Psycho A Go Go (Remix)

Description
The original mix on this song was horrible. I had the levels so high that there was tons of compression and lots of drop out with the instruments, etc. I spent a few hours fixing the mix problems and bringing the levels down a ton. I'm not getting dropout nearly as bad as before. I also am equalizing the vocals a little different. Please let me know if they are horrible or what I need to do to improve them.

Anyway I like this song a lot. It was painful to listen to with the mix so horrible. I still have a long way to go in my mixing skills but I'm learning the hard way that the mix is just as important as the song writing and recording to the success off the song.

If there are any gripes with the way this song is mixed now let me know. It's the only way that I'll figure out how to improve.

Thanks

Lyrics
Psycho A Go Go

I talk to people that aren’t even there
If you told me different I’d surely swear
That this guy is here and he’s totally real
He’s a person I can talk to or even feel
Seroquel, Geodon what the hell am I on
I can’t even think ‘cause I’m totally gone
Head to the side and drool from my lips
I walk with a shuffle and I’m easy to tip yeah

Psycho a go go I don’t even know
Where I am or even who I know
So many voices are in my head
Telling me to do things that I’ll dread

Psycho a go go
Psycho a go go
Psycho a go go
Psycho a go go

The straight jacket can keep me warm
In a padded cell so I can do no harm
Electroshock is so very fun
It jolts me just like a bullet from a gun
So many voices are in my head
Telling to do things I’d surely dread
They’re never quiet and won’t ever stop
Unless I’m drugged up to the point where I drop yeah

The doctor says that I’m getting better now
That all the chemicals are working some how
I don’t get how he can make this claim
Because inside I feel just the same
I wish that they could tell me what the hecks going wrong
But in the meantime my mind is totally gone
So if you please wipe the spit from my face
Then lock me up and call me a total waste yeah

KICK AXE, Hannibal!
Nice! I'll be critical since you asked. Your voice is fine but sounds like you intend some tongue-in-cheek delivery. If not, it could use more energy (When that happens to me I first try some O.D. or amp-sim "drive." Your guitars are GREAT -- Serious axe wielding -- especially in that super-cool proggy section with the bass+ drums all going at it. Definitely kicks ass. I love your guitars, and can't help wanting to bring them up a few dbs. I like the dry mix. The bass line seems like it could use a good 4to 6 db boost in the 30 to 200 Hz section.

Thanks for the info B6s
Where do I get O.D. or amp- sim "drive"? I have a presonus tube drive for vocals but I'm not sure if that's the same thing. Sorry, but I'm a retard to all of this. Thanks for the bass mixing info too. I'll definitely pick that up in my bass mix niext time.

Your Interface/Pre's have gain, right?
I used to have PreSonus TubePre's ... you can add gain right on them, probably 10X better than what I do in GarageBand. (GB has some basic distortion, overdrive & amp simulation... used that kind of thing on my latest "Devil" tune and also the latter half of my tune "Why You." I need to be careful giving "advice!"

I hear ya
on the mix part, I always have the same problem, I dont know why but this reminds me of some older Alice Cooper. LOve the drum arrangement on this. Lets all go psycho. love the bass guitar part at 4:20.

cool
heavy song. Really enjoy when the bass and guitars go for a ride together.
Think the clean part of the solo could use something to ease it into the mix a bit better (reverb maybe), but the second part sits great and sound so good.

Nice work

Mix???
Sounds good to me Mike.... but I HATE mixing... i know what i want, but dont know how to get it, so it takes me a lot of trial and error. Anyway, i frickin' love this - drums and guitars are great, its wel structured, and its e-e-e-evil.

the TONE
Eddie,
The tone on this is sick. Immediately struck by it. Full and rich with just the right amount of rip. The fat bass has a great high end but does, as Bob6stringer points out, need some deep EQ in the 80mhz range. The arpeggio break is very metal, nice. Plus the drums stereo pan on the roll is ace, they may need a little reverb to add some room presence that would make them more credible. Greta lead descent at 5:20. Cool.

Thanks racerat
for the listen and the advice. I'm picking up a new bass preamp that should make it totally kicking. I'll have to reverb the drums a bit higher. Listening again, they still do sound a bit too dry.

bud said 3060 days ago (January 2nd, 2010)
The music mix sounds pretty damn good
I'd double the vocal track - or triple it with different eq's and play with subtle effects too - maybe one slightly distorted etc. then blend them to something you like - with more depth. They definitely sound different in the middle break than during the verses. Just my opinion.
Great song by the way.

psycho
mix sounds fine to me (but then what would i know). the vocals are playing catch up too much (especially in verse one). easily rectified; practise...or re-jig - when lyrics don't sit properly in a song then the song really suffers. everything else was well constructed and performed. sort the vocal and dude it will rock.

for the listen. I did have too many syllables in my lyrics... especially in the first verse. I'm pretty lazy about changing certain things. But thanks for pointing that out. I'll definitely be more conscious of that in the future for sure.

Your song Picture a Place was very good!

Great tone on the guitars, the sounds are blending well. Vocs are sounding good, but maybe need to come up some. Creative lyrics, good topic for a metal song.

cool intro
i liked the music - thought it was pretty solid.
i wanted that left ear guitar up a little bit more.
that section at 1:24 was pretty neat!
you had some very interesting tonal relationships happening in the solo on the way out. you may be psycho gone, but this is NOT a horrible mix. i enjoyed my listen,
anne

Concepts

This mix is a clear improvement over the first version you posted here. That's part of the magic of belonging to Macjams - the community support helps us improve on our musical and production skills.

Your guitar-slinging skills are apparent. And you create some great spaces in your soundtracks. I like your voice and your singing, too, but it sounds to me like you come in on some of the lines a fraction too late (especially here on the all-important first verse).

With a line like "So many voices are in my head," I kind of expected to hear multiple voices singing it.

What you seem to be really good at (besides the guitar) is conceptualizing songs. You write them from interesting points of view (besides this one, the sniper song immediately comes to mind). That's no small thing when it comes to songwriting. Making the music sound as good as we imagine it in our heads - that's the hard part : )

It's pretty obvious you are enjoying a renaissance in music making .. and you have found a good place to develop songs here at Macjams. I see good things flowing out of you in the months ahead!

Thanks Warren
for the listen and for taking the time to give some really good pointers. I notice that I have been a bit late coming i on my verses. The lattest work that I've been doing I've made more of an effort at the timeliness of my singing.

Thanks for the kind words as well. It means a lot.

Speaking of well written songs. Your Hey Alligator is a classic. What great work!

Much
improved mix. Like everything about the tune. Very cool bassline again. Good work. A bit of swing entering the song at the "psycho a gogo" parts would be cool. Keep up the good work.

great title, I think the song itself is good, the problem with your vocals is that your lyrics don't always match the meter of the song

seroquel, geodon what the hell am i on
first off, the title of your song is awesome. The lyrics are really catchy. The song has great dynamics too. I love the bass. The whole piece just progresses real nicely, the riffs are prime. This song might be my favorite fast eddie song. Also, the blues part at the 4minute mark is so awesome and you finish the song off with beautifully executed lead work
