What’s this one about? Well to my 15 year old son, going to “Town” on a Saturday afternoon to meet up with his friends is just about the highlight of his week. Personally I now avoid town unless absolutely necessary. However his enthusiasm reminded me of a time when the three amigos used to drive into Exeter on a Saturday in our late teens and the stuff we used to get up to. The song lyrics just flowed out of those reminiscences based around a chord sequence I’d had for a while. Steve came through with his trusty mandola and I did the rest.

The picture above is of the two other little reprobates from 1981 Andy and Dave. Oh and for the benefit of overseas listeners an “NCP” is short for a car park, and a “Bakewell tart” is a type of cake or alternatively?

Andy drives the car
Tax ran out last month
And the brakes have a mind of their own

Driving into town
Watch the road fly by
Through a rusty hole in the floor

Pull the car into an NCP
Hang around the meter
Try to get a ticket for free

We came of age we hit the town
We were kings we hit the town

Onto the high street
Checking out the skirt
Might be a chance to meet

Swapping labels at the back of the shop
It’s not stealing
Just creating a bargain

We came of age we hit the town
We were kings we hit the town

A liquid lunch then on
To the cake shop next door
There’s old lady behind the counter

She wants us to go
But we all need the sweet stuff
And Andy tells her so

Andy wash your mouth out
There’s no need to swear
Lets go to the park across the road

We sleep off a lunchtime pint or four
While Andy goes down on a Bakewell tart
He only met an hour before

did you buy my old Fiat 850? Brakes with a mind of their own and a panoramic view of the road passing beneath the car. This is shit 'ot,reminds me of me yooth in Mansfield and Ravenshead ,Kirkby -in -Ashfield etc.I like the uptempo downtempo switcheroo between verse and chorus ...nice pun on the Bakewell, tho' I understand that the folks of Bakewell will have it tht it is a Pudding not a tart.....not the same is it

i'm sure i saw you at 'time-piece'. i used to do the same...walk around...do nothing....no money.
liked this....i love the little hooks you come up with like 'fox slips under the wheel'. excellent guitar work. my brother bought jarvoid's fiat 850. the chorus on this is so catchy...it's slipping under my wheel.

Just creating a bargain. Great Lyrics, really enjoy this form of story telling. Reminds me of a wonderful celtic duo called The O'Brien Brothers out of Dublin. Nice hooks throughout, well done.
