They're souls have been unlocked, can you see them dancing - some in celebration, some a little apprehensive. This is one I worked on a while ago and I've come to a stopping point with it, not sure where to go. The end could certainly use a little more creativity. Looking for any and all feedback from the talented folks here. Thanks so much!

this is pretty cool. it has an slightly spooky feel to it.

i read your description as i listened, and my first thought about the ending (before i heard it yet) was that you could repeat the opening theme as an ending - but that's exactly what you did! i think that's good.

perhaps the fade out could be replaced by a cadence. one approach would be to use a VI-V-I chord progression. that would be very effective here since the song mostly stays on one chord (I). You could do it by changing the bass notes from the fast repeating C C D G to slower, longer notes that play C F G C and end it with the melody going from the last D down to C (or possibly Eb to leave it a little unsettled).

tons of info here (maybe too much!):

How wonderful
for you to take the time to give me such a detailed breakdown, thank you Smokey! I'm going to try this cadence trick you've suggested - thanks for the wiki link too! I'm going check it out momentarily.
drakonis said 3573 days ago (December 5th, 2009)
Excellent work here...
And yes, this could probably do with a little tweak on the ending (SmokeyVW's covered that perfectly), but other than that it is sounding quite good. There's one spot where everything goes quiet for a split-second that was disconcerting (at 1:33), you can probably extend one or two instruments across that gap to cover it up... in fact, you may want to OPEN that gap a little and let a couple instruments hold notes across a 2 second gap before picking back up again, to break things up a little. I recognize some of these as having started life as GB loops, but I want to tell you that you did an awesome job of molding and bending them and mixing them with other things to make a unique cohesive piece. It is compelling and interesting. I really love the mostly-minor with little hints of major-peeking-through. Very cool.

Thank you!
I see what you mean about that small break at 1:33, thank you for pointing that out, I didn't even notice it before. I think I've listened too many times and my ears have become numb to a some to hearing some of the details.

I appreciate your words of encouragement...thanks a million Drak!

you are so kind!! It makes me smile to hear you say that, thank you so much!! I think I've learned quite a bit during my stay here at MJ - every bit of feedback helps me learn. Thank you again...
DeputyDoofy said 3572 days ago (December 5th, 2009)
Very well done!
I really like this a lot. Not sure I have advice for the fade. I'd probably do a fade as well, but I'd drag the ending out further. Slowly remove layers, then finally take the 1 or 2 remaining layers and do a slow fade.

TracyVosh said 3572 days ago (December 6th, 2009)
Thanks D!
You're right, it needs to be drawn out some more and more subtly. I try not to do too many fades but sometimes the piece just calls for it, ya know? I couldn't figure out what else to do with it. It's most appreciated, thank you!
Moviz said 3572 days ago (December 6th, 2009)
As far as
I'm concerned there's nothing that this needs.... it's a lovely piece with a little mystery and danger added to it, though I leave it to more experienced people to give you advice... I just love it, regards M

fabulous comment, Moviz...thank you so much!! I'm so glad that you like it.
sschedra said 3571 days ago (December 7th, 2009)
First off, good job. I have gotten to the same point with many of my orchestral themes. I just can't resolve them or move them forward. In this piece, I think the suggestion is in the very music toward the ending. It gets quiet and there is some choir chords that seem to suggest that the theme might move into a major key. It could even resolve there. I think you have done an excellent job here.

Awesome words
Thank you sschedra! Would that be called "music block"? lol. I think I get you're saying, it feels like it's going to move into a new section and sort of does, but doesn't. I'm going to back to work out that ending piece.
tokai said 3570 days ago (December 8th, 2009)
stuff. Hats off to you, this is a complete work to me, haunting melody. 4.30 mark, love that brake down. Just how did you put this together?
Whatever and however, it is well made and an interesting listen.

TracyVosh said 3569 days ago (December 8th, 2009)
You don't know how great that makes me feel to hear you say that! Honestly, I'm not sure how I put any of these tracks together - I just start piecing sounds together, adding layers, stretching, twisting and deleting, in hopes that it turns into a decent piece. Sometimes though, it turns into one big frustration - I so wish I knew more about notes and music form. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Gaylen75 said 3569 days ago (December 8th, 2009)
I like this a lot. I this the melodies are powerful and really shine in this. I would love to hear an accompany piano piece to show the melodies simply. But then again I dont have the talent to do any of this. I just like what I hear.

Thank you
Gaylen! It's great to hear different people's perceptions of what they hear when they listen to music. I wouldn't mind hearing your suggestion either but I, unfortunately have no talent playing piano either. Thank you for great comment...

Intense and spooky. Your production is very nicely done. I particularly like the way the song moved into the quiet part around 2:00 or so then gradually incresed the intensity again until the end.

Very well done.

Feel to this and I can picture the title "Animated Dolls" being portrayed in a Tim Burton kind of way.

Einarus said 3511 days ago (February 5th, 2010)
I agree with Z293 about the Tim Burton connection - I thought this sounded a bit Danny Elfmanish.

This is a quite vivid composition and flows pretty well throughout, except the weird silence at the 1:33 mark that Drakonis mentioned.

I also agree with Smokey about the cadence.

Hmm... it seems I don't have much to say that hasn't been said before...
Anyway - I like this.

I feel kind of silly, I'm not sure who Danny Elfman is but I assure you that I will in about 10 seconds. I'm curious now. I appreciate you dropping in Einarus, and taking the time. I'll have to come check out some of yours for sure.

A quietly dramatic piece, beautifully done. The inclusion of the flute is inspirational giving the story an optimistic feel.

Chucky and company?
This is definitely not the toy soldiers on parade, these dolls are animated in a more sinister way.

Good piece.

Great song title Tracy! This is really moving. I like it a lot especially the percussion. Great job! I can definitely picture this being the background to some moving imagery! My only suggestion as others have pointed out is the ending, it just needs a bit more energy or something. Keep up the great work!

I'm not so qualified to comment your song ,I will not talk about technical . Would it be ok if I only say I like this composition for the energy its tittle suggest and 'cause is performed very well only thing, I prefer the end to be nice and clear. Keep up the good work.

Hi Tracy.....
This is very cinematic-sounding. Another treat both of content and production. Plenty of atmosphere in here so the instruments can all breathe in the mix.

Take care.
