Fag Ash Lily [with Taylor Morgan]

Description
I took one of Taylor Morgan's kindly offered open collab files, which I really liked, and added some stuff to it. I'd have loved to work with the original files, but there ya go! Taylor's track is called "over, over" and you can find it here:

http://www.macjams.com/song/60411

It's sort of Downtempo, I think. As well as Taylor's excellent track, there are six synth tracks, seven percussion tracks and a Logic EXPS24 bass track. I've used the Zebra 2 softsynth, Ultrabeat, and the Dubstation AU. I also used Logic's Space Designer on some of the percussion tracks.

Oh, and if I've posted this in the wrong way [a collab] please let me know and I will change it. It's the first collab I've posted myself - yay!

Any crits always welcome. Thanks for listening!

I usually put
(w So and so) in the title. But you listed him in the song art and the description. It is a very engaging piece. You created a serene background for brilliant flashes of dynamics. I enjoyed it. I was humming along. :)

Lush
Will check out the original later but this is really lush and cool.
Sort of Banco de Gaia / Enigma vibe to it.
The backward cymbal and the ride cymbal really add to it.
Was thinking some vox samples here and there would add to it a bit.
Gregorian monks or Bulgarian choirs or something like that.
Would have liked the bass up just a touch in the mix but that's just my preference.
Anyway, just the stuff to start this sunny Friday morning
cheers

Thanks!
The original is a really, really cool groove. I'd have loved to work on all the files and not just the MP3, isolating the different elements and weaving my own stuff therein. But I couldn't. The bass in my version is very simple, I had to keep it so. I added some extra kick and tried to up the "sparkle" on Taylor Morgan's own percussion. It was not that easy, because I couldn't isolate it from his excellent pad sounds. The cymbals just seemed the right thing to do. I hope I haven't drowned out too much of the original, as said, I like it very much. I like the idea of a Bulgarian choir, btw!

I've got some doubts about the title now. It was a whim, but perhaps I should have left the original title in, or called it "Over, Over and Over" or some such. Oh well.

Thanks again for your kind comments. Much appreciated! And please do go and listen to the original.

I'm not
too sure what "downtempo" means really, I dislike genres, generally, in music! But thanks for you kind words.

Hi Dave......
This is a great, great collab.. I've downloaded both versions and will be listening closely over the next couple of days as I rebuild my laptop to it's former state.

It's awesome by the way....The track.

Take care. I'll reply to your note over the weekend.

Sooooooo Smooth
This is just so smooth and lush. Great chord changes. This just invites a vocalist. Or how about a horn. Like a Miles Davis muted trumpet. Love when the bass walks the eighth notes.

Now you've
got the collaboration bug, maybe you could offer this up for vocal additions - could work very well I think.
Lovely track - I especially like the panning effects, great production.

first collab
Excellent song built around Taylor's tidbit. I especially love the percussion tracks on this. You've got a nice combo of sonic textures - the little arppeggio thingy that comes in around 1:35 is great. Love that cymbal swell to bring in the higher synths at 2:30. A very well put together piece Dave - relaxing at the end of the day to this. Nice.

Variety
You're using some A+ sounds here. So soundwise it's all fine. I'm sort of missing an occasional melodic hook. It can be very simple, just a few notes on a piano, but on a track of this length you need to do slightly more than spinning chords.

Otherwise much enjoyed.

There's great skill
in carefully choosing what can meld with the initial track to both bring new life and keep the integrity of the original. You've achieved it really well here. I hope to learn more about the Logic synths myself when I get more time.

Many thanks for the new dload Mr. Jones!

Cheers,
Doug

Nice touches Dave
BIG sounds work together to make this a really lush experience. Lots of light and shade (I always find that hard to do in this sort of music) and intelligent use of Ultrabeat. Fantastic cymbal swells around 2:30.
All round, a terrific post.
