Description
Here is a song that I have about 48 versions of. OK maybe a tad bit of hyperbole there. The topic is a little deep for such a rockin song, but hey, this was originally a folk song. Jeff on the awesome guitars, keyboard and arrangement. Bass was done by a studio musician in Jeff's studio. The drums were done by either Scott Fugate or an online drum website, not 100% sure and haven't heard from Scott in a while. I will clarify that ASAP.

Cool Vocal Layering
I love the combination of the lead vocals and the haunting background vocal layering--that really works well. The lyrics are deep--which is cool--but, at the same time, this song rocks! I actually think the lyrics are perfect for the song, with the minor key and everything. I also like the "funkified" feel of the guitar work on the chorus.

Tyrants of the Past
I like the arrangement, and the performances are excellent. There are spots in the song however, particularly in the chorus, and the last verse before the lead break where the tracks overwhelm the vocals

Charles,
I'm sorry you messed with this so much because I think it becomes more work than fun. Obviously, you were passionate about this one. And, there will probably be a 49th version... sometime. But it is very good, here and now. So, be satisfied that you sang your heart out. And the guitars are equally soulful. Thanks.

This song really hasnt been a lot of work. Jeff pretty much did the entire arrangement on it. I did it originally but he wasnt happy with the sound quality because he has much better gear than I do. As for the other version of the song: I have a version of this song that JDHolliday sang. I also have a live version, and a mellower version with a flangy guitar (same arrangement as the one JDHolliday sang).

I liked this one in version #23 too
but I think this is getting stronger with revision. The verse-chorus differentiation is striking without being discontinuous, and your vocal arrangement sounds done.

The awesome guitars are indeed awesome too.

Well...
This is my first time to hear it and it sounds fat and full, has a great arrangement. You continually write great songs and I still feel that you are one of the best singers on MJ's...would love to work with you at some point. Peace!

WOW
Thanks a lot, that means a lot to me. I try and do the best that I can with what I was genetically encoded with (at least I do in music anyway). Sure, if you get something that you have in mind, let me know.

I can hear
how this might work better as a simple folk song. This is good too.. but I'm not sure this arrangement delivers your intention as well as a simpler version might.
Peace

oh yeah?
I have that too, lol. I have this song in just about every version but reggae. In fact, I have a folkish version with James (jdholliday) singing, one with me singing, and a live version with just me and a guitar.

First time
it reaches my ear, and already sticks to my skin for the rest of the day. Very powerful song writing and ditto production. Sang with gusto and balls. Plenty of sweets to like here.

Rockin
I like this mix; full, rocking, grooving, all of the instruments are clear and don't walk on each other. Solid songwriting. Excellent vocals and guitar in particular. Really, this is quite an awesome effort, bravo!

And everything else?
You said "Jeff on the awesome guitars" ... does that mean you did everything else? Wow, man ... this is some great stuff. Your vocal range defies classification. I've heard you sound REO Speedwagon ("Beat Up Car"), I've heard you sound heavy ("There Was A Time") ... here I'm feeling a bit of Foreigner - a rare balance of cleanness of tone and rock energy. You know I'm a fan of your vocals, and this might be your best yet. Great lyrics, too ... can't go wrong with a little white angst.

With regard to the song, there are some really cool things happening. Great performances to begin with, great instrument selections (love that bass), and some cool prodcution elements like the slapback reverb on the snare. Very well done!

Good point
I posted 18 songs in one day so I missed a few things. I initially did all the instruments for this song but Jeff wanted to redo it in his studio for better quality sound. I gave him the chords etc and he recorded it there. As for the drums, not exactly sure who did them, we recorded so many songs in a row. I think this one may have been Scott Fugate, but it also could have been an online studio drummer website. Jeff put the keyboard accents in as well. The bass was a studio musician at Jeff's studio, I do not have his name. I will see if I can get it. thanks for pointing out what I was missing in my description.

Very cool
Smooth rocker. Excellent singing like that voice. Tight track and everything is very clear and where it should be in the mix. Love the slash style solo at the end. Yeah, this is catchy, well made sirs.

Pro Stuff
Love how this song took that turn at 50 seconds. I was able to follow the lyrics, but would be nice to have them, too.

Country/funk is that possible? Yes it is!
