If I Ran The Circus

Description
I've had the bassline and guitar riff in my head for about a 2 years, waiting for some lyrics to fit the mood. Un-luckily the recession reared into view and gave me and my family a swift kick to the head, gut and butt. Job layoff, relocation to another state (Arizona) and all the stress and trials that go along with this kind of upheaval and life changing events, gave me the fodder I needed to sing about. Now that things have settled a bit these past few months, I've been able to get back to work with my music. On the positive side, myself and family have emerged much closer and stronger than ever. So that's cool.

This is about as political as your gonna get from my central/liberal leanings. I don't have any answers here, just some calling attention to all the BS that has brought so many honest people to their knees. Interestingly, by chance the lyrics also fit well with the toilet bowl that is the gulf oil spill. Again big business/politics and greed, ruining things for the rest of us.

Music, drum programming etc. are all original. Tenor sax and vocals are my doing as well.

Feedback is always welcome. Enjoy!

Lyrics
Pull up your anchors
There's nothing here for us anymore
The homeland has turned on its lovers
And sank us down so low

Thank all your mothers
That she branded your manners well
You can disguise your motives, yeah
While you spin your spell

(chorus)
If I ran the circus
Tell you what I'd do
If I ran the circus
No harm to me and you
Come correct please
With so much more to lose
I want some trust, I wanna trust you
Before I make my move

No one wants the truth
It might prove you wrong
Facts are changin with your P.O.V.
Twisted to keep a failed plan strong

Make the sky your alter
And let no secrets hide
Shout off that clutter, yeah
and let your dealings shine and shine

(chorus)
f I ran the circus
Tell you what I'd do
If I ran the circus
No harm to me and you
Come correct please
With so much more to lose
I want some trust, I wanna trust you
Before I make my move
So if I ran the circus
Tell you what I'd do
No harm baby
No harm to me and you and you and you

Thanks Moviz
Thanks for listening. I don't usually write music or sing about stuff this heavy, so it was a new experience for me.

If I Ran The Circus
the title grabbed me, the music kept me - this is some fine work, great lyrics and great message - congrats on this!

Thank you
The title is actually from an obscure Dr. Seuss book, but the phrase means something like "Well, my opinion about that is . . ."

Circus
I love it when the guitar follows the bass like it sounds like it's doing in the beginning--I just think that is a really cool effect. "Twisted to keep a failed plan strong" is an awesome line! Cool song.

Thanks for listening. Glad the lyrics create some sort of response, otherwise I'll just stick to instrumentals.

if i ran the circus
great soundbed, and really pro mix. i wonder whether you're hiding your voice a little too much behind everything. anyway, great pop rock track.

Yep
I am hiding behind the effects a bit as its my first lead vox attempt on my own stuff. It has been tough to get the mix and sound how I envision it. Hopefully the next song will have better results.

Of course
this is going to kick butt and be one awesome great production!

This is totally awesome man! Excellent lyrics and vocals. Great work!

I really dig how you incorporate stutters into your beats; that's something that I've been trying to do with only marginal success. That adds a whole new realm to the song.

Thanks Fasteddie
I'm actually not sure if I was aware of the stutter stuff, at least it just sort of happened without too much thought, but I'm glad the effect is working. Thanks for stopping by.

Very cool Fastball and/or Smash Mouth vibe. really like the chorus. Great heavy grinding backing track.

Thanks
for the Smash Mouth reference. I know they are played ad nauseum on the radio, but they are master pop songwriters.

If I Ran The Circus
Nice groove, like that crunchy guitar sound anchoring it. I like your hook, and there is some nice imagery in the lyric "Make the sky your alter". Good vocs, and the sax sounds good.

Great Tune
First I must say, I'm really happy that you & your family are okay and things are looking better for you. Times are hard all around for so many people.

Now the track, yeah this is cool! The lyrics are powerful & you sang them with conviction. Awesome job!

Yeah - it's almost there!
Hey Kic-Man - You've got something here that could be killer but I don't think it's there yet - and I am rooting for you, all positive. If I ran the circus of this song, I would improve the chorus. I'd put the lyric hook over that sax section, and, introduce the guitar an octave higher. Get those harmonies fat with stereo effects. AND the "no harm to me and you" line in the chorus is something that would not happen - passive - instead of something you would actively do. Running the Circus isn't passive - you gotta' think of something you would do to those responsible. It's a timely song, killer guitar riff, I like the vocals and lyrics - it's worth working on!

Thans you much for the comments and recommendations. I agree that something is a bit amiss with the chorus and will likely try something to improve it, but I need a break from the song for a moment.

groovy!
You locked onto that groove and had some real fun with it. Cool you'd sat on that bassline for so long and then found a killer setting for it (every cloud has a silver lining eh?).
I'm loving effects in here.

Kicbal coolio :)
Sometimes late at night, I love to cruise ppls stuff and I'm glad I found this one. The bass synth and guitar are very cool to drive the rhythm. Love the lyrical content-it seems pertinent to todays mess. All in all it reminds me of a little of DEVO's groove, with driving beat and vocals to boot.

If you ever do revisit the song, I would love to hear more sax to come along for the ride, it just seemed liked it was too short. Everything else seemed to move along just nice!

I hope you put out another one soon, you're about due XD

ThankYou ThankYou
Yeah, I do plan on revisiting this. I want to redo the chorus (never been happy with it) with something completely different and want to possibly use some real guitars (from Gator4040) instead of the synth guitar mimics. Got this and 2 other songs in the works, but my output is so slow that I can't commit to a release date just yet.
