Cats and Dogs (w Drew Kopr, KTB, ziti, Bill Birney)

Get Flash to see this player.

Basses: Drew Kopr (Andrew Koplan)
Guitars: ziti (Fran Dagostino)
Keyboards: KTB (John Libby)
Horn keys: Bill Birney
Arrangement and production: perceptualvortex (David Thomas)

This song began many months ago, when Drew sent me some killer bass to work with. I solicited the help of two of my favorite 'Jammers, ziti and KTB, and my co-worker Bill. Recordings of great playing came pouring back, and I had an absolute glut of cool keyboards and guitars to mix in. In fact, making room for all of the coolness was probably impossible, but I tried. The result is a bit of a whirlwind, but even after a coupla zillion listens while mixing, this tune hasn't even begun to get old to my ears.

Drew, this was a total blast, thank you for getting it started. And thanks Bill, John and Fran for kicking in your great playings.

The art is a photoshopped excerpt from a reproduction of a painting originally made for a Marvin Gaye album. It was hanging behind my co-worker Billy's desk, and it looked like this song sounds.

Controlled musical chaos, harnessed into a funky exhibition.

Cats and dogs... living together... real Old Testament stuff! ;)

Nicely done by all.

that picture sums it up nicely :-) Dave, super job harnessing all the trax. Hearing this plugged in is a real treat. I can't think of better "get better soon" track for Drew and his fret hand.

Bill struts a mean horn assemble on the keys. They are as large and as bold as anything I've heard from a keyboard. I think Fran's tracks in particular must have been a hoot to mesh in. Lots of cool snippets in there.

Thx to you & Drew for getting this going, and the invite.

what a thing!!
i have begun to take for granted this great gift of being able to collaborate on projects such as this. But listening back to what dave did with the tracks i sent, all cleverly mixed together with stuff i never heard...it gave me the old fashion rush! How cool is this??...although my dubious intonation on slide guitar is pretty evident...this is a great track PEEEVEEE has put out. His joy in mixing and mastering is so evident when i hear the finished product.

thanks for the thrill there dave!!!
and get better mr drew

Reminds me of Little Feat, one of my favorite bands, greasy southern funky soul, that I can totally groove on. The horns are really nice, Memphis Horns sort of, and the keys have that Bill Payne sort of roll to them, especially when the synth part comes in. Not much more needs be said about ziti's guitar beyond that he's got me convinced he's channelled Lowell George in that slide solo. You're right, it's a total blast!
And it wouldn't be a Jim Bouchard comment without a nit: I love the drums but the snare hits are a little too hammerin' for me. I kept feeling like it would be nice to break into more of a shuffle feel at times to bring some definition to the different sections. But that's a very small nit and there's so much going on that perhaps it's just as well that the drums stays on the same groove throughout to keep it from getting the the point of chaos. I'm going to have to download this, that much is for sure!

Cats and Dogs
oh man - what FUN!!! love the keyboard work in here (way to go John), and of course fran's guitars fill the room with his magic. The horns sing, the basses hold it all together, and TERRIFIC arrangement and production PV! Totally fun listen - thank you!

That is the PERFECT artwork...
...for this bit of electrofunkness...

THIS is what I originally loved about MacJams... just this sort of exciting collab, this unusual mixing of elements...

Man, and, ahem, that is a hot mix....

Great bass playing... I love the drums... Fran's playing is terrific, and then there's ol' Ultra-Glue himself, ktb....

A fellow can get jealous....

Praise and adulation and like that....

Great all round...
...playing, production and groove are all in sync. Wonderfully put together, sounds like Earth Wind & Fire are missing a vocalist.

Very pro in all departments. Nice one fellas! Definite DL!

Energy galore
I see what you mean about the whirlwind... it is filled to the brim with energy, but everything fits, and it somehow doesn't sound close to be saturated with sound at any point... very clean. Great stuff here, and my admiration to all who were involved in this collab!
