Olivers Birthday

Get Flash to see this player.

Some years ago I was teaching in a primary school on a rough estate as a visiting speaker. There was a scrawny little kid in this class who was always so keen, so polite and so enthusiastic. Sometime during the lesson I gave him a sticker for effort. At the end of the lesson the class teacher told me that it was in fact Oliver’s birthday that day. His grandmother had apparently given him some birthday money but his mother had spent it all on booze. The teacher told me the sticker I’d given him was probably the only present he would get. Couldn’t get this kid out of my head and just kept thinking of the contrast between his life and my young sons.

A solo song recorded at a friends with a far better set up than mine hence the higher production values than my usual stuff!

Sometimes I feel I’ve come so far
When I watch my son, run across
“Froggy Pond Field”
I think of all the places that’s I’ve been
But nothing beats this scene
It doesn’t take much to make you laugh
When the sun is shining and your only
Three and half

You’ve got to know
When your having a moment
Realise when your soul is alive
Don’t let it pass by into a distant memory
You kind of look back
With a sigh

Sing, sing, sing it’s Olivers Birthday
Sing, sing, sing make him feel great
Sing, sing, sing it’s Oliver’s birthday
The saddest young lad
On this estate

He puts on a smile
Like a false tan
And gives the appearance of
A happy young man
But I bet he felt so sad inside
The day he found his parents lied
Or the day that Eric
Morcambe died

I think of Oliver
I think of my son
Both trying so hard to please
Living his life as a fish out of water
A frightened young lamb
Led to the slaughter
Staring and silent
As the pain within
He really must grow
A thicker skin

Had a couple of
listens to this and it reminds me of being at junior school in Wollaton and the vcaried backgrounds of kids that were there ,including probably one or two 'Olivers'.Nicely realised and performed song without being maudlin and over sentimental.Great performance as usual and spot on production.

Just one nit....why wasn't the little ba****d dahn pit instead of bothering his mam for her beer money?.........................Jarvoid

Very Nice
I like the pounding drum groove set against the more gentle instruments (guitar and winds). The chorus reminded me of XTC. Well done.

Olivers Birthday
I like the laid back vibe here. Nice picking, vocals sound good, flute or recorder in the background is a good choice for accompaniment. Reminds me of "Oliver Twist"

Great song
about a worthy subject. Enjoy everything about this piece. Only thing I'm unsure about is the placement of the drums off to the left in the mix. But the writing, playing, and singing are simply ACES as per usual.

Be well friends!

That wind instrument is magical! Gotta love that!
Great lyrics.
The guitar picking sounds great. Really appreciated it during the break after the first chorus, very catchy indeed.
Actually the whole song is catchy. I have a feeling its gonna be in my head a while.

Good Song and Story
Good job with lyrics and production. The guitar seems a bit compressed, but overall a good song.
