Blue For You

Description
Well, I always wanted to play the blues. I love the old blues players and my favorite modern player is Johnny Winter. I just can't seem to grasp the genre as an artist though, probably mostly because all my troubles seem somehow outside myself (with the exception of the extraordinary burden we all bear of being oneself). So this is a tongue in cheek blues, not meant to offend real practitioners. I laid down a rhythm section using Magic Garage Band and then used my Son-in-law's old Rickenbacker 325 guitar to lay down some riffs. I sang some sufficiently satirical lyrics to make the point that I just don't "get" the blues. I have to say I enjoyed playing this as I searched my memory for blues phrases that found there way out here.

Lyrics
Blue For You

You know I try so hard
But I just can't seem to get those blues.
You know I try so very hard
But I just can't seem to get those blues.
Cause you know just about the time I get low down, low and lonesome
My rich old lady comes around and pays my dues.

the blues
right off reminds me of early Led Zep - could've come right off LZ1. Solid performance on guitar - may have been toungue in cheek, but I thought you did a great job! Thanks for sharing this - Sig.

Ha!
Another day, another genre. After reading your description I expected one thing and was duly surprised and impressed by the actual quality of this track - and I mean on every level.
Strangely it does remind very much of this one Led Zeppelin song (ask me 15 years ago and I'll remember the lyrics even...).
Put a big smile on my face.

Well, Stephen, I think you grasp it very well, even though you can't relate to being in total and pure pain like some blues guys live in. Your blues guitar wail is excellent, and your vocals... perfect for this tongue in cheek song.

Happiness
is a tough row to hoe when you want to sing the blues. Been there. Haha. What a surprise. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, but this is terrific. You've captured it with your vocal performance.

claiming absent the feeling of the mode, you seem to have a pretty good handle on being able to fake it, alright. Some really great chops on this, though in playing the blues, sometimes less can be more. Using some sustain while messaging the note to intensify some feeling or sentiment. Traditionally the blues vox was calloused from consuming fast quantities of whisky while smoking in the back room. This produced that vocal growl that was an emphasis on certain parts of the hard hearted down past the souls of their shoes, my baby done left me flat, informal gut feeling. Your doing alright, in that your doing it. I get the feeling the next one will be even better.

Man, your to the steps on this style. How about another.....

Holy crap Steven!
I didn't know you could play like this! AWESOME riffin' dude.

I'm also a long-standing Johnny Winter fan. I regard SECOND WINTER as one of the best blues-rock albums of all time.

Anyway, this is a most excellent offering my friend. MOST EXCELLENT indeed!

Be well!

HEE HEE!
You notice there is only one verse. That is where those vocals came from . . . and went. You can do anything once, for a short time, with a little practice. Then you have to gargle and not talk for a week.

not a big blues fan
but this rocks. it's a really clean and rich mix. you can hear everything so clearly. it's all attached to everything else...but at the same time a perfect discrete entity. top vocals too....and really confident lyrcis that make it an easy ride.

You can certainly play the blues...I'm glad you don't "get" them though. What a fabulous listen this was Stephen, you rocked the house!!

un-ironic blues guitar
for someone who disclaims a grasp of the blues, the lead guitar here sounds just right! And the vocals--whoa. I think your modesty is excessive here--I think your authenticity overwhelmed your irony:)

Chinese Opera, Texas Blues... afro/world... what can't you do, and do well? I'll find out as I continue to follow you.

I miss Johnny, too; saw him live almost 30 years ago, blew my mind; never did recover the thing.

seems to be a lot of anti goin' round
anti-blues at its best. color me impressed. again. very sweet work here, excellent singing and lyrics, finger-lickin' good. I am sure there are few genres you cannot tackle, although my daughter suggests that you may have a tough time with her latest fave genre, Viking Folk Metal (huh?)

Blue for you
Loved it. And weird that we have a song of the same name!
I especially like the tone of the 325 - for a guitar that screams John Lennon when you look at it.... it sounds a million miles away the way you play it (in a good way) Quality work!

Well, this is certainly different from the last couple of tracks I have heard of yours, but very enjoyable and well played! Also, very funny lyrics; great job! I am still chuckling over the "I just can't seem to lose" line. Brilliant!

Clark,
Yes, this is not really in my wheelhouse, but I am pleased with how it turned out. I am all over the map, musically. I can still hear my mother's voice telling me "A jack of all trades is a master of none". I cannot seem to ever settle myself on one musical style or interest.
