Visceral Vanity

 Genre: Metal

So this is just the instrumental track I made with GB loops... And, as many have been requesting, THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECTS ON MY VOICE. None. Whatsoever. This is as raw and pure and unfiltered as it can get. This is my voice. Done. No vocoding. No reverb. No fancy ambient effects. Just my voice.

Enough ranting =)
As heavy as the lyrics seem, it's really just about people who are vain and hide themselves from the ones who love them. This song is beseeching them to take a chance and show people who they really are.

I'm through with false pretenses
Masks of skin that hide ourselves
Reveal your soul to me

Visceral vanity
Flesh is a lie
Don't ever try to hide
I want to see what you like like on the inside
Are your guts pretty enough for me?
Visceral vanity
Expose your guts to me
I want to see them, I want to see!

Tear off the flesh so that
Nothing can come between us
Pure as pure can get
Nothing hides or betrays us

Let go of all your doubts now
Flesh is just a falsity
It's your vanity that will break you
So bare your guts for all to see

Tear tear tear off the flesh
Isn't it so sensuous?
Nothing comes between us!

Give it up for me
Give it up for me
Give it up for me
And show me who you really are (x2)

Your face has always been a lie
Cut it off
And show me the inside
What could be purer than this?

All falsities can be erased
I just need a little taste
Like a surgeon
I'll find out your little secrets

Skin, what have you done for me?
Hidden all my purity?
Caged up all my real beauty?
I'm setting it free, letting it all go free!

You can't control me anymore
I'm not your plaything
Your bound and gagged whore
My insides will see the world tonight
You can't stop this, you can't even try

I want to see what you look like on the inside (x2)

Sever, dismember, and let it all go free
I wanted to make it
The whole world can see
Viscera is your true beauty
So don't cloud it with your
Flesh of vanity

I can see through your disguise

I'm through with false pretenses
Masks of skin that hide ourselves
I'm through with false pretenses
Your flesh, you hide yourself

I'm through with false pretenses
Masks of skin that hide ourselves
I'm through with false pretenses
Vanity, you hide yourself...

My vocal chords, a mac, and a built-in mic

This reminds me a little of Otep or Flyleaf. Awesome!

Well then, despite the rather graphic evisceration of lyrical metaphors (gives a new meaning to "spill your guts" I guess), and the vocal-chord blowout, you do indeed have a very nice voice, and we can now tell that you can sing on key too. There is something wonky with the mix here, though, the music backing sounds a little thin, maybe needs a little equalization tweaking on some instruments, and your voice tracks too... you can probably get a richer sound even though it says you are using a built-in mic. But other than that, very impressive use of loops to create a compelling song, and excellent melody/harmony and pacing. I think you have a strong talent for this! Also, excellent choice of artwork... did you photoshop that yourself or just find something appropriate?

i did indeed photoshop the artwork myself =) I thought the lyrics were graphic enough that gruesome cover art was not necessary, but I tried to contrive something fitting. I'm glad it worked well! I'll try not to sing in a closet next time (I'll try to mix my voice/backtrack a little better so it sounds more full...)

Nice job!
You put a lot of good work in here! It sounds great and is well arranged! My only thing is that sometimes on the occasion you sing a little out of tune, but even then that's soemthing that can be fixed with practice. Great job!

Very creative to try a metal song with GB loops. It has a lot of the elements of metal except the instrumentation. Maybe you will be able to get some heavier drum and guitar loops and then the metal sound will be more authentic. I always have trouble with the drums in my music. Its hard to get just the right sets and beats. This beat works, its just not heavy enough (try to eq it and use compresion). Another thing you can try is doing some stuff with the computer keyboard (if you don't have a MIDI keyboard). Like you could lay down a thumping bass line. Even if you make mistakes, you can then drag the midi notes so the timing and tune are right. Then map it to one of the rock basses in GB. You are very creative and musically inclined, so keep at it. This shows promise.

good voice!
but, mixed too high. if the kick and snare had some punch, and the guitar some midrange presence to compete, it would sound better. It's all well and good not to process the vox, but I think that usually means tweaking what's around it a great deal to suit it.

well listen to that!
Oh good grief girl, you can SING!! A little Evanescence inspiration in here (hope that's ok to say). I LOVE the denegration of the vocal delivery in the chorus from your beautiful melodic singing into the metal-growl. I agree with Stephen, you have put together a really great tune with those loops, but the energy of this song really NEEDS some LIVE thrashing guitars and drums. OOH and I love when the song sort of falls apart into chaotic angst at 3:00 and nice tempo slow down around 4:00. YOU need to find a band, girlfriend! Contact QuickPickRecords or some of the other metalheads on the site. I love love love this. And what an incredibly cool ending to the song. As far as mixing - I don't know anything about putting vocals into a mix, but you'll find someone who can teach you. volume levels here seem perfect to me, but there's a different reverb kind of feel to the vocals versus the instruments that make them sound like they were definitely NOT recorded together or in the same sort of space. and there are ways to manipulate that. Anyway, Addison, you're going to be a star methinks. :D

Bad juju is good
There's some good, bad sick-crazy juju metal in them pipes, sister. I'm new to you but there's no need to go naked on the vocal FX ... not sure why or who that request came in. My prism's a little more narrow than yours, genre-wise, but I appreciate the bad attitude you bring here.

Hey, Addi here. Hopefully I'll be coming out of this hiatus soon, but no promises. I'm working on something, I'm not sure if I'm happy with it but maybe it will make its way up here. -Vocalist, painter, poet.... [see more]
