Description
on 110610 Bryn had put some files that he made in the shared Dropbox we have. 2 guitar snippets, a bass track, a bitcrushed scratchy rhythm and a drum track. I did a lot of copy and paste and arranged them into what you hear now. I love when Bryn gives you little amazing bits of sound and says "have fun."

I used the pinhole mic and it was kind of noisy, so I decided to go with it and made everything a little saturated and scratchy sounding. I made my own "samples" and tried to think of this as similar to an old hip hop track.

People ask me how I do things, so here is the break down (not that I am any source of good advice):

Bryn's bitcrushed drums - i added a dash of tape delay and rearranged the pattern slightly halfway through the song

main drum kit - i didn't do anything to it other than arrange it

bass - ran it through voxengo tube to warm it up, then EQ'ed, then ran it through TAL filter2 (which is the filter section from theTAL Noisemaker synth). it lets you draw in how you want the filter to work. i automated the resonance a little so it would have a little variation during the track. finally I ran it through Logics dub delay with the delay almost off to give it a warped feeling and a slight delay.

Bryn's Eno piano - i put a hall reverb on a bus with a pitch shifter after set to 12 tones. you can hear the reverb is pretty fizzy sounding with some overtones. my fave new trick (stolen from Eno and Daniel Lanois).

Bryn's guitars are untouched but re-arranged

vocals - i originally recorded the idea with the pinhole mic thinking I would re-record. i got my eye operated on yesterday and it hurts when I sing, so I just tried to clean them up a bit with EQ. there is some compression, EQ, a hall reverb on a bus, and logis tape delay on a bus. the harmonies only have EQ and reverb. their is also a lead vocal track I ran through Buffer Override to glitch it up and a pitch shifter. i edited most of it out but you can hear it right before the first round of whoa-whoa-whoa's.

There is a rhythmic bit that plays along (you can really hear it at the end of the song) that I made from the sound of a loose busted piano string. I put a pitch shifter on it as well (from the Melba pack in the Freebie's thread). The busted string is also audible without any processing in a couple of spots.

I made a wind noise with TAL Noisemaker and the warbly synth sound at the very end is XILS3 (probably my fave synth right now).

There are some other textural sounds that I made with odds and ends I found on my HD (guitar swells that I ran through Izotope Vinyl and a tape delay), windchimes, 8 bit noise.

on the main output I put an EQ and PSP vintage warmer (my big money purchase that I am so in love with).

how good is this? Can't beat starting off with some Bryn ingredients - but you really ran with this. Your production skills have been getting exponentially better. Love the softness of this and the cushy jungle vibe. I'm actually beginning to understand what you're talking about too. Amazing.

could you guys be MORE COOL??? Michael, this is really sensational - so creative - so many interesting sounds cascading into my ears. i can't begin to imagine how you guys do stuff like this, but i sure enjoy your results. if bryn is brian eno, who are you? (his twin, separated at birth?) (well then who is bud?) (nevermind)

pretty simple really: throw a bunch of sounds into Logic and start twisting knobs to see what happens. thanks so much for checking this one out.

always easy to work with the tracks you do; they're just so musical. i think i've always been a little manic about details, but my skills were so bad you couldn't hear them. learned much from working with you, thanks.

thanks
nothing but atmosphere and groove on this one. with a lot of Bryn's conceptual snatches of audio it's more fun to do vague melodies as opposed to full on composition. tried to do the vocals along the lines of a horn line. thanks for checking it out.

Very cool collab. I'm amazed at what you have come up with, considering what you had to work with. Really good sounds that are deep and warm. Cool track Michael, look forward to the remix of my remix. :-)

I have a lot to learn about audio processing ... Impressive work from both Bryne and yourself, and the result is a very pleasant listen too. Very nice work.

Oh yeah!
I dig the low end thumping groove this has.
The mysterious sounding vocals are just right.
The distorted guitar signal is so cool. That tape delay effect is sweet; I'm going to have to experiment with that a bit.

Fantastic!

thanks
the bass is all bryn. i just added a bit to it. the vox are me mumbling (no real words), but I thought they worked with it too. as for the Logic tape delay: I am in love with the thing. I would pay good money just for that plug alone. are you on Logic? I also like the TAL Dub delays and King Dubby for freeware, and Audio Damage stuff for payware. thanks for checking it out.

A cool and dark confection. I like that descending run on the piano. The vocs reinforce the mood of the piece.

Nice one

thanks man. had another kid 6 months ago and have not been able to record much in the way of real instruments; consequently I have been geeking out on re-mixes and reading up on how to get my act together as far as engineering. there are a lot of great resources online (free even). i'll start a thread with the tutorials and such that i use. if you go on my blog there is a link to my youtube account and there are a lot of tutorials I faved. thanks so much for checking this out.

Kind of short but sweet for a "Downtempo" song. I liked the vocal work and everything just sounded pretty good to me.

Almost always on MJ I am thinking: this song could be 1:30 shorter and it would be better. For once, and thank you for this, I am thinking: this song could be 1:30 LONGER and it would be just 1:30 more awesome. Really this is killer, glitchy, dark and sparklingly clean. DL'd and fav'd. Great great great.
