Description
I found a salamander under a rock one time when I was a kid...
I often check under rocks if I'm in the woods, but I've never found another one.

Lyrics
on the aspen side, behind the roadside
not one false step. keep descending
past the rock oak hill
when you reach the brook that runs the gorge bottom
where broken slate lies in cold water
then you're almost there

walk faster
if you wanna know….
what there is to find
against a wall of clouds
look over, everywhere that's under the sun
the sun comes out, the shadow reappears

i don't know
how many seasons ago
i found a salamander underneath a rock
flashed red
in the stream bed
for an instant,
never seen again

salamander

the dream dreams itself inside there
might be a chance to look inside there
before you leave

under a rock
Wow ! this is mega mega heavy.
Sort of soundgarden vibe to it...but even heavier than them.
Is that possible??
Really like the tone and interplay on both the left and right guitars and the drums are mixed really well.
mad section changes drag you up and down and sideways and that ending is top notch
Great heavy track
cheers

thanks
I really appreciate your comments, glad I was able to at least partially achieve what I was going for...
I was thinking more "stoner rock" than grunge but both are hugely Sabbath-influenced...
I admire Kim Thayil's guitar playing so the soundgarden comparison makes me happy!

glad the tone sounded alright, thought it might be hard to achieve on a Telecaster but I guess you can do anything with Guitar Rig!

Some really cool and clever changes in here.
Excellent stuff.

structure
Ha ha, there isn't much structure to it apart from semi-random repetition of some of the sections, but that seems to be the case in a lot of the "doom metal" type tunes I drew on for inspiration....
glad you liked it!

Salamander
My childhood home had a small brook running the length of the property. I spent many a summer day pulling up rocks searching for those same slippery creatures.

The detuned (barritone guitars) are simply massive. Downloaded!

salamanders
salamanders are just plain awesome. I like frogs too... maybe there will be a part 2!
as mentioned above, I was a little skeptical I could get a "heavy" sound with a single coil telecaster, but I guess the modelling software mangles up the original signal enough to make it possible...
as far as detuning is concerned, I tuned the guitar down to CGCFGC. as low as I could get it without the strings being completely slack!

Nice grunge tune man. Love when this song kicks into gear big time and about 2:10 or so.

Nice heavy bottom end guits!

Doomcore
Cool track, I dig the slow chugging guitar.
Please don't take offense, but I here some tuning issues.
Is this for effect?
Not sure if the mis-intonation issues with the guitar is on purpose or not, but it is a side effect of de-tuning guitars a whole step or more without reseting the intonation. It actually adds something cool to the sludge tempo grunge atmosphere.
Are you into any bands like Goblin Cock, Mastadon, Crowbar, and
The Sword?
Either way great stuff and I hope to hear more soon!

no offense
no offense taken, I always appreciate constructive feedback.
I'm usually pretty sensitive to tuning issues but I admit I didn't pick up on it this time. It sounded "good enough" to me I guess! I'll have to listen back with a more "attuned" ear...

Mastodon and crowbar are favourites of mine... I've heard good things about the Sword but haven't checked 'em out yet.
the manin conscious inspirations for this one were High on Fire and Opeth.

Glad you let this Salamander out for a peek, we were quite awarded for it's appearance. Really sounds inspiredly spontaneous. Nice guitar sounds. Eh... would be nice if you post your lyrics in the description.

Heavy, unique
but not without certain hooks. Something for everyone in this track. Personally, I think it defies comparisons. Which is really cool.
Relic67 said 3040 days ago (October 24th, 2010)
comparisons
one other influence I forgot to mention was Polvo, they mix a certain pop sensibility with downtuned guitars and slightly off kilter riffs.... one of my favourite bands.
I'm glad you stopped in!

"I found a salamander under a rock one time when I was a kid...
I often check under rocks if I'm in the woods, but I've never found another one." Watch your back man... They're ON to you!!!

But seriously, those guitars are killer! I can't believe the tones your getting. (I'm a little envious.)

Very interesting arrangement. Cool lyrics too.

Nice job Alec!

Be well friend!

tones
the guitar tones were all achieved with American Standard Telecaster plugged into Guitar Rig.
I don't have a proper heavy metal guitar for the heavier bits, but it sounded acceptable to me.
I do like the punchy attack of a telecaster.
thanks for checking out the song Mike!

Like the chord chnages,
rhythm changes and lots more. Would like to hear the vocals a little louder, but that's a pretty minor thing. I was getting fleeting sounds of bands as the song moved on - Nirvana, Foo Fighters yes, but also Kinks, Hendrix, Yes and a few that I just couldn't put a name to. A very enjoyable listen - would be a bugger to play live with all those changes.
Thanks!

Quit Wasting Time
...looking for lizards...

I found a salamander once. I never, ever, ever lifted another rock looking for another one. Think maybe we're separated twins or something.

Huh?

You're a real rocker, Alec. Love the storytelling, the great vocal performance and the original composition. Much like the good citizens of Tokyo, I was NOT expecting the ultra heavy rocking Godzilla stomp through the peaceful city.

If I was ever in a band with you, you'd be more than a banjo player, but you would not be in charge of the animals.

It never
...ceases to amaze me how you can jump genre's so brilliantly. I love the Alice in Chains style guitar work, with stop/starts and the lazy chunky apreggios. Great use of drum space and a lovely languid vocal which takes me right back to '91. Bravo Alec, on another fine composition.

glad you liked! it was a bit of a rush job but it turned out OK I guess.
the drum space thing was kind of inadvertent, must be something with "addictive drums" settings... but it was kind of cool how the drums appeared to be somewhat separated in the stereo field... nothing I did on purpose I assure you!
