Sunrise at Glimmermere

Description
It seems I have made another piece for my Covenant album, like The Land. It was some time since I read anything in the series, so the title is a bit taken out of thin air, even if there seems to be a place called Glimmermere. I hope it is the lake just above Trothgard.

It started as a test of Native Instruments' Kore Player, so some of the instruments are from that, only slightly tweaked in GB. When I had listened to what I was doing for awhile I hear a lot of late 80's Tangerine Dream in it: the sounds and even some of the chord changes. Oh well, it was very much unintentional, so I guess OK. Sorry about the boring drum track, I have made a few additions and such, but perhaps not enough to make interest...

Anyway: Hope you like!

Well, it's not my usual listening fare, Henrik...
...but I like this. I've listened through twice just now, once with headphones and once with speakers, and it has a nice sort of motion to it. I like the use of the vocalish elements toward the end there, and I think the mix itself really works...

Hi Ed!
I know the feeling. Once in awhile I try some new genre here at MJ, and it sounds a lot better than I thought. Glad that happened to you here! I thank you for taking the detour, even listening twice, and leave such a kind comment.

(I might say there is something in the vocal part that still disturbs me a little when really listening to the piece - as opposed to have it going on repeat as background for work as I had today. The vocals drown or looses interest for a couple of bars or something...)

Take care.

very HD...
"Henke's Dream" I will start calling it :-) It has your signature in it (the choice of biting sawtooth synths) and the pretty fast-arpeggio ripples of TD... this is very nice, reminds me a bit of "Rockoon". It *does* hold my interest, you add little bits of spice here and there in just the right spots... I liked the choir additions, everything seemed to be "just enough" I think.

ttfn,
Drakonis

Thank you, Eduard!
Yeah, well, might as well spell it out: I am Edgar Froese ;-) Eh, or maybe not...

You're probably right about Rockoon. I only have those albums on old cassette tapes so I haven't pinned the actual song I was thinking of down yet.

I am flattered this holds so well to the dragon's ears. I was a little rushed with posting because I started work today after five weeks of vacation. Doesn't seem to be a lot of tweaking tips for me on this one so far, though ;-)

Hope you are enjoying your own well deserved freedom at the moment!

Take care.

Hehe
Well, they have made a lot of noise over the last 40 years and contributed to some of the presets in various music software (or so I've heard) so I might even be right ;-) Anyway, thanks for the comment, means a lot coming from you. Take care.

Tangerine or not
this is a good mix. Cool synth work
and solid production.

Well done - thanks !

Tangerine
About the song art: I couldn't find a fiting picture from the world of Thomas Covenant (by Stephen R Donaldson) so I chose one of my own photos which happened to be taken in the middle of the day. I had to add a bit of "tangerine" to it to at least make it look a little like a sunrise... Fake, fake, sigh...

Most of the sounds are thank to the Kore player. All of the blippety ones are from there, adds a bit of motion to the piece I think. Thank you for listening and commenting! Much appreciated.

Hi Henke.....
This is an excellent mix. A very enjoyable journey, through headphones or open speakers.

The choir parts made the piece extra special. I will be playing this many more times.

TD take over the world slowly, starting with artists at Macjams......Not entirely a bad thing as far as I am concerned!!

Take care.

Thanks, Paul!
You mention both speakers and headphones, and I am happy it works OK both ways, because I have been mixing almost entirely with headphones. I think maybe that's why the voices in the second half sometimes disappears a little in the mix, not quite intentional...

Also you, and others, mention the choir as some kind of special treat. I had some problems with them. Some of the guys only wanted to sing about some Tim or other! I had to mute them for quite a few bars, but they kind of mutinied and got their way at the very end, with a slightly improved sound I might add, thanks to extra reverb and stuff. Like most midi singers they can be a bit tricky to handle but rewarding when they follow you whistle...

Thanks again for your nice comment and for repetitive plays. Actually it works rather well on repeat while working with other stuff...

You take care too!

Delicious
I think the nordic people write such good music as you never loose sight of your roots and are not afraid to use them. That desire to tell a story through sound, whether it be verbally or musically shines through. hints of the far north about the choral sounds.

Yummie!
I must have made an impression on those South African Singers! Well, the base instrument was called that, but admittedly I had them learn some Scandinavian style to fit my piece ;-) Anyway, glad you like this. Thanks for the comment.

Take care.

wonderful Henrik, love the sounds you chose and the way you placed them as though we're stepping out of the mysterious and into a beautiful land of tinkling rivers and countryside.Choir sits nicely in this too. Really nice listening, regards M

Nothing about this song is boring. This is great! I used to love Tangerine Dream and I do hear some resemblance here. Wonderful job. Thanks for sharing with us.

Used to...
Yeah well, I guess that is part of the problem. They WERE at their best in the 70's, maybe early 80's. With that said I should also say I haven't heard a lot of their music from later years...

Anyway, I am thrilled you liked this! Also see the P.S. in my reply to Karen...

Take care.

Oh yes TD
I have every one of their studio and live releases and even a couple of Edgar's solo projects plus I've seen them Live twice. So I would know I suppose. Anyway... I like it! Yes the chorals work really well.

BTW you can only claim to be Edgar if you play some guitar on them... so there! Hee hee.

Lovely stuff right up my street.

Ouch, you got me there!
You are quite right of course (even if I think even you would find it diffucult to find a guitar on, say the Stuntman solo album..!) However, a sweet guitar for a final section of the song might not be totally wrong? Maybe Reggie_Pole could have a go at it.

Glad you liked the chorals too. I think I'll have them front a little better in the next mix, though.

Thanks for listening and commenting! Much appreciated!

Hi Dan!
Glad you liked this one. TD's official site is here. They have been around since the late 60's, so there is a week or two of music to listen to all in all, I guess ;-)

I have been over to listen to some of your pieces. Enjoyed them a lot!

Take care.

Cool song
I've read the books, and this theme is appropriately titled. The angelic chorus and low thrum at the begining evoke the earthpower for which Glimmermere is known. The books need to become a Peter Jackson epic I think ... Maybe you could score the film.

Henke said 3487 days ago (August 8th, 2009)
Great comment!
I read them (only first trilogy so far) in Swedish, so names etc are a bit different and therefore confusing - as of course is mych in these books. Very interesting and in some way good, though. Glad the title was appropriate anyway!

It would be very interesting to see the movie based on these books, and why not Jackson?! My daughter has just been rewatching Lord of the Rings this week, and they ARE good, even if details always can be discussed.

So thank you very much! I see you are fairly new at MacJams, so I welcome you! Planning to post anything yourself? Remember that the first post usually take some time before it is accepted.

Take care.

There is a lot of cool stuff going on here in this tune. I like many of the different instruments you use. The choir at the end adds an interesting touch. I would agree that the drum track is the weak link for this piece. I don't think the beat itself is bad at all - you might consider augmenting it with additional percussive beats and rhythms, coming and going in a similar fashion as some of the other instruments in your work. That aside, this is interesting to listen to and well done. I appreciate the share.

Regards,
Sigmund

Hi Sigmund
Thank you for this comment. You help/push me to have another go at those drums. I did put in some very few extra beats, but I totally agree it needs more! I have a few other ideas for change as well, so I'll definitely have another go at it soon.

I had to go listening to some of your stuff, which apparantly I have not done before. A great pity because you do some wonderful stuff! See you around!

I prefer this to TDream
I really like it , and to be honest I would play it over Tangerine Dream anyday.
I think you were hitting on some very interesting stuff in around 3:30 to the end.
I would take that 30 secs or so and use it as a sample with another drum beat behind it. But I like your drum sounds , they are soft and tonaly they work for me . Just downloaded it thanks . BTW would a gps find Glimmermere.

Oops, sorry
for the late answer to your very kind comment. I guess I was too flattered to get a decent reply in words at the time. But thank you! I did use those voices in a couple of songs this summer and maybe they will come back yet again. I kind of like them and think I have still to make them proud of the music I use them for... As for gps, I'm quite certain that is not in use in "the Land", at least not in the first trilogy ;-)

Thanks again, and take care.
