My wife and I are doing some live performances in North America this year (if any of you are on the US West Coast and want us to play your venue, send me a message). We put down a few quick tracks to demo a bit of what we sound like live. It's recorded simply—two passes with a Zoom H2 recorder (one for voice, one for guitar) into GarageBand, mastered in Logic. There's also a 2-bar "chik" loop from the guitar to provide a little bit of percussion and help me stay on time.

Words by Isaac Watts (1707). Rather than using the Lowell Mason tune, we put it to the English folk song "O Waly, Waly." I doubt I'm the first person to do it this way. O Waly, Waly is such a dramatic melody, eh? Worthy of Watt's lyric.

Hope you all enjoy it.

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Very good quality for recording in such a stripped down matter. I am not a religious person but can appreciate the emotion in the vocal and the really nice guitar playing. Enjoyed it!

Back in my early 20s, I was practicing bass three hours a day, playing in a band with a drummer who practiced six hours a day and a guitarist who was one the "up and coming" lead guitar players of my home town. Plus, I was writing a song every day. I... [see more]
