The Grail

Description
This song, i suppose, came out of a reaction to the recent trend, (or the popular revival of a very old trend!) of interest in the alchemic and occult mysteries, the seductive glamour of which were so effectively rendered by Dan Brown and since then by many others. The idea of 'The Grail' as an object to be physically searched for seemed more of a metaphor of earthly power to me than Divine Revelation, protected by secret codes and arcane writings, ancient hints and ingenious booby traps, when all the while the only vessel that really might have the ability to suffer the nature of the Divine and contain a tiny portion of it i very humbly suggest, is of course the mysterious soul that we all carry with us.
The modern day grail quest seemed therefore an ironic, and self-contradictory business, like the mountain rescue team who are helped in their search by the very man they are actually supposed to be looking for! (This has actually happened, by the way!)

Listening to the song now, it seems a little overlong, and worse than that, rather preachy. i suppose that there was some annoyance in the composition, too, a reaction to the way the purveyors of these supposed custodians of hidden truths lord it over the ignorant like me, and have us believe that life's central themes are to be found and appreciated only by the select few, more intelligent than the rest. Baloney!

Humbly

Marc

Lyrics
The Grail

I am the Grail,
The vessel of legend and tale,
That Arthur sought, with all his noble train,
The true cup that can never fail,
I am the Grail.
But what’s in a cup,
Be it leather or pewter or gold?
Be it new or a thousand years old?
Or my aching soul,

We are the Grail,
Feel how the emptiness assails,
The secret pain, that nothing can relieve,
Except the love that finally prevails,
We are the Grail.
And nothing we see,
Be it mountain or seashore or town,
Be it medal or mitre or crown,
Is an answer found,

We are the Grail,
And fill it with the world to no avail,
Where sun and stars, and moonlight cannot shine,
Where every light save one is doomed to fail,
Within the Grail.
And though we might know,
The secrets of Isis and Sphinx,
And know what the desert wind thinks,
As the red land drinks,

We remain the Grail,
Never for barter or sale,
We come this way, and just the same depart,
Deny the cup and to the fates bewail,
We remain the Grail.
Though many things,
Can lead us to lie and confuse,
When passion so naturally rules,
Yet never fools,

For we are the Grail,
Never to seek to no avail,
The only light that satisfies the heart,
That in everyone shall eventually prevail,
And fill the Grail.

Not overlong.
I can make time to be taken back in time to a place where the days were filled wonder and awe. Thanks.

The Grail!!
Da Vinci Code it is but not the film!! Definately the book! I like the simple progressions and the niceness of the tune creates the atmosphere very well. Only critique is not that it is overlong but that it requires a middle section with a lead guitar part for me. But well played and really good lyrics!

Missing part
Good that it didn't drag. i never really thought about a midsection, though it might well be improved that way. It is rather the same tone throughout. It was done in my pre-Mac days. With the power of GB i probably would have dabbled with a few changes.

Glad that you enjoyed it.

Balonious
Glad you find the sentiment appealing! Don't want to drag scripture in at this point but there's something about 'i have revealed it to the simple, and hidden it from the wise'.

Pays to be a bit dim, thankfully!

Glad it went down well.

Vocal suport
Really encouraged by the good reviews of the vocals. i always thought they were even worse than my guitar playing, but you do a lot for my confidence in front of a microphone!

Thank you for downloading it, though it might bring a fanatical group of quasi-religious treasure hunters to your door in wrathful indignation if it gets out!

Cheers

Hi Richard!
Thank you for the great comment. Glad you found it interesting and pleasant to the ear. Thanks for mentioning the vocals, especially. No talent suspected there at all, but perhaps the sincerity comes through in places.

Cheers

Thoroughly
enjoyed listening to those eloquent lyrics via your very soothing voice.... you sing in a very 'measured' but natural style and the guitar is beautifully played yet subtle. I just loved this, regards M

Glad you liked the sound. No Garageband involved, just guitar and voice through a little mixer with an internal mic. Thanks for leaving a nice review!
