Description
My first attempt at composition since my music GCSE and some would say it shows! Not being very accomplished musically I wanted to see exactly how much I could do just using default GarageBand loops. The only art involved was deciding what loops sounded best and where. That said, I'm rather happy with the finished project, particularly as I did the whole thing in an hour (which includes the time it took me to get used to using GarageBand!).

Thank you very much! My first comment: how exciting…And it was
positive too! What a nice community this is. GarageBand loops are a
great place to start, particularly for musically untalented folks like me
who want to compose despite that obvious limitation. I'm going to try to
incorporate something real into my next effort though. Thanks for the
comment and congratulations on the pun!

Lovely jaunty rhythm
For someone who claims to be talentless it's a pretty
good debut. I like the way you've offset some of the
loops so that not all of them fall on the beat - it
keeps the song chugging along and gives it its own
natural rhythm. I look forward to hearing your next
one.

Lovely jaunty rhythm
I don't have much real musical talent but I do have an ear for what I like!
I worked hard on getting this track to sound right for me and in that
respect at least I know I've succeeded. If anyone else likes it then that's a
huge bonus. Thanks everso for the kind comments.

Very cool
I saw the title somewhere on the site and loved it. The
song wasn't what I was expecting. Well put together. It
had my head bopping the whole way through.

Glad you liked the title. I like a good head bop and I encourage everyone
to head bop at least once a day. I'm honoured that you felt able to bop
your head the whole way through my track. Thanks for the kind words.

i likes it . . .
it's always surprising to see, or is that hear ? . .
how diverse the songs that are created purely
with loops can be . . .
this is a fine bit of looping . . .
the overall track has got the feel of a mature composition,
but has some interesting sounds and beats woven in . . .
which will appeal to the jungsters ! . .

Thanks, Denny Donor! Very nice comments and they're much
appreciated. I must get on with my new track. I've just started recording
it but progress is slow when you're trying to fit it around work
commitments. Sorry to hear about your cover, by the way. Any chance
you might get permission from the original artist/record company? It's
probably a long shot but maybe worth a go.

In the loop...
You've definitely proven there is a reason for loops and a
deserved place for them in song creation! I love the
originality of this piece and how you compiled
those snatches of sound into one groovin' composition.
Well done!

In the loop...
Thanks everso much for the kind comments. Very encouraging. The
loops did sort of just 'fall into place' - sometimes things just sound
right, don't they? Anyway, thanks again.

Pretty decent
Good use of loops, except in the drums. When the drum
falls silent it's a bit too obvious that you're just throwing
the "off" switch. A real drummer would still hit something
on the first beat of the silent measure. Just take one beat
from the current loop, or some other. A cymbal crash is
the typical solution.

Epileptic Gibbon said 5032 days ago (February 6th, 2005)
Pretty decent
To be honest, the problem with the drums that you mention did occur to
me too, though on reflection I think that the drums don't sound natural
anyway so it doesn't matter too much if they don't do what a real
drummer would do. They keep the beat and that's the main thing. It's a
fair point, though, and I appreciate you taking the time to make
constructive criticism. I was inspired to check out your old songs and
was very impressed with some of them.

Caroline, bless you for your comments on both my tracks. I know that
probably neither is quite your bag so it means all the more that you took
the time to say a few words. I'm interested to know the story behind you
feeling differently about this after the third listen... or don't I want to
know?! I'm glad that we're all having fun on MacJams… it is like Willy
Wonka's Chocolate Factory! Except without the Oompalumpas. I'm
intrigued about the numbers but I won't ask. pssst - yes, this is exactly
the kind of thing I meant, thanks.

For a first go or 20ths go this is a fine piece, really, really
liked the use of accosutic piano and the trassitions were

getting them to flow, but you did fine.

Cool
It's great sometimes just to freeform and make something from loops. I did the same with some grabs from Fight Club as a learning project for GB. So much fun. Recently I've been getting software loops and changing the instrument used to something completely different and then screwing about with the effects to get some different sounds.

Good Song
I realy like it. It is the kind of music i like to hear when i'm at
work. I think it must have a better rating. In the future you
must change the piano loops with a composed piano line.
that would make it a better tune.

Nice work!

Ah, bless you, dude! Glad you liked it, though I'm trying to work out

of course it means finding the time to do so! But anyway, thanks so
much for listening and commenting.

garageband lives!
I'd say it was an hour very well spent :-) it stands all on its own, also
fun to jam to...good job on the mixing...my only critique is that edgy
rock guitar in the middle seemed a little jarring (maybe too up front in
the mix?) way fun anyway

garageband lives!
John,

Thanks for stopping by and welcome to MacJams. I'm sure you'll find
much to enjoy during your stay here. As with all things, there is good
and bad on this site, but to a large extent you get out what you put in
and commenting constructively on the work of others is one of the nicer
ways to do that. Thanks for the kind words… in many ways this was just
a lark, an experiment to see what I could do in GB, but it's also become
something I'm very proud of. The mix is far from perfect because I didn't
really know what mixing involved when I first recorded this but I'm glad
that it came out as well as it did under the circumstances. One day I shall
perhaps return to it and see if I can't smooth out that rock guitar bit… I
love it but maybe it needs to be brought down just a little. Thanks again
for your input and let me know when/if you post something of your own.

Eppy

I think
you have done very well here. like with any artistic venture so much is subjective to the individual. but it appears that many others myself, did enjoy this.
and I think I read mention of what matters most, that the composers enjoys the work, I do not think creation is a race, rather its a portrayal of ourself, through an artistic venue
blah, blah, blah.... yes I can go on, and often do, but will spare you.
take care
