Fado

[Explicit]

Description
My very personal take on a Fado (a songstyle originating in Portugal - look up the word in Wikipedia or just google it). I created a musical introduction but, after that, it's strictly a cappella. The themes are difficult to hear discussed at times so I've listed it as being 'explicit' for concepts rather than unacceptable language. There will eventually be another version which is to music being written for the song by a musician friend in Portugal.

Lyrics
At 4, my handsome father
Made me promise him
To be his wife

Through the sharpening of age
And knowledge
I know now that it was a wrongful life

To my father, there was no mistake
No sacrifice too great for me to make
He was never there to see my spirit break
But my heart and innocence were always his to take

At 12, my lovely mother
Made me promise her
To be her slave

Through the toughening of some
Experience
I know that it was wrong the things I gave

To my mother, there was no mistake
No sacrifice too great for me to make
She was never there to see my spirit break
But my heart and innocence were always hers to take

At 17, I gave my daughter
To people I had never even met
I was so young

Through the hardening of time
And remembrance
I know now what it was that I have done

To my parents, there was no mistake
No sacrifice too great for me to make
They were never there to see my spirit break
But my trust and love were always theirs to take

My life is now a construct which I have made
I promised myself
Freedom from the past

And through the blossoming of age
And knowledge
I have more than I ever could have asked

To my husband, there is no mistake
No sacrifice too great for him to make
To create for my spirit a living shell
Which no one, even he, could ever break

Wow!
I was not expecting such vocal dynamics and powerful lyrics as my first listen today. The musical intro is delicious. The a capella recording captures every nuance of your performance and provides no instrumentation to hide behind: this is all you, and well done. Brava!

Oof!
Talk about tough subjects, excellent lyrics, and your usual amazingly emotive singing, really gorgeous melody line... tantalizing intro... I would LOVE to hear this filled with soft backing throughout.

fado
how incredibly powerful. i understand this was not written to be an a capella piece - and i can't wait to hear it filled out with music - but hearing it this way is quite an experience. The full force of your powerful voice in all its honesty, courage and beauty. the melody itself is beautiful, slightly reminiscent of "Nature Boy" (in a good way!). I'm hoping the accompanying music supports this instead of over-powering it. Excellent - thank you for sharing this.

Thanks for your wonderful comments!
Richard13, I appreciate what you've said very much. And, Drakonis, I know what you mean - can't wait to hear what Ziur does with this - I'm really excited to sing this with music! Kassia, yes, I take that as a compliment (love Nature Boy!) - thanks for your kindness. Jibes, I thank you for your comments also! You four have made my day. :)

Congratulations
This is so engaging. A really tough subject to sing about but your swooping and soaring voice is so powerful. Would love to hear a bit of accompanyment all the way through and I llok forward to version two. Wonderful. Mark
