Description
North of the Humber, Song 5 of 10

It all seemed part of the experience after a being out on the water all day to try the Fish and Chips from one of the number of outlets in Seahouses, Northumbria, and sit by some benches facing over the harbour and out to sea to eat them with everyone else. It was the best 'Fish Supper' as we call it, that i have ever had; so good, indeed, that i thought it was worth a song!

Hope it doesn't make you too hungry!

Lyrics
Fish Supper

Oh, sit with a view of the harbour,
And watch the boats come in,
Where benches line the steepness,
At Seahouses main street’s end,
And have your tea,
With the wind and the sea,
And don’t have a care for the chill,
Just eat off the box,
From the old fish shop,
Hot and fresh on the hill.

Cos you’ll go very far from here, bonny lad,
To reach another strand,
That makes a supper quite the same,
As the Coast of Northumberland.

Oh, sit with the rest, if you care to,
As the evening light goes down,
With the cries of the gulls all around you,
As they fight for any scraps on the ground,
But keep your eye,
On the birds wheeling by,
And don’t let ‘em get to your chips,
Just eat them down,
And the end of the town,
And point out the distant ships.

Cos you’ll go very far from here, bonny lad....

And as for the tosh they’ll tell you,
Bout what a good meal needs,
That vege and fruit are vital,
To give you a balanced feed,
Just smile and nod
And thank your God,
That you’ve come to a sensible shore,
Where things that last,
Are drawn from the past,
And we’re still coming back for more!

Cos you’ll go very far from here, bonny lad...

I can Tatste the fish&chips and smell the ocean!
Great song. I like the Trumpet synth.

Those damn Gulls! Always going for the scraps!! But I guess they are part of the Ocean life experience!

Thanks for sharing I enjoyed it.

Glad it went down all right!
Thought i'd include a little brass section because the locals have a soft spot for the old bandstand stuff, and that stalwart, harmonious sound is somehow a flavour of their obdurate, friendly, cheerful character.

Thanks for listening!

so this is definitely music you can just relax to. that's what's always missing in this fast world, unfortunately.
the sound is so amazing 'cause the instruments sound a lot like those normally used in austrian folk music.
i like the idea behind the song - and this would perfectly fit to a fish restaurant commercial haha
the singing is great...but what microphone did you use for the vocals? it sounds a bit dull and cheap if you know what i mean. maybe you just used the internal mic i really don't know. you should definitely re-record this amazing song to enhance it all the way through!
love the seaman-like chorus at 2:30

AND YOU MADE ME HUNGRY! :)

Interesting
Never made the Austrian connection! Interesting!

The mic was the internal one in my BOSS mixer, which is usually quite good, but i have been putting the sound through some noise reduction software so maybe what you gain in clarity you lose in expressiveness?

i am glad that it got the juices flowing!

Cheers now

Wonderful expressive song. Sweet, gentle melody married to such descriptive lyrics as to take me there with you.

Thank You!
Glad that it took you to the place like that! The idea of a descriptive song, i suppose. It was a challenge trying to make a song around a meal, but it was a good feed, washed down with a bit a McEwan's Scottish Ale (which i should have put in the song, i suppose!)

Cheers now

Fishy Connections
Hi Yves! Had a quick look at the place you mention on Google. Looks lovely. I drove round the Ring Of Kerry with friend a few years ago, which was bumpy, but beautiful! Remember hearing angelic voices at Waterville; took us a while to realise it was the service in the local church being relayed to the main street via speakers!

Cheers for the listen

Hi Reggie
Glad that you are finding my Northumbrian songs enjoyable. Halfway through now!

It makes such a difference when you have an appreciative audience, however small, doesn't it?

Great site from that point of view. MacJammers seem to be able to take something from every genre.

Thanks for listening!

mmmmm
i swear i smelled salt in the first measure!
the horns were a nice touch. so were the stately strings.
good mix of instrumental voices - i especially liked the guitars working together. i think you could improve this by evening out the vocal volume levels throughout the song. your delivery is really smooth - i got the feeling you were totally into it. WONDERFULLY sung last word!! thank you - anne

Hi Anne
Thanks for the comment, especially the advice about improving it. i'll make a note and see what i can do.

Glad you enjoyed it. The last few measures are a little strange in that they change key twice, with the last word emerging from F into G, the home key. i thought for a long time that it wouldn't work, but it does give it something i think, and i'm glad that you agree on that!

Thank you so much for listening,

Cheers now

Fish and Chips
English F&C is really good, especially when they use newspapers to wrap the stuff. Over here in Vancouver we also have pretty good F&C.

Your song would have mede me hungry, but then I just made and finished off my dinner of cuttle fish and morning glory (kangkong).

Very sweet song...I love songs like this one!

Newspapers?
That is going back a bit, sir! i can remember them being wrapped that way as a child, but its way back. Now its all sorts of things, even plastic containers. At Seahouses, they use a cardboard box a bit like a pizza box only smaller and deeper, hence 'eat from the box'.

Hope the dinner didn't disagree with you!

Glad you liked the song,

Cheers now

Relaxed folk tune
Hi Marc. You are turning them out pretty quickly at the moment. All those "fish suppers" must be good for you. Nice, relaxed folk tune that is finely embellished by the brass accompaniment. Your guitar work also supports the song very nicely. Well done. Regards, Peter.

Hi Peter!
Glad you are staying with the program ;-)

Actually, these ten songs have taken all year, and it is only now that they are ready (more or less!) that i am chucking them out every Saturday (or thereabouts) for the appraisal of MacJammers.

Glad this one hasn't dipped below the standard!

Cheers for listening and thanks for Your support.

Take care

Hi Victor!
Glad you liked it. The old brass band music is still very popular in that neck of the woods, so i thought i would include the sound in the song.

I'm noticing a certain "coziness" about your music Marc. Not a 'lame' cozy, but an 'atmospheric' cozy. There's always an evoking mood. Don't really know how to describe it.
