TV John Langworthy is a local Washington, D.C. eccentric. I met him when he was the booker for a miserable Tex-Mex restaurant and live music venue and he was kind enough to hire me a couple of times to play for two or three sullen tables of customers, back in the early 1990s when I was too young to know better. He's noteworthy for other reasons as well: he had a mid-life awakening where he realized he was a divinely-inspired songwriter, and since then hundreds of songs have come to him in dreams, as if from a higher power. He actually has his own wikipedia entry as well, I recently discovered.

I had totally forgotten about him, but a few weeks ago I heard a local musician mention that he was going to appear on TV John's cable show the next week. Hence this song. Also: for some reason, this song cites not one but several 60s folk-rock classics in the lyrics. Don't ask me why.

Welcome to the New Age

TV John, you're still around...
I had assumed that you left town, or you went crazy
But here you are, all set to blow
On your public access show
I must be crazy

TV John, you had your groove
Your dreams would make you move
(oh oh, oh oh)

Turn the channel (come on John, come on John)
Turn the page (come on John, come on John)
Wrap yourself in flannel (come on John, come on John)
Welcome to the new age

TV John, you had your time...
You'd throw the bums a dime, cause they were lazy
But here you are, all set to sing
And you haven't got a thing
You're getting lazy

TV John, you did your best
But your dreams disturbed your rest

TV John, I wish you well
But your dreams, they cast a spell

Nice pop feel
This TV John guy sounds like quite a character. Your production is solid here, and the soloing really wails. Catchy and memorable melody with a fun kind of bounce to the song. Nice post!

Welcome to the New Age
Nice uptempo, bouncy tune, with some interesting rhythmic variations. Great guitar work here, and your vocs sound good as usual. I think I picked up a couple of the references: "turn the page" ("Turn The Page", Bob Seger), and "throw the bums a dime"
("Like A Rolling Stone", Bob Dylan), but what are the rest of them?

Gee Michael ...
.. you have that effortless power pop sensibility of the likes of Jason Faulkner or Michael Penn. Terrific rhythmic pop tune and dude you pull of the spoken lyrics so well. The guitar refrain behind the verses really pulls it all together, great tones. A true gem.

Ben Folds
I am a huge fan of yours and this reflects one of my favorites Ben Folds/ Ben Folds Five. This has a different and creative take on what you already do so well.

Great stuff full of life! I love the fuzz. Excellent words and an original theme as always. This blows away the winter blues! Thank you.

i love it when you get that creative sugar rush - like that car tune - this is GREAT. the vocoder backups, slinging that zz top guitar around, the micheal penn (paddy's right) piano, the pat methaney sitting in with sonic youth lead (is that a guitar or a synth? or are you playing midi via your guitar, what IS that?) Just a great, spastic tune. Tons of fun, and now on my ipod for my twice weekly walks from the farragut metro stop to my office on M street. and i've never heard of TV John, so thanks for the bit of D.C. pop trivia.
