Once Upon a Time in the West - Final Showdown

 Genre: Film Scoring

I intend to play this tune by Ennio Morricone with a live band. So I analyzed it and put all parts in Logic, always a nice way to get a grip onto a song. As a byproduct I got this recording which kind of surprised me, soundwise. So I decided to put I out on MacJams - my first cover on MacJams :-)

Strictly speaking
you shouldn't have any covers on MJ, of course. But hopefully you know what you are doing. Musically you sure are! Really sweet tune well played and mixed! Take care.

Now on Youtube
Well quite honestly I didn't think of the fact that MacJams is not intended for covers. On the other hand, the only claims I'll make about this recording is to have analyzed and played it myself, and having learned a lot from one great old master by doing so. I hope this will do...

Meanwhile I posted a video featuring this very same recording on Youtube, the place where no one seems to be concerned about copyright whatsoever. In case you're interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2tuGrhsfQE

Nice version
I really like that clean almost Jan Ackerman style sound you get from your guitar. String background was smoothly done, too.

Jan Akkerman
Funny you mention Jan Akkerman (who's also from my country - or maybe it's the other way around as he is older than I am). Lately, I've been studying this masterpiece of his, Sylvia, which he played with his band Focus way back in the seventies. Maybe it influenced my sound :-)
I always admired Jan and I've seen him on stage quite a few times. I see you are from the UK, you must have some opportunities to see him as he is touring the UK frequently.

ukelele orchestra
You're not gonna tell me there's such a thing as a bass ukelele, are you? And even a dobro type of ukelele. No way man, these folks really rock! Morricone's music comes out perfectly the way they play it.

I don't quite get your question about Logic. I use Logic Pro 7.2.3 if that's what you mean.

Cool beans!
This is a good rendition of that theme. I tried my hand at a modern Western theme with my film score "Spaghetti Sunrise". Very different from this masterpiece though. Did you map this on to standard Logic instruments or is it a special third party library?

Logic instruments
I have Logic 7.2.3 and I used standard ESXS24 samples only:
- Blues Harp (Factory > 06 Ethnic Instruments > Blues Harp)
- Violin Pizzicato (Factory > 04 Strings > Violin (Pizzicato))
- String Ensemble(Factory > 04 Strings > String Ensemble)
- Fingerstyle Electric Bass (Factory > 03 Bass > Fingerstyle Electric Bass)
- Dry Standard drumkit (Factory > 08 Drums > Dry Standard Kit)

As a matter of fact I don't have any third party libraries. I do have some older hardware synths which are basically sample players. But I used none of them on this track.
