Minima No. 1

This fall I began listening to works by Steve Reich, an American composer who's specialized and (I think I'm safe to say) revolutionized minimalism in music. I immediately became addicted to his music, and - of course - started fooling around with adding some minimalistic aspects to some of my own work. For instance, my graduation project is a four part minimalistic work (albeit with some remnants of lyrical romanticism) for 2 pianos, string quartet, clarinet and flute (It'll be premiered in Reykjavik on April 15th, if any of you are in the vicinity :P ).

This piece, which I so imaginitively called Minima No. 1 (it had the working title "The Second Reich" - clever, huh?), is for a slightly bigger ensemble (Piano, 3 marimbas, string quartet, two flutes, two clarinets and two french horns) and was one of my first attempts at "Reich-like" pieces (I began working on it in September, I think...).

I can't say that the piece is totally finished - still not perfectly happy with it - but I wanted to give you at least a taste of it.

you have TOTALLY nailed Steve Reich's style here Einar. i'm also a huge fan of his and know his work well, you NAILED it! the marimbas bring it home in the Reichian way for sure. also, you've got his complex beats all playing gorgeously together here - GREAT JOB!!!

Love it
From beginning to the end. I would like to hear the piano/marimba theme to come back at the ending after the heavy strings, and play around with the settings on the violas and cello.
Details though - this is so much fun to listen to - the energy is great.
I'm really impressed by the clarity and confidence in your composition and arrangement; having a great time being impressed every time I listen to a new track of yours!

Love this piece
and the minimalist influences. I'm a big fan of repeating patterns that move in and out, while new parts come in and take center stage while the old parts become fabric, part of the background. Very cool change around the 2:15 mark.

Minimalist, but not boring. Lots happening here to keep the listener's ear engaged unraveling the layers. Fun.

Aw, MAN!...
This is very, very, very cool, Einar... This is one of the sorts of things that I sort could be done and made to sound really good when I first got introduced to computer based music....

I would love to hear this performed live in a hall with great acoustics and the instruments scattered around the audience and even in the balcony, so that the sonic elements seem to come from everywhere...

I really love how this sounds...

It is
so much fun. It brings to mind anthropomorphic instruments dancing around a room as some come to the forefront while others pull back. Merlin's Music Room. What a spell you weave. Thanks.
