Submarine Serenade

This is my most recent song with Reason 4. It gets slightly redundant but I hope that there is enough variation in it to hold the listeners attention! Let me know if you like it or not, how the mix sounds, or anything else along those lines!

Thanks for listening!

HH bed
Thanks for asking for a Critics Circle comment from me. The mix sounds nicely balance, since you asked. Yes, it is quirky, in the varied collection of sounds you used. Nearly random, but the obvious eclectic nature of the track suspends a listeners desire for standard sounds; they all meld together nicely, successfully, except maybe the synth horn section hits just before the harmonica. (I mention this becuz all the other sounds conjure up a real person playing, or a mood, but the synth trumpet section (?) just makes me think of someone at their computer using samples, which isn't an image that is compelling, in my mind. Likewise, the software harmonica is a little stiff, since a real player would add natural mouth/breath articulations, but I didn't mind its use here.)

Overall, I'm not sure what you are going for, who the intended audience is, etc., so it's hard to critique, since I feel those things are important. In my ears, this sounds like a rhythmic experiment, a music bed waiting for something to go dub the top, whether it be a hip-hop thing, melodic lines, or whatever; or, it could be a nice film score background since it wouldn't pull focus. As a stand alone piece of music, it befuddles me, since it doesn't really transcend the music bed concept, almost like a draft track for trying out things as opposed to a completed piece. But I think you have nice balance, have kept the idea of "quirky" alive through in a consistent manner, and given it a nice momentum. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your comments Tobin. It doesn't bother me at all that the instruments don't sound real. Perhaps maybe I should alter them more so they don't sound real at all. I'm also a little glad that it befuddles you because that is sort of the reaction I am going for, sort of a "what the hell is this supposed to be" comment. I guess I am trying to blur boundaries, blur what is real and what is computer generated. On further reflection I guess this is meant for people who are more into experimental stuff and don't listen to Top 40 radio. Ultimately I will be going for a small fan base to build organically over time. To get an idea of some bands that have been influencing me lately check out The Octopus Project and Black Moth Super Rainbow. Again, thank you for taking the time to listen and give your honest feedback!
