Restless Dreams

Having formed just 5 months ago we had no expectations other than to have some fun jamming together. We really had no idea what talent would be brought to the practices and, indeed, the first few jams were pretty haphazard. But, there was certainly no shortage of original song ideas from everyone. And we hacked away at them just enjoying the camaraderie and the accidental little eargasms that would occur from time to time.

Then, one practice, we played our first song for the night, and at the end, we just stood there in silence. We were all looking at each other almost with disbelief… “What just happened here? That sounded pretty good!” That same night we went on to play more of our repertoire with the same stunned look on our faces after each song. Suddenly, our musical talents were meshing, the songs sounded tight, and the band had risen to a new plane of existence. For the first time, we found ourselves excited about sharing our music with people outside the living room of Bob’s house. Our direction had now changed.

Here, then, is an example of one of the many song ideas that seem to be coming fast and furious every night we get together. This is a song written and performed by Bob Johnson. It is a very intimate and emotional song about working through inner struggles and personal crises.

What is really cool about this song is that if you would have said to Bob 6 months ago, “You will be in a band singing and playing songs you wrote…” he’d have probably peed himself laughing. It is a most remarkable transition he has made_ from sitting in a corner, shyly and quietly plinking on his guitar those first few meetings, to the man who now stands in front of a mic and sings and plays like Mark Knoffler!

Also playing on this song: Dennis Perry on bass guitar and vocals, Ed Saraka on lead guitar and vocals, and Dale Kostyk, on drums, recording, mixing, and production.

This was recorded with Logic Pro 8 on a MacBook Pro. All instrumentation was direct into a Motu 828MKII, including the drums which were performed live on an electronic drum kit through Superior Drummer 2. The vocals were recorded in a closet on a Shure KSM44.

Hope you enjoy!

I'm assuming the rest of the guys weren't in the closet so I can say that the vocals fit nicely in the mix, the rest of which is very tastily played and mixed. An all around good job. It reminds me of early rock, maybe ballad-rock ;-)

This is indeed Knopfleresque. I dig the laid back vocals.Nice solid band sound. Cool guitar breaks. Wishing for a little fatter Strat sound. Nice
bass solo. Oohs on ride-out are a nice touch. Look forward to more from this group.

The understated vocals sit nestles nicely amongst the guitars and percussion. This reminds me in style of Poco and that whole Messina, Hillman era. It was a tasty mix and very enjoyable. Thanks.

Well done!
Love it! I'd say the group has jelled well. Really nice song and nice mix. Sounds better than most I hear sitting in a studio control room. Shake Dale's hand for me. Now pardon me while I download this and put it on the big speakers!
