with and about.. then you paint and sculpt... now don't get me wrong... I know it wasn't easy from your end.. but as I sit and listen, you draw me in with such well crafted lyrics/melody/performance... artistry... something from the heart"

still applies...

It was helpful for me to see this... I'm wanting to do some remixing, even though the song is doing well.... but here, everything that I love about what your doing is not in the minutia... I sat and A-B'd both versions twice... and I could scarcely tell the difference...

It is an essential part of the process for me... (going back in several times and tweeking), but I'm not sure those that aren't as close to the song as I will notice

Thanks for commenting again, Scott.

The way I look at it, regarding all the detail work and fine tuning, is that people generally won't consciously recognize all the particular qualities or all the changes but those things will still improve the listening experience. Sometimes the tiniest detail can affect a person subconsciously, too slight to identify but enough to trigger something in them.

It's a sort of philosophy I employ in my animation and visual effects work, refining details, usually so that a viewer DOESN'T see it, not consciously. It's usually the flaws that draw attention to themselves. An actor getting thrown across a room at an unnatural trajectory looks like a stunt done with wires on a movie set... whilst the same shot viewed again but with the motion of the actor following a natural arc through the air just looks like that poor dude really got thrown across the room. Most people don't quite appreciate the difference but it still makes a difference in their subconscious and they believe it more.

Besides, it's fun to noodle with that stuff.

This is excellent songwriting, excellent singing, and excellent producing, Peter.

I love your singing. I can't do other than listen, and listen deep.

Love the backgrounds in this, from the keyboard things and the percussion things and the background vocals...

I'm out of words.

Wow, gorgeous!
Lovely dynamic piano, and the bass lifts it nicely. I love the various harmonies, and it's very clever what you've done with them, making them contrast in tone with the main vocal rather than simply blending. There's a touch of Bowie in the vocal, though I don't mean to imply that you sound like anyone other than you, because you've developed such a unique style. All your songs seem to break new ground and try out new ideas while remaining very distinctively PG.

The song is beautifully written and constructed, exquisited produced, and emotionally captivating. It's truly gorgeous. Another fabulous piece of work, Peter. You have my sincerest respect!

Thanks, Rebs. I'm glad you and others have mentioned liking the piano. It's all pencil work. I put a lot of work into making it dynamic and natural in its performance. Some might find it a tedious way to work but I've found it kind of mesmerizing working that way, writing note per note and tweaking the velocity by hand. But in the end I want it to sound good and organic.

Thanks for listening since I first posted on MJ.
