Lyrics
ONE NIGHT AT THE WASTELAND BAR
© 2004 by Roger Dodge

She said she was fooling around and broke his heart.
There’s been an emptiness inside ever since they’ve been apart.
Forgot trust is one of the keys, now she’s locked out behind it.
Asked me if she got down on her knees, do I think she could beg him to find it?
Looking over her shoulder in the wasteland,
He’ll never hold her at the wasteland.

He drifts into the bar asking for a double,
And as he liquifies his mind to insulate the trouble,
He says he gambled with the devil and lost his soul.
He’ll never risk his heart again, just stay in control;
No reconstructing in the wasteland,
Just self destructing at the wasteland.

As he drowns himself in drink, he cracks a crooked smile;
“It’s a good night don’t you think? I haven’t been out in awhile.
You can’t win if you don’t play, can’t play if you don’t try.
I’d rather drink here on these stools in a bar full of fools,
Than to waste one more minute to cry”.

Spins around in his seat - checks out a girl alone at a table.
She looks great from behind, he’ll try to take her home if he’s able.
Combs his hair and tucks his shirt, walks over ready to go,
But when he looks into her eyes his face says oh man no - no!
It’s his reckless lover in the wasteland.
And she’s blown his cover at the wasteland.

He says “I’m sorry but I thought you were someone I didn’t know”.
As he turns to walk away, she asks him not to go;
“There maybe nothing I can say to restore your trust in me.
I can’t shake guilt and regret but maybe I can make you see
I need to be forgiven for the wasteland.
I’m so tired of livin’ in this wasteland”.

He takes her hand without a word, they disappear in the night;
Now I can tell you that I heard things turned out alright.
Though it’s bright and hot, there’s a big blind spot when we wish on a shooting star,
And it looked really good to see someone understood,
One night at the wasteland bar.

One Night at the Wasteland Bar
Good story song. I like the hook. The mix seems a little hot to me. Feels like the vocals and guitar are fighting for the same eq space.

EQ space
Thanks for the constructive criticism. Acoustic vs vocal? I'll check phase, stereo image positioning, and play with the EQ between the two. While I'm at it, I always thought the bass could be backed off.

One Night
Hi Roger - well even if it's a bit "hot" in spots, as dave said, it's a great story song, very well presented and compelling playing. so glad you're at MJ!!

bass
bass backed off; I don't think the bass level is to high at all, but I do think the whole mix is in very proximate EQ. I don't know how to tell you to fix it, but there's a feeling there's no distinct mid-level or bottom end in this.

Good song though, Rog. Kinda long....

Long story
It was more important to get the story in than to adhere to a commercial length. My hard drive is full of other projects right now, but as soon as I finish some, I'll be tweeking the mix. I haven't released anything, yet.
