Who Let You In?

Description
This was written by Pete, our drummer, who usually sings it when we do it at gigs. During a period when Gus was on a few weeks' leave and Chris was winding up some work things, Pete and I decided to do a "studio" version of WLYI, and this is the result.

Pete plays drums and directs the proceedings - Neil plays bass, guitars, keys and does the vocals.

We have a bit of an immigration debate going on in Australia, with most of the focus is on the "boat people" escaping oppression and coming to Australia by boats via Indonesia. The fact that they make up a very small percentage of illegal immigrants here (most simply fly in by plane and overstay their visas), the right wing media have chosen to beat up the story, playing the race card big time.
This song reflects Pete's (and the rest of us') attitude to all that.

Don't forget, you can download the whole CD that this is taken from FOR FREE! at http://pbgb.bandcamp.com/

Hope you like it!

Lyrics
WHO LET YOU IN ?
©2010 Peter Reid

IF YOU’RE NOT FIRST AUSTRALIAN
SOMEONE IN YOUR FAMILY HAS BEEN AN ILLEGAL ALIEN
BUT YOU’RE MIGHTY GLAD THAT SOMEONE LET THEM IN
YEA YOU’RE MIGHTY GLAD THAT SOMEONE LET THEM IN

YOU KNOW IT AIN’T NO MYSTERY,
LOOK UP YOUR FAMILY HISTORY, THEY CAME ACROSS THE SEA
BET YOU’RE MIGHTY GLAD SOMEONE LET THEM IN
YEA YOU’RE MIGHTY GLAD SOMEONE LET THEM IN

NOW WE’RE ALL AUSSIES TOO
ACCEPTED AS TRUE BLUE AY MATE ?
THE GOOD LIFE THROUGH AND THROUGH
FIRST AUSTRALIANS LET US SHARE
OUR ANTHEM SAYS FAIR’S FAIR
‘FOR THOSE WHO’VE COME ACROSS THE SEAS
WE’VE BOUNDLESS PLAINS TO SHARE’

SO FAIR CRACK OF THE WHIP MATE
YOU KNOW THAT “IT’S OUR SHOUT”
SHARE THE THINGS THAT MAKE OUR COUNTRY GREAT
SHOW THE WORLD WHAT BEING AUSSIE'S ALL ABOUT
SHOW THE WORLD WHAT BEING AUSSIE'S ALL ABOUT

SO DO UNTO OTHERS MATE
DON’T TURN THEM BACK, DON’T MAKE THEM WAIT
THAT’S NOT THE WAY WE ARE
DO THE RIGHT THING, COME ON, LET THEM IN
BE TRUE BLUE, COME ON, LET THEM IN

excellent
kickin' and thoughtful

is this 6/8 or 12/4? or a slow 4/4 with triplets?

i'm a first gen immigrant to the U.S. - and i have pondered similar issues...

thanks

Who Let You In ?
Thanks Smokey

This is peter replying.

Glad you like the song.

It is in 6/8.

And yes, we in Australia ( apart from the Indigenous "First Australians" ) are ALL immigrants. What gives us the right to deny others ? Especially those whose countries we have invaded and lives we have ruined.

I enjoyed your Teardrop - I am very fond of the male voice in choral arrangements. Nice job

Peter

immigrants
most of the people in the U.S. are immigrants, or just a few generations from immigrants.

we are mostly the product of the colonialism of years past...

Wow! As I read the description I thought you were talking about us in the US and our debate over Mexicans coming to the States.

Good tune! Great production!

Same the world over my friend

Glad you like the tune. Tried to get a lilting feel, like a smallish boat on the high seas. Neil does great production work for us.

Hi Johannes
Good to see you back around MJ - thought you might have gone on to bigger and better things! Yes, having a band is fun - we rehearse a lot and do the occasional gig. Most of our gigs are for various charitable causes, and sometimes we run our own party nights - have one coming up on 16th October - can get you a ticket if you're in the area :) We sold out over a month ago! We're starting to sound pretty reasonable now - it's taken a while! Our new PA is going to help a lot, plus we have a group of capable players at last. This tune is a long way from how we do it live (we only have 2 guitarists for a start). It has been really good for my confidence vocally and on guitar to have a capable band to play with.
I saw you'd just posted, and was listening when the email notification came in.
Best wishes from Oz,
Neil

Cool
This song sounds great, and I love the message. Here in the US, we blame the Mexicans for all of our problems because... well, I guess xenophobia. Nice work, Pete and Neil.
