One more song for the handbells. This one was custom written for a class where I have a boy who is learning folk guitar, so it's in the key of D so he can accompany us. It does stand alone, though, as a tone chime song, and it's a pentatonic song to boot, so many of my students have learned to play it on the black keys of the piano.

Eyes like a morning star, Cheeks like a rose.
Laura was a pretty girl, everybody knows.
Weep all ye little rains, wail winds, wail.
All along, along, along the Colorado Trail.

Yep, PowerBook G4 is still going strong. (2 of the 3 kids in college next year)
finale, midi transfer to garageband for volume boost and voicing enhancement.

Did they sing this on the CO trail
accompanying themselves on tuned pots and pans?

Nice song. It must give students great satisfaction to be able to play it on a piano, with minimal training.

But it sounds like it would make a good story! We spend the year learning American music in 5th grade. From 'Chester' to 'Turn, Turn, Turn' . Our end of the year concert reflects that. We also play, "I've Been Working on the Railroad" on the chimes. Again, not the instrumental ensemble you might expect, but we have a good time with it.

Arranging music that is within reach of a child's abilities but still has some depth is quite a challenge. I also like hearing how you prepared it so it would allow your young guitarist to shine. All marks of a great teacher.

Sweet song
well, more than sweet, very touching... and the handbells really add beauty to it.

It takes a lot of patience to teach them how to play handbells, each student waiting patiently for their turn to ring their bell, at exactly the right moment... but when it starts to come together, I bet the joy is palpable!

Handbell queen!!!
You are that, KJ. This is such a pretty little tune. (I liked Vic's comment about tuned pots and pans. If THAT were an option, YOU would pull it off well, too.) Your students are so lucky to have not only a creative teacher, but a fine musician to lead them to brand new levels of sound and composition. ... Did you write the lyrics? Nice (either way).
