Description
Originally a song I wrote and performed in Scotland in my early 20s, it retains that glam rock/metal sound .. but has been completely re-vamped courtesy of the kind and excellent performances of MJs own and extremely talented Steve Craig and Ian Baird. Please check out their profile pages (links below).

echoroom - vocals, lyrics, new concept
Ian Baird - drums and bass
APB - the rest

Lyrics
Storming heaven,
We'll bring the fire down.

A little storm in the desert
Come join the march to victory,
Assassination in Dallas,
Come join the 26th cavalry.

When you're safe in your homeland,
Tracer-fire looks really cool,
You feed the machine your money,
Let it march all over you.

It's all good for the economy,
(It's complex)
Industrial mmm military
I've seen your future and it's history,
It 'ain't pretty, pretty

Storming heaven - an eternal vision,
Storming heaven - via live transmission
Hard-wired coming to your town,
We'll bring the fire down.
Storming heaven - for the magic kingdom,
Storming heaven - via live transmission
Hot-wired coming for your crown,
We'll bring the fire down.

A little trouble in Saigon,
Tricky Dick's gonna take you in,
You leave Iraq and the deal's blown,
Dubya's gonna make you a man.

Somewhere has gotta be evil,
Somewhere has gotta be brought to task,
Something you better believe in,
We'll never stop and it never ends.

"the USA has no right, no desire and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else" - G.W.Bush

Noone's safe from freedom
Noone's safe from freedom
A political reason
There's only our kind of freedom
(M16)
Right?

No reason
No reason
No reason to sell

We'll bring the fire down!
When Alan sent this to me, I got chills. I've done a lot of moody stuff lately and really wanted to do something rocking, which is the stuff I listen to.
Anyway, I'm hoping they play this at the Republican Party convention this year.
A real pleasure working with these guys! Thank you so much for the invite!

super power collab!!!
great tune! great lyrics!
great performances by all!
my only nit is that perhaps the vocals overpower everything else. i really like what the instruments are doing, and would like to hear more of them... but that's only minor
this really is a killer track guys.
you all deserve a huge pat on the back.
steve, it's nice to hear you really lay the 'smack' down!

:o)
did I tell you so? .. oh ok, I told you so .. lol ;o)

Nevermind .. glad now I took the approach to bring out the vocals more in mix IV by using a little ducking of the guitar parts (rather than to mix lots of instruments down a bit) .. much easier to undo.

I think to be fair we had been listening to vocal strong mixes .. so the vocals were bound to sound a bit buried where I placed them by comparison in mix III... and thus
you asked to bring them out a bit more... which I did.

In metal songs the vocals are typically a little less prominent than pop... then again it could still just be
my quite nearfield placement of some backing vocals that
make together with the C parts .. makes them stand-out.

the great work you and Allen are doing.

Lyrically
amazing!

I've seen your future and it's history...

somewhere's gotta be evil...there's only our kind of freedom.

I think some metal doesn't feature the vocals 'cause the vocals are incoherent (which isn't a bad thing--Thom Yorke, one of my favorite singers, is often incoherent). However, this ASKS to be vocal heavy, 'cause the lyrics are so poignant. I think ducking was a good idea because the intro is definitely a power house tribute to the instruments. And they sound amazing.

Anyway, incredible collab. I'd submit it to the next volume of "Rock Against Bush".

mainly
vocals in metal are low volume because most metal singers have lost thier ability to sing.....check out some metalicious singing on the Montgomery California page, my dear...

Wow
A girl who knows about ducking (Alan had to explain it to me)... does your fiance know how lucky he is!!???

Took ages to write the lyrics, 'cause I didnt want them to be just anti-war sloganeering, so they're kinda written as a call to arms be a , er, very right wing government.

I must admit, i really like how this turned out lyrically - thanks for bigging'em up girly!

Glad to hear ...

.. your memory is as bad as mine Fred .. er .. Allen ;o)

If anyone should know about mixing guitars and vocals (unbiased) in a metalish song - I would have to assign you one of the most qualified MJers I know on this subject ..

I'm still not convinced we went soo metal really .. lol .. still kinda 'hard rock' sound to me .. oh, I dunno ..

I actually had a point when I was planning more guitar tracks for the break bit .. but went into production mode ..and to be honest, it worked out .. as otherwise I wouldn't have felt there was room perhaps for the samples idea.

Thanks again for stopping in - sorry been busy and only
now catching up with some replies.

;o)

Ian is extremely professional .. and really took to this like it was second nature... he blew us both away with his
parts and what they brought to the song.

Steve and I had done some video exchanging: to pass on vocal melody ideas .. and mails on the concept and lyrics .. and the usual back and forth with mixes... was really cool ..
loads of fun.

I Personally Believe...
That when a song has a strong message, the vocal should be more prominent. It's often a tricky bit of business to find a happy medium in the mix, but I'd rather hear them clearly like they are hear.

Nice work all around... Ian's solid Rhythm section, Alan's somewhat Bostonesque guitar work and Steve's Bowie-like vocals.

Somehow I kept hoping for some flaming smoke cannons, but saw none. :p

what message? ;o)

.. thanks Joe .. I thought the mortar fire was enough this
time lol.

Shopping list: milk, bread, eggs, smoking canons ..

Hmm .. I hear what you mean .. that guitar tone when
with a harmonised part does give a twinge of Boston doesn't it? If I recall .. (which is going back a long way) I wrote
it as try a harmonised bit of guitar .. for a touch of Iron Maiden (if anything).

Any tips on bring out guitars a bit without swamping vocals?

Good one guys!
Don't tell me I beat Feter to a song!

But I digress - Like all the playing/singing/writing/etc, but agree about the vocals being too big in the mix - just doesn't fit the syle.

An easy fix no doubt.

Neil

You did!

27 mins and 45 seconds to be precise Neil! ... on the vocal levels.. I think there is perhaps some room to bring up some guitar without swamping/burying or making the vocals incoherent .. but I need some new mixing trick to help achieve that and I'm more than happy with this as it is too .. it's starting to appear as a taste specific thing, and that's good - you can't argue with that lol ;o)

Makes me ponder if there is a db difference in 'coherence perception' for non-US English dialects with US listeners...hmm.

wow and thanks to everyone!
I had a lot of fun playing on this.... and I consider it my 1st official MJ collab (insert "yay" here)....

APB asked me to clarify what I used in way of Software & Hardware so here it goes.....this will be the most detailed I've ever gotten about my gear and wanderings....here goeth the geeketh speaketh....

Software Used: Pro-Tools 5.2.1 (OS 9), Cubase LE(OS X), Ampeg SVX
Comps: 2003 eMac G4 700 MHZ RAM 768 megs w/MAudio Buddy
2000 Mac G4 Tower 500 MHZ Ram 640 Megs w/ DIGI 001 and Presonus BlueTube Preamp

Bass Rig: Fender HM-5, 5 String Bass w/ 3 Jazz Bass Pickups on a 5 way selector switch.... Ran into a small and very cheap plastic silver Zoom guitar multi effect pedal..... I used a healthy dose of distortion and a mild speaker emulator....from there into the Blue Tube with a fair amount of tube drive....from there into the DIGI 001 into Pro-Tools.... A touch of Comp....then out of Pro-Tools....transfered to the eMac.... into Cubase where I then applied the Ampeg SVX Plug In via VST....In Ampeg SVX I used the BA-500 head w/ the 8x10 cab mic'd w the 441 on axis at a far setting.... mic distance slider set to four....from there to APB to you

Drum Kit: This is a bit of a hodge podge.... my rack tom 13x13 (mounted on a RIMS mount), floor tom(s)16x16,(note: I also have an 18x18 floor tom but did not use it in this session) and kick 24x16 are all Mid 70's Slingerlands w/ Maple Shells....The Snare was a Mid 90's Steel Ludwig Supra 400 w/ Hand Hammered Shell (I also own a mid 80's Rogers Snare but again did not use it on this session) Batter heads are all Remo White Coat Ambassadors except the kick which is a clear Evans....(note: I prefer clear emperor heads for my toms but on my last trip to the store all they had were white coats....)

Cymbals: 14" Zildjian Hi-Hats, 18" Zildjian A Custom Crash, 20" Zildjian Heavy Crash and a 20" Zildjian Medium Thin Crash(cracked and lovely) and a 22" UFIP Ride

Kick Pedal: 1991 Tama Double Pedal
Sticks: Vic Firth Buddy Rich Model-Hickory-(yes I hate that they are only made in white, but nothing feels better in my stubby fingers)

Mics: For the Kick I used a Shure Beta 58 inside the kick drum, a Shure SM-57 was used on the snare....and 2 Apex Large Diaphragm Condesor mics for overheads....kick and snare went straight into the front of the DIGI and the overheads went into the Blue Tube then into the DIGI....once in Pro-Tools I applied compression and EQ to individual drum tracks....that's it....NO REVERB....they were in my diningroom w/ wood floors....so the room has enough of it's own....overheads were fairly low to the kit to get a nice balance between the cymbals and the toms....the cymbals can cut and the toms still thud....some of the best recordings of drums have been done using only 2 or 3 mics.... so let it be a lesson....use the room....not the plug-in....the best reverb is made by God and it's all around you....so dial it in wherever you are and use it....then out of Pro-Tools w/ the separated drums tracks....from there to APB to you

If anyone has anymore questions (settings, superstitions) feel free to hit me up....I've been so long winded I now feel foolish.... oh well....thanks to the boyz 4 letting me make my noyze....I can't believe the response this song has gotten and it hasn't even been up 24 hours yet....thanks again :)

peace....Ian

Yay! :o)

thank you Ian, take a bow .. or Ianindemand .. as I have started refering to you as ;o) .. your bass and drums especially, really did take this to a level I could never
attain myself - as did Steve's vocals.

Your take on the more instrumental bridge was awesome:
love that kinda "Faith No More" version of "war pigs" it
brought into the (battle)field.

Thanks also for your time to writing up this impressive list- wow - I like the geeketh speeketh...

For others casual interest, I only added a little (room) 'mastering reverb' to the overall track with Ozone 3.. and I focused on reverbing higher freq ranges .. so mostly a touch of additional reverb on the snare, hi-hats and cymbals - helped to make us sound a little more in the same space/together I thought too... each vocal track was
treated individually in this respect.

I dig this
Its something about a song sung with an english accent that brings a new dynamic to it. I'm really liking this.

One question; it sounds kinda like its more than one person singing at times and I was wondering did you work some effect, record the vocals twice and layered them all together or was there really more than one person singing. Just a question.

I really like the Bush clip in it. Great message all around.

Thanks Mitchell
.. Steve seems to have nodded 'orf .. :o) to answer your question: there are multiple vocal tracks but 99% all Steve ..
these aren't duplicates they are different parts layered together. eg. the verses have 3 parts: main, megaphone and a higher harmony part .. and in fact in the verses, truth be known, I do a tiny little vocal part for effect (with FX) that goes "ah ah ah ah aw ah ah ow" .. with a filter on, to add a little spice to the instruments sound really .. it's blended in .. and hardly noticeable... lol.

Steve has an excellent voice and does great songs too (been impressed by his uploads for some time) and I was flattered he took to this one, as I did have him in mind for giving this one a go.. he still retains slight N.Ireland accent in his speaking voice btw... but does sound more 'English' when singing.

sorry guys I nodded off there!

A lot of the vocals are multitracked with harmonies.
Though alan did put some cool effects on as well
in total there were about 8 -9 vocal tracks used

You think I sound English alan ... This could
be the end of a beautiful reslationship. LOL!

Great, powerful song
Amazing sound, and terrific performances. The production on this is outstanding - professional sounding in every way - and the playing is so good. Great placement of the guitars in the mix, in particular, so everything is there, but not overwhelming. Great lyrics, and performed with real passion. What a great combination of talent! Nice work, guys. Peace.

By the way, Steve, the Republican Convention is here in St. Paul this year, so maybe I'll stand outside with a ghetto blaster and see what happens...

Metal Protest
Nice collab guys. This song rocks. If they had metal in the 60's maybe the protest songs would have been taken more seriously. Or at least been heard more. Anyway thanks for sharing this.

Fantastic!
Great sound but I would have liked louder guitars because they had such great tone- hooked me immediately. Unbelievable vocal and a powerful protest song... a modern day "War Pigs" if you will.

Amazing how easy it is to collaborate these days, isn't it?

Great...
...and, the sicker part of it (as if it wasn't bad enough) is that the military industrial complex ain't bringin' the bucks into the countries like it used to...like so many other financial arenas: it's going more and more into private hands...and the plot just sickens and sickens...

From the artwork through everything in the tune, this is really something...kudos, guy...wish it wasn't this way...

Loved the harmonizing guitars, The changes in the progression keep the listener attended. Sounds so Late 90's American Rock. Great collaboration, great mix!

Alan, this is more than a great METAL song! The music work and the guitar sound are just top notch. The vocals, as always, I'm in love with Steve's vocal. This is a true metal masterpiece. KUDOS to both of you!

FINALLY!!
GOT HERE! Man i love this tune. Those drums are amazing. and that6 guitar riff! everythings so polished and tight. I cant believe you got that drum sound using 4 mics 2 of which are dynamics! I really want to try my hand at recording a kit one day. The arrangement is great too. That bit with the G.W Bush quotation reminded me of Guns n Roses 'Civil War', one of my favorite tunes. Thanks for this Guys!
