The Knight Of Patchouli

Get Flash to see this player.

Its a song about a knight who is on his deathbed and he never killed anyone.Patchouli is my favourite aftershave.I really struggle with this song - its been going round and round for a long time now - I just had to settle with what I could and could not do in the end.

I think its inspired by the song 'When A Knight Won His Spurs' and the film Excalibur.

Thank you - RG

The Knights Of Patchouli

I was once a warrior
I fought all with my heart
Vowing for justice to be done
For honour and for valour,
struck down the mighty beast
But now I fear Valhalla's time has come

Woah - sky is a-spinning
I turn to my dead friend who calls me
To the beginning of all I have battled for

Nemesis my fate - she handed me the sword
But I was never a man for drawing blood
Darkness brought The Shamen
To the edges of the Glade
And there he showed me all that must be done

"Run now - speak to the shadows"
- I cried and I crawled through this madness
To where you suffered
You smiled and I knew you'd survive

Surely if the pen is mightier than the gun
Nations would find the time to write
A ledger of salvation
An Elixir for life
- Even children know whats wrong from right

Oh Oh dreams are assailing
Where lies the Greenwood?
From Whence I first saw you running
Pray take me back to your door

I never believed in a million years
That I could be here in the morning breeze
And nobody killing
You couldn't be wrong even if you tried
When you said I never robbed and said I never lied
But I did begin to feel....free

I was once a warrior
I fought all with my heart
Looking for justice to be done
For cowardice and shame
I fought the beast within
Now Only scars of love and hate Remain

RIDE NOW - from Staffa to Lulworth
Tell them to dig for the gold I
Lost in the Sun From your - Blue and
All seeing eye...

I'm not Freud...
...but I think your dreams would have been of great interest to him (I can only match that one with the time I dreamed I was a prune danish). Beautiful job Richard--fooking brilliant really! I see why you came highly recommended now. Highest marks!

The Knight after shave
Wow this is so brilliant! Beautiful story and the feel of a real knight tale ... feels like the knight is still riding his horse in his memories. This has some real soundtrack quality in it, I was carried away immediately to an ancient place with old castles, forests and battle fiels. Thanks!

Sort of
a Rick Wakeman meets Jethro Tull and have a bloody good old collaboration.Patchouli Oil was the in smell of the late 60's and early 70's has it been revived ?

I think this may have been inspired by too much cheese before bed....if so ,then buy a truckle of stilton and have at it !

Good job here,much liked.

The lyrics shine,
and the music is perfect for this dream of yours. Or is it a dream ? Me thinks it's more a statement of your philosophy on life Richard, and an affirmation of living with the consequences of what we've done in the past.

Okay now, enough with the analysis. It's a great song, very well done, although I did catch you fumbling on the lyrics at one point, (Even children know whats wrong from right)

No matter my friend, this was an effort well worth finishing, and you did it very well indeed.

I love it,

This reminds me
of the film 'A Yankee In King Arthurs Court'.... musically it's like a mediaeval journey and I love the way the orchestration weaves in and out. I think this is a great arrangement and very original in the mix. Great lyrics and vocals to boot, cheers Rick... good to see you about again, M

Love the
way your songs come from all sorts of different places Rich.
This is intriguing and kept me listening intently to the end. Love the unusual use of reverb coming and going. Great orchestration too. Will listen to this many times.
Downloaded. Thanks.

To be able to speak about your music, I feel the need to introduce an adjective: paddleric, paddlic or sumthn' like that.

The meaning of the term is: really creative, inventive music with warm, depth and soul. But it is also more than that. It means music that carry a very special spirit that, so far, I've only heard RG Paddler create. And that is what makes me just love that music. It is original, personal music from the musician whose creations that I've learned to just love. It also means that it is music that fills a space that cannot be filled by anyone but just that artist. If I'd never heard it I wouldn't have understood that there was an ufilled hole in the space of possible musical creation. But now that I've started to hear and dig it, it would be a big and sad loss if it wasn't there. So, for me - to my soul - it is kind of important that the paddleric creations keep coming now and then. It contributes (together with some other great expressions made by men) to my feeling that there is hope for man, for love and for life.

Hope it doesn't sound all to fuzzy, I am trying to express something that doesn't really have words attached. Something that is evolving from within. Something that is very important to me.

I guess we'll just have to settle for this amazing production
what a great job you did with this song. I really like the orchestral backing and the story is excellent. You sound so comfortable singing in this environment. Very cool post.

Sir Richard I presume?
What a production - I particularly love how you move between the intimacy of how you tell the story with the vocals and how they grow in dignity and conviction with the orchestral accompaniment to something quite grand and wonderful. Just coming from a Moody Blues concert this past week I hear their influences in bits, but you have a fresh take on the subject and its presentation.

Lovely work, and a most enjoyable listen.

When I heard the intro
"is this a folk song ???" I wondered. Then came the rest, I'm absolutely delighted. You're incredibly good, it's such a subtle mixture you created here. I'd love to be able to write songs like you do, one day !

I'm blown away, this is real good !

Hi Richard,
The variety of music you make amazes me. I thought the folk label was a bit misleading for the first few bars of the intro but after the first verse I was thinking “yea” this is folk (what’s folk anyway?). The orchestral bursts give it the feel of a big film score and yet the quieter sections with voice and guitar give it an intimate folksy feel. I don’t know how you’ve managed to get these two polar opposites to weld together but you have – to my ears it’s one of you best mate.

esp at the start. Nice folky sound after the epic sounds. Interesting composition. Really liked it though. Very nice.
