Standing by the side of the road
Impervious to your scorn
Standing by the side of the road
I’ll soon be heading home

As the fox slips under the wheel

It’s dying time for Reynardine
He’s one more road kill victim
He’ll hunt no more along the verge
Into the dark he’s slipped in

As the fox slips under the wheel

Two wide brown eyes stare in frozen surprise
Just one last second to live
The fear is spread across his face
He had a little more life to giver

As the fox slips under the wheel

Drive on past
As the awful thud
Shocks me to the core
Happened so fast
No time to change
My heart sinks to the floor

It’s dying time for Reynardine
I hope he goes to pure fox heaven
Thought I heard the sound of the hunting ground
Your brothers are waiting for you

As the Fox slips under the wheel

The startled cry as the lapwing fly’s
Over the road below
Dusk is falling fox brothers calling
No return from where you must go

dude this is good
great lyrics....especially victim rhyming with slipped in. lovely percussion halfway through. why is it called lapwing...would you have called it fox if you'd run a lapwing over? lapwing's get far too much publicity anyway. cool song. and i'm not going to forget to mention that nice tambourine slap. a perfect percussive polemic

One day coming home from skiing 10,000 prairie dogs decided to cross the 4 lane highway as we were all going about 40+mph... No way to stop and the thump thump thump just makes you sick..

Cool tune!

- forsooth 'tis Tull-like indeed, straight from the Minstrel in the Gallery period which was a lovely time in their history. Very enjoyable track. Should have lots more comments than it has and a much higher rating. I don't normally give ratings as I am no expert but on this occasion I shall break the habit. Thanks for posting this.

back for more...after hearing 'fragile man' that you just sent me. this has to be the only song ever written about running a fox over....and with the weird title 'lapwing'. love the percussion, the tambourine...the fills...love it all...one of the first tunes i heard here....and one of my all time faves. i can't believe it hasn't had more exposure.

Hi Steve and Mark. Julian directed people to this song in Chat. Trying to think what I was doing 831 days ago.... wasn't a MJ member then. Good song. Is the title some type of Buddhist thing - fox gets reborn as bird? :-)
Like the lyrics and the guitar riff. Regards, Peter.
