Song of Mbira (Updated)

Get Flash to see this player.

This is an updated version of a previously posted song. The main change in this version occurs in the choral section. It seemed a little out of place so I changed the rhythm in the voices, added additional percussion and some vocal grunts (for lack of a better word). The latter was missing in the previous version but was in the original version that I recorded years ago so I guess I just kept hearing it in my head and wanted it back in there. o get the effect I just recorded myself eight times then stacked the recording and spread them out over the stereo field.

Other than that there are a couple of very subtle changes, but mostly it's pretty much true to the previous version.

You nailed it
I love this piece. Such a great job of evoking the savannah. Great clarity in the mix, excellent uses of all sonic tools - you made excellent decisions while composing, arranging, and mixing this. Really well done, Graham. Thanks for the gift.

loved v1. This steps it up again. The grunts reminded me of Civilization (the game). It evokes a world soundtrack that floats in the background and inspires imagery.

Well, okay....
...yeah... I'll put three versions of this tune into my MacJams Favorites playlist... why not?.... I'll play them back to back while toodling around town to return my library books and pick up guitar strings....

As is always the case with your stuff, there's just a cool quality to the tonalities here, and in the headphones this is almost a demonstration track of a wraparound stereo field...

how did I miss this??
wow I'm even more behind on listening than I thought I was. I love that atmospheric opening leading into the great thumb piano(?) and the gradual addition of different percussion textures is awesome. so many incredible moving, weaving layers. and your production of this is outstanding - even with all that's going on, it never feels crowded or compressed. those vocals are great. very very cool Graham.

The musical scope...
of this is amazing! Grand and with its own indigenous pride and awesome power. Fantastic. I remember liking your previous version but this really blew me away. All the subtleties are mixed in so beautifully from beginning to the end. I rarely download tracks, but this one I've got to have!

What a beautiful scene you create in this piece. Interesting variety of instruments and a beautifully clear sound. I love the interplay between the instruments and the changes in tone that you get. The sound effects near the end are well integrated. Much enjoyed!

Classically trained composer and orchestrator. Been doing sound design and synthesis for a long time. Enjoying the incredible power of computers and samples, but it's great just to sit down with a guitar or analog synth and just play too. Graham ... [see more]
