Devil's in the details

Another one in my "Father and Son" collection. My father wrote this poem which I used (with very few changes) as the lyrics to this song. I love the lyrics. They make me think of his (Charlie Stone) wit which was never ending. He didn't start writing poetry until late in life (in his 70's). He was very prolific. I've written dozens of songs based on his words and will be happy to share them.

Where did the Devil go?

I think I know where the devil goes when they say he isn't here.
Just check your paper everyday, the Devil's there, I fear.

There in the details of the news you read
You'll find an interesting fact.
Satan's found a hiding place
and he's doing his diabolical act!

He's behind the political rhetoric
Polarizing left and right
He's happily doing his best to create
Considerably more heat than light.

He's backing the thought to deny civil rights
to others who exhibit a difference.
With fashionable passion he hasten to chasten
those making it a morale offense.

I think I know where the devil goes when they say he isn't here.
Just check your paper everyday, the Devil's there, I fear.

He is between all the lines of the news accounts
that misrepresent the war.
He takes a measure of pleasure in an eye for an eye
in an effort to even the score.

The Devil is well and alive you see.
Using a trick he learned from below.
He simply keeps up a low profile.
The Devil's in the details you know!

Devil Runs
Such a knack for the melody you have Steve. Digging this real hard, the bass line might need a little boost in the mix? Could be my ears...

You are making me
think I need to do a father son thing... I did a few folk tunes for him years ago but maybe I should write a set to reflect on him now that he is long gone.

Excellent work Steve!

More fascinating arranging and strong writing
Reminds me of David Cosby's rock style (both lyrics, vocal phrasings and syncopations), with a Wakeman collab thrown in. There was a disconnect in my ears on this one, tho, and I can't figure out if its the choice of sounds, the mix, me, or the notes themselves. Its like several aspects of the song are coming from different places, don't hold together - when you are singing the verses. So I listened 3 times to the track until it cohered better. Maybe I'm put off by the amount of distortion (fuzz) that seems to collect, the weight it put inside my head. I think my ears are burning out and it has nothing to do with the song. The only change I'd make is adding more low end to the EQ, and maybe using a synth pad with am EQ field that doesn't saturate the hi mids. But I truly dig the writing and arranging. Sorry for my struggles here. Maybe its just hi mid burn out in my head... time to rest my ears before listening a 4th time.
