Description
A song from the archives.
Last year, my guitar was stolen. In the case were over 50 original songs. Most of them are lost forever. Not all of them, though. A couple years ago I transferred a bunch of recordings from an old cassette tape I found. I posted some of those recordings but left a couple of them behind, not really liking the recording and with a vague idea that some day I'd re-do them. Well that's not going to happen now due to my being guitar-less. I found one of the recordings in my iTunes and to my surprise, I even had the lyrics typed up (good thing because this song was in the guitar case and therefore gone for good, or so I thought).
Before the MJ reunion disappears for good, I figured I could post this song from the archives. The vocals are from a much younger Joanna and the guitar playing was never my strongest asset, but it's a story song and was fun to play. I hope you enjoy it!

Lyrics
Sailor Boy
Why did we ever get married
If you weren't going to stay?
Why give me a child?
And then leave me that way?
I waited alone for your return
I waited, just me and our son
But no knock was answered with your face
We couldn't believe what you'd done.
REFRAIN:
Why did you leave me, my sailor boy?
Why did you go away?
Why did you tell me you loved me?
And why did you come back today
Today – why come back today?
Ten years had passed; I had grown ill
Until the message arrived
A wind had kicked your boat away
And all the sailors had died
I picked up the pieces of my heart
And the doctor healed my mind
In him I realized that I had
Found a man who was kind.
::REFRAIN::
I was happy with Dr. Noe
You were out of my life
Then the phone rang and my heart
Was cut by a sailor's knife
You had managed to get away
And you realized what life was about
Then remembered there once was a girl that you'd loved
And returned by the quickest route.
::REFRAIN::
Now you're here in my family
The sailor meets Dr. Noe
And I only wish a single thought
That the sailor would leave me and go.
The doctor fears that I lied to him
My son learns truths that burn.
The neighbors breathe scandal happily
And all of my tears have returned.
Why don't you leave, sailor boy?
Go out on the next tide.
Life would've been so much easier
If you only had died.
Died! If you only had died.
Why did we ever get married
If you weren't going to stay?
Why give me a child?
And then leave me that way?
I waited alone for your return
I waited, just me and our son

I felt terrible reading about your stolen guitar and the 50+ songs also in the case. Such an awful thing.
When I was a in college, I had just finished a 287 measure double quartet that I was proofing before handing it in as my end-of-year project for composition master class. In my briefcase I has placed not just the handwritten final score, but all my notes and drafts... to make sure I'd included every idea that needed to be included. I was practicing my sax as well in a practice room, but stopped to walk someone down to the lobby. When I got back upstairs, my sax and briefcase were stolen. I checked every garbage can on campus, hoping the thief would've found my music and simply tossed it. I never found the music (or sax) and have never tried to rewrite that music or reuse any of those themes.
Thanks for sharing this. Authentic and a unique take on the sailor gone story line. Your style gives this modern twist a timeless feel.
