Hypno

perceptualvortex

 Genre: Techno

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
The stuff that sounds like dueling androids was made on my iPad with iElectribe. I also subjected some of those sounds to Paulstretch, creating the atmospheric layers. Other noises come from Bass on Demand and Zero-G.

This isn't really genre=techno, and I'm not 100% happy with the title. If you have suggestions for either, let me know.

EDIT: I changed the title to "Hypno" which isn't as obscure or hard to pronounce as "Hypnagogia".

New fangled toys!
seem to work quite well in your hands David :)
I'm in the rather rare position of my wife starting to sound like she wants an iPad and I'm trying to talk her out of it - must have been that 60th birthday!
Sounds fascinating. No idea about titles - Hypnagogia does the trick for me.
Cheers,
N

Thanks, Neil! I am certainly enjoying i-Electribe... and my iPad in general. I think it's very cool, just remember that it doesn't replace a computer, but it does make a lot of computer activities more portable--much more so than a laptop. You're going to wind up buying her one, aren't you? :)
Thanks for listening!

Androids
Awesome addition of Middle Eastern vocals at :57 and throughout. I love how you describe the sound as "dueling androids", but it is also really kind of melodic. It sounds like you really poured a lot of hard word into every detail. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Catalina. I really have been tweaking this thing for the last two weeks, so thanks for noticing the hard work :) I'm a sucker for electronic noises and science-fictiony sounds, as well as Middle Eastern/Asian voices and instruments, so it's natural that I would try to find some way of blending them. I'm glad you enjoyed this, thanks for checking it out!

Very Cool Trip
Great to hear more experimentation on these portable devices showing up on MacJams. That electribe software looks amazing and you've done great things with it here outside the normal domain of "beats".

Trip
Thanks, Bubowski! The Electribe software is pretty amazing--I think. The fine tuned controls it gives you over the waveforms allows for a huge range of timbres and noise-shapes. I recommend it :) Now I have to check out this Nanostudio software...

Dueling Androids
I adore the description of dueling androids. I know nothing about techno but beyond that this is like someone said melodic, and also quite storied. I definitely see a struggle playing out and many realizations layering themselves over each other, the makings of a great tale. I love this track, and the work you've done here is intricate, and shines through flawlessly. Tnx for sharing that.

Droidfight!
Thanks for listening, BoiAfrica. It's good to hear your impressions. I too hear some kind of struggle in here, or it could just be the workings of some grand and puzzling process, robots out of control maybe. I think this is why I struggled so much with the title... I like what I hear, but it doesn't resolve itself conceptually--it just conjures interesting images and motion without a plot. I considered a generic title like "Construct 5".

Anyway, thank you, I'm very glad you enjoyed this!

It really is good, David....
...to once again be coming home from vacation time and finding MULTIPLE things in my email that indicate perceptualvortex postings....

I sense some difficulties with choosing genre names, which you are solving by the happy expedient of using techno... I think you're going to have to find a more precise descriptor, like 'perceptuo'... applying to things that flow from the mind and attached fingerages of David Thomas... I'm really enjoying your iPad excursions...

You're on to me
I really don't know what genre to go with... I figure, there's a lot of computer-y sounding stuff, 'technology', 'techno'... I dunno. I do know that it isn't flamenco. It's kind of like dance music--until I try to picture the people dancing to this. I think of it as 'psychedelic', but it's nothing like that cool music from the '60's and 70's.

I think you're right about having to find something more fitting. Perceptuo, Robot-Dance, Meltbeats, Electrospaz. Something like that but better. If inspiration hits, lemme know.

I hope you had a good vacation. I always appreciate you stopping by my tunes, Ed, and it's good to hear that you like these iPad things I'm making!

New Toys in the Right Hands
I suggest electro-awesome as the genre, which is what Matt and I use whenever we're stuck. We would be honored to have you as a fellow practitioner of electro-awesomeness and we can start a movement.

I love it whenever you get new stuff to play with. You bring a rock sensibilty to electronic music that is fairly rare and I love hearing what you come up with. As usual, the mix is IMMACULATE.

Is this a march? I hear marching robots, not a duel. There's something military about it.

March
I would be honored to join you and Matt, thank you. I'm sure we can gather legions of electro-awesome people.

Sure, I can definitely hear the march now... it's a little slow for a human march, so I think these robots must be a bit on the tall side. Thanks for your support, as always, Lisa. It's nice to see you back here. I'm glad you dig my tunes and mixes!!

Boy. This one just jumps through the speakers and makes me sit up and listen. An interesting collaboration of rhythm tracks. Seems like pots and pans at about 2:10. You've hit just about every button you could find, man. Very cool. And you even leaked in a little chant from the Middle East now and then. Ooo...who let the dogs out? Now I am waiting for the kitchen sink...still waiting...waiting...Awe. No kitchen sink. ... You are having way too much fun on your iPad. Oh go ahead, make some music on your iPad :-) Electribe is a great app for making beats... or, if you hit every button you can find, it can make great rhythmic weirdness... pots'n'pans, etc. But I guess you figured that out! I am having fun; I'm glad you found this one interesting. Thanks for listening, Paul.

Bipolar bionic drummer providing the psychedelic backdrop for the trinoid belly dancers from phlebix to gyrate to... this is a sight that cannot be unseen, afterwards, regular belly dancing is ho-hum.

I bought Electribe, but I think it's not my thing. Good to see that it can be put to musical use. Even though it's not really techno, it's probably closer to that than to anythingn else. And techno is just not my thing, to make at least. I enjoyed listening to this.

in between here and there
My feedback, for what it's worth, is the title "Hypnagogia" - that state of being between sleep and waking - is better in its suggestiveness.

Where do you come up with these sounds? I know you already answered that question in your song description, but I'm always amazing at the soundscapes you create with disparate noises. This is just plain fun to listen to, whether waking up or falling asleep.

In the end, it doesn't really matter what genre you shove it into, because much of what you create seems to transcend the limitations of labeling. That is, I don't think you set out to compose a "techno" piece per se, but rather start with some ideas, i.e., sounds, and go from there. By not shoving it into a box, that allows your music to spiral out in multiple directions, often at the same time, and it just makes me want to listen to it over and over again.

Dreaming
Thanks for your detailed thoughts, Warren; I'm glad you enjoyed this and I appreciate your support!

i-Electribe is fun to make interesting noises with, and it's basically a 'drum machine' so naturally all these weird sounds fall exactly on the beat.

A while back, someone here posted in the forums about Paulstretch (it was used to stretch a Juston Bieber song to 800% length). I got that software and used it to make the ethereal background sounds in this tune.

I'm glad you find this fun to listen to... that's what I'm going for :) You are right that I don't go for 'techno' or whatever, so much as start with sounds and tools and make something I like.

Thanks again, Warren!
