Joel Schubert, my brother in Christ, will be leaving this life soon and go to his blessed reward. As one marker of his life and faith I am reposting this remix of his song which I had uploaded about 3-1/2 years ago.

Update... I posted this remix about 9 hours ago. Just a little while ago I received the sad news that Joel had died.
To my oldest and dearest friend... "to be with Christ; which is far better." (Phil. 1:23) May 10, 2010

Original song info from 2006:
A fun, bluegrass/gospel song written by my good friend Joel Schubert and recorded at my home. You can't know how much this song has affected me as I have worked on it. Joel wrote this song way back in 1973 in Isla Vista, CA. While single, he and I lived in the same apartment. Likewise, my wife Barb and Cilla (Joel's wife) lived together in another apartment. We all belonged to the same church. Well anyway, I suggested to Joel about... I don't know, a year ago?... that he and I record this song. Well, the opportunity never arose. Then when the dread "Mr. C" came a knockin' on Joel's door, I immediately thought of the song and the obvious additional meaning to the line "I'm gonna be an overcomer." Recording this became top priority. I am thankful that we had the chance last weekend to record both Joel's and Cilla's vocals. I am happy with the result and so are they.

Vocals: Joel & Cilla
Slide guitar, harmonica, bass, whistling: Jack
Drums, acoustic guitar picking: Loops

I'm Gonna Be An Overcomer

I'm gonna be an overcomer,
Nothing in this world can hold me back
Ever since I met my Lord Jesus
I've been travelin' on a one way track.

1. Sitting on the throne with my Jesus
Reigning with Him all dressed in white.
My names's written down in that great big book
Made holy by His own true light.

2. No more tears, no more sorrows,
Parting shall never more be.
Drinking from the living fountain
Hidden manna and a new name for me.

3. Eating from the tree of life,
No need to fear the second death.
I'm gonna be an overcomer,
If it takes me to my very last breath.

4. Faithful is He who has called me
To finish the work that He's begun.
And when this life is finally over,
All the glory goes to God's only Son.

i don't remember hearing this. great in the traditional style. i like the harmonica and the brief acoustic slide ( they are subtle but totally add to the mix.

Sorry to hear about losing your friend. What a lovely tribute to his memory.

Love the skiffle band feel of this--snare and brushes, harmonica, acoustic slide. Very tasty.

Joel's comment from 2006 song post...
From Joel to those that commented on his song:

"Thanks to all for the well wishes and prayers. I really appreciate them all. My good friend Jack, Dadai, did a great job on the song and is responsible for making it a fun, meaningful and memorable event for me. To know that the song is being listened to and enjoyed by others makes it all that much better"
