Description
So I decided to "go all Little Walter up in this shit (my facebook status while I was writing this song)." There is no guitar here, it's all harmonica and vocals. I have NO idea how successful it was, but it was a ridiculous amount of fun to write and record. It was influenced by great old songs like "Juke," and by newer harp players like Jason Ricci. Again, I tried to forge new ground with the lyrics. Enjoy!

Breath Is Gon
Cool piece! I like the feel of it! Although I would suggest messing with the volume levels a little bit more, for I think the vocals are a little loud balance-wise and the harmonica should come up a bit. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed. I got the same comment about the vocal from a friend of mine, so I actually just did another mix where I lowered them a little bit. I'll wait to see what others say before posting it, though.

Thanks for stopping by!

I think sometimes . . .
we get all hung up about the four part rhythm section and all that. If your walking down that lonesome highway, in the heat of the sun, and there is no ride or relief in sight, you pull out your harp and start to blow. Then the words come from you or the poor sap doggin' next to you. An das de blues! Just having the courage to go and do something like this will stretch you and grow you a thousand times more than the safer path. Go for it!

I've been
feeling that way for a while now. I started out wanting to create a really full, lush sound (I'd still like to), but then I realized that I express myself better when everything is pared down to something resembling dust, or emptiness. I think somebody called it the 'high and lonesome sound' in reference to Roscoe Holcomb. Thanks for the listen and the support!

Nice!
Wish I could play harmonica! Bring the vocals down a bit and maybe pan the harmonica to either side. Also put some mild compression on the vocals to smooth out the levels a bit.

Thanks for the listen
I've taken your advice on two of the three things -- I've compressed the vocals and brought them down. I was thinking about panning the harmonica, but I decided against it because, in theory, it comes from the same place as vocals -- if it were a piano track, on the other hand...

The one thing I might do is pan the riff off to one side.

Thanks for the comments!

Stripped Down Blues
A traditional gem, in many ways the way the genre should be performed, one of my fav old time performers were Sunny Terry and Brownie Mcgee many's the tune they would perform this way...Bravi really enjoyed this...

the harp
is such a passionate and intimate instrument. add free form vocals and you have original instruments. this feels good.

Great!
You're very lucky to have a good bluesy voice! [Wish I did, I play harp a bit] This is very cool, but as others have suggested, you definitely need to play around with the volumes. The harp is too quiet. You could try lowering the vocals and upping the whole thing on the master track. Or doing the panning left/right/centre trick maybe. Just have a fiddle about until you get a fuller sound. Well worth the time, this is very cool, as I've said. Good lyrics too.

thanks!
I've lowered the volume of the vocals and the harmonica definitely comes out more as a result. I tried panning it and didn't like the way the harp started sounding like it was coming from a different place than my voice, so I shied away from going that route. I'm very flattered that you think my voice pulls off the blues. And that you liked my lyrics.

Cheers!

It's a cool idea to do away with guitar and all. Who needs them. This sounds like it has all it needs.

Good gutbucket blues..
Sounds like it could be from a documentary about the history of blues--nice work! I think a little percussion (even a tub thumping) would bring this up even more, but I still liked as is. Thanks again!

yes, it was somewhat backwards-looking, wasn't it? For me, though, backwards can sometimes constitute forwards. I was actually thinking of buying a set of bass strings and fastening one of them to my door to use as a bass. Tub thumping also sounds like a cool idea. Glad you enjoyed!

Harpin'
I dig the harp work here. All I do is make a mess, like Dylan. Good tune. (Naw... keep the vocals where they are; I like the balance the way it's recorded—sometimes my guitar gets way too out front of my vocals.)

glad
you enjoyed! Also, I agree that Dylan couldn't really play harmonica, he kind of inhales in and out rhythmically. Interesting that you think that about the vocals...something to think about...

Thanks!

actually
what i said about dylan isn't strictly true -- he used it very well as a tool, and it accentuated certain very important things about his music.

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
