Losing You Again

This is just some incidental music, and it's one of my favorite things that I've made so far.

I made this in record time for me; something like two to three hours. It's very short and very simple, so at some point I think I'm going to add another theme to it, and expand it a bit.

The instruments aren't quite right, but I don't think I'll ever master GarageBand. Or maybe it's that there's only so much I can do.

Thanks for listening!

Re: Feter
Thank you, as always, for your encouraging comments. I really appreciate it.

I agree, I like it as it is now, but as you say I think I can take it a little further at some point. And I too really like the Cello as well. It was a great surprise to hear it work so well with the other instruments.

Losing You Again
Song Writing/Content: This is a really nice soundtrack creation Mike - as you say, it's short, but I can see why it's one of your favourites. I'd probably like to hear an extended and more developed version if you get around to re-doing it.

Production/Performance: Production is solid - it sounds good and there is a nice spread of instrument. The instruments do sound a little "virtual" though - I guess that's what you mean about them not being "quite right". Feter is correct, that's a great cello sound. Performance is accurate and controlled - right for the genre.

Originality/Creativity: I guess I'd have to say it's a simple piece, and there's not much new there. I like the sounds you used and the role of the piano is especially good.

Overall rating in genre: OK - the truth is, I'm not very experienced in this sort of thing, and when I listen to this I think of it against some of Magnatone's work (which I see as exceptional examples of "cinematic soundtrack"). In comparison to those, it's good but not exceptional. As a standalone piece I think most people would agree that your work on it has been really worthwhile.

I hope this is helpful,

Re: Neil
It's definitely helpful Neil! Thanks very much!

I am already in the process of developing this more. It'll be a while, but I think this piece, while simple, has more potential. I always have trouble with the strings, and before I upload something new, I will try to recreate them to be more realistic. Though I am working with GarageBand, and I'm sure it has its limits.

You saying this is good but not exceptional is a great compliment for me. I really just started to make music, and I only have very basic musical knowledge. I'm not expecting to make anything exceptional right now, and I'm not sure I ever will. I'm okay with that, because I really enjoy the making this music. And with the feedback I get here, from you and others, I know definitely improve.

Thanks again! I appreciate it.

May I suggest something ?
Some of the strings sounds may sound a bit more natural if you increased the ATTACK time of the sound and gave a bit more on the RELEASE time on the instruments sound envelope.
I love your music.

Of course you may suggest anything! I love comments, complaints, suggestions, etc! It's the only way I can learn.

And that is a very good suggestion, thank you. Strings are a little tricky for me, and you bring up a great point. Someday, I'll be putting a remastered and lengthened version of this up on MJ.
And I'm so glad you like my music.

stuff you have going on here. I myself composed with the idea that my music is a part of a scene in a movie. You have achieved that purpose.

I like the tones around '38

Re: edpdx
Thanks for your compliments! I'm glad you feel I have achieved a film score feel here. I actually had a scene in mind when I wrote this... you know, I really should try that again. :)

I like the tones around '38 too. It's good to hear what parts others particularly like; very helpful to me, thanks.

This would definitely underscore a very emotional or dramatic scene in film. It's simplicity is evocative and it's not so complex as to distract a viewer from whatever the subject matter would be on film. This piece seems to highlight the sense of loneliness and loss you were aiming for. The cello does have a nice sound; I'd try to spread the strings across the spectrum a bit with some panning and played with the attack and release settings. I think strings are exceptionally challenging to work with in GB. This is an interesting score! Hope to hear more as you develop this!

Re: RickB1
That's exactly what I was going for! Loneliness, and loss, without being overbearing. Incidental music I guess is how I would word it. So glad that you also felt it.

Someday I will return to this. I already have, and yet have left it behind once more. The time I have to make music is limited, but after seeing the response to this, I will try to make the time! :)

Nice work!
Mike as far as the instruments sounding real, I have found two things that help. I have a chart of the orchestra and I try to position the instruments in space where they would really be. I also place them in a large hall as I think they sound the best that way. Sometimes though, the software libraries you use will already have ambiance applied and then you just have to be careful it isn't overdone. Also, as I leaned here on MJ, when writing horn or wind parts, in real life they are played by human beings that have to breath. There should be appropriate rests in those parts.
Good job,

Re: sschedra
Thanks for the suggestions. As a far as the instruments go, I have a new sample library, and that helps a lot. Working with GB is tough, though I have heard amazing stuff, considering, here, and elsewhere with it. Great advice!

You got up in the morning.
She was gone. The pillow held the hollow where he head had lain, but the bed and blankets were cold. You went to the window. Put your hands on the sill. You knew she would leave someday. She told you she would. If only you knew her real name. Thanks.

I can only listen to my music once. Thanks for the feedback, and the imagery. You've allowed me to listen a second time, and see it in a way I hadn't before.
